Finite element analysis of dynamic changes in spinal mechanics of osteoporotic lumbar fracture.

AIM: This study aims to explore the effects of finite element biomechanical properties of different methods in the treatment of osteoporotic thoracolumbar fractures. METHODS: Based on the ultra-thin computed tomography scan data of a volunteer's thoracolumbar spine, the finite element method was used to simulate the treatment of osteoporotic thoracolumbar fracture. Spiral computed tomography scanning was used to obtain images of the thoracolumbar region, which was then imported into Mimics software to obtain the three-dimensional geometric model. The finite element model of normal T11 - L2 se

Biomechanics of subtrochanteric fracture fixation using short cephalomedullary nails: A finite element analysis.

A finite element analysis was performed to evaluate the stresses around nails and cortical bones in subtrochanteric (ST) fracture models fixed using short cephalomedullary nails (CMNs). A total 96 finite element models (FEMs) were simulated on a transverse ST fracture at eight levels with three different fracture gaps and two different distal locking screw configurations in both normal and osteoporotic bone. All FEMs were fixed using CMNs 200 mm in length. Two distal locking screws showed a wider safe range than 1 distal screw in both normal and osteoporotic bone at fracture gaps ≤ 3 mm. In no

Different fixation pattern for thoracolumbar fracture of ankylosing spondylitis: A finite element analysis.

The objective of this study is to establish an ankylosing spondylitis (AS) thoracolumbar fracture finite element (FE) model and provide a proper posterior fixation choice from the biomechanical perspective. The ankylosing spondylitis T9-L5 FE model was built and the range of motion (ROM) was compared to previous studies. The L1 transverse fracture was simulated and was separately fixed by five different patterns. The pull force and yielding force of the screws, the von Mises stress of the internal fixation, and the displacement of fracture site were analyzed to evaluate the proper fixation pat

Effects of different types of maxillary protraction on maxilla with finite element analysis.

Although it is well documented in animal research that an early exposure to general anesthetics during critical stages of synaptogenesis disturbs normal brain development ultimately leading to cognitive and affective impairments, it is less clear whether and how surgical interventions and/or underlying systemic inflammation impact the detrimental effects of general anesthetics. Some emerging evidence suggests that aseptic systemic inflammation preceding exposure to the commonly used general anesthetics worsens anesthesia-induced neuroapoptosis and activates inflammasome pathways while resultin

The biomechanical characteristics of a feline distal forelimb: A finite element analysis study.

As a typical digitigrade mammal, the uniquely designed small distal limbs of the feline support two to three times of its body weight during daily movements. To understand how force transmission occurs in relation to the distal joint in a feline limb, which transfers bodyweight to the ground, it is necessary to examine the internal stress distribution of the distal joint limb in detail. Therefore, finite element models (FEM) of a healthy feline were established to predict the internal stress distribution of the distal limb. The FEM model included 23 bony components, various cartilaginous ligam

Finite-Element Analysis of Stress on the Proximal Tibia After Unicompartmental Knee Arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Because the indications for unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) are limited, few patients have undergone the procedure. Therefore, it is difficult to decide the acceptable range of variation in the details of UKA on the basis of the available clinical data. The objective of this study was to identify factors that affect the distribution of stress on the proximal tibia after UKA. METHODS: Two-dimensional finite-element analysis of the proximal tibia was used to assess four factors: 1) two types of implants-all ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and metal-backed

Biomechanical analysis for total mesialization of the mandibular dentition: A finite element study.

OBJECTIVES: To clarify the mechanics of tooth movement in mesialization of the whole mandibular dentition when changing the force angulation. SETTING: A finite element method was used to simulate long-term movements of the whole mandibular dentition. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Tooth movement was simulated by accumulating the initial displacement, which was produced by elastic deformation of the periodontal ligament. Mesial forces of 3 N were applied to the second molar bracket at -30°, -15°, 0°, 15° and 30° to the occlusal plane. RESULTS: The whole dentition and occlusal plane were rotated depen

Fracture Prediction by Computed Tomography and Finite Element Analysis: Current and Future Perspectives.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review critiques the ability of CT-based methods to predict incident hip and vertebral fractures. RECENT FINDINGS: CT-based techniques with concurrent calibration all show strong associations with incident hip and vertebral fracture, predicting hip and vertebral fractures as well as, and sometimes better than, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry areal biomass density (DXA aBMD). There is growing evidence for use of routine CT scans for bone health assessment. CT-based techniques provide a robust approach for osteoporosis diagnosis and fracture prediction. It remains to be

Orthodontic intrusion of periodontally-compromised maxillary incisors: 3-dimensional finite element method analysis.

BACKGROUND: Loading of the compromised periodontium with orthodontic forces produces different results than those achieved in patients with healthy periodontal support. Determining the force value at a level preventing further deterioration of the patient's periodontal status, thus delivering the most precisely individualized "dose" of loading, seems to be crucial for the successful intrusion of teeth with reduced periodontal support. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to determine the range of force values efficiently intruding maxillary incisors without further compromising the initially-

Finite element analysis of the amputated lower limb: A systematic review and recommendations.

The care and rehabilitation of individuals after lower limb amputation presents a substantial and growing socioeconomic challenge. Clinical outcome is closely linked to successful functional rehabilitation with a prosthetic limb, which depends upon comfortable prosthetic limb - residual limb load transfer. Despite early interest in the 1980s, the amputated limb has received considerably less attention in computational biomechanical analysis than other subjects, such as arthroplasty. This systematic literature review investigates the state of the art in residual limb finite element analysis pub

A new multipartite plate system for anterior cervical spine surgery; finite element analysis.

BACKGROUND: There are numerous available plates, almost all of which are compact one-piece plates. During the placement of relatively long plates in the treatment of multi-level cervical pathologies, instrument related complications might appear. In order to overcome this potential problem, a novel 'articulated plate system' is designed. We aimed to delineate finite element analysis and mechanical evaluations. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A new plate system consisting of multi partite structure for anterior cervical stabilization was designed. Segmental plates were designed for application onto the

Femoral head necrosis: A finite element analysis of common and novel surgical techniques.

BACKGROUND: Femoral head necrosis is a common cause of secondary osteoarthritis. At the early stages, treatment strategies are normally based on core decompression techniques, where the number, location and diameter of the drilling holes varies depending on the selected approach. The purpose of this study was to investigate the risk of femoral head, neck and subtrochanteric fracture following six different core decompression techniques. MATERIALS: Five common and a newly proposed techniques were analyzed in respect to their biomechanical consequences using finite element analysis. The geometr

Failure location prediction by finite element analysis for an additive manufactured mandible implant.

In order to reconstruct a patient with a bone defect in the mandible, a porous scaffold attached to a plate, both in a titanium alloy, was designed and manufactured using additive manufacturing. Regrettably, the implant fractured in vivo several months after surgery. The aim of this study was to investigate the failure of the implant and show a way of predicting the mechanical properties of the implant before surgery. All computed tomography data of the patient were preprocessed to remove metallic artefacts with metal deletion technique before mandible geometry reconstruction. The three-dimens

Biomechanical analysis of the annular ligament in Monteggia fractures using finite element models.

BACKGROUND: The pathogenesis of Monteggia injuries remains controversial. The current study biomechanically explored the pathological changes during Monteggia fractures using finite element analysis. METHODS: Two cadaveric forearm specimens underwent computed tomography in both the prone and supine positions. The images were imported to Mimics to construct three-dimensional images. The obtained models of the annular ligaments were assembled onto the bones. Two thin gaps were produced at the proximal third of the ulna to simulate a Monteggia fracture. The models were analyzed mechanically. The

Modeling study of aortic root for ross procedure: a structural finite element analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIM OF THE STUDY: The Ross procedure involves replacing the diseased aortic valve with the patient's own pulmonary valve (autograft) to form the neoaortic valve, reimplanting the coronary arteries, and inserting a cadaveric homograft into the pulmonary position. METHODS: In order to model a neoaortic root for the Ross procedure in patients with aortic valve disease, the three-dimensional geometry of a reference aortic valve was reconstructed (reference model A). The diameters of the sinotubular junction (STJ) and maximum sinus were then modified to create four geometric models

Explicit nonlinear finite element geometric analysis of parabolic leaf springs under various loads.

This study describes the effects of bounce, brake, and roll behavior of a bus toward its leaf spring suspension systems. Parabolic leaf springs are designed based on vertical deflection and stress; however, loads are practically derived from various modes especially under harsh road drives or emergency braking. Parabolic leaf springs must sustain these loads without failing to ensure bus and passenger safety. In this study, the explicit nonlinear dynamic finite element (FE) method is implemented because of the complexity of experimental testing A series of load cases; namely, vertical push, wi
