Subcutaneous chromoblastomycosis is an infection commonly seen in tropical and subtropical climates, usually caused by trauma with vegetables and often affects the host's lower limbs. We report a case of auricular chromoblastomycosis in a 67-year-old man and discuss the rarity of this clinical manifestation of chromoblastomycosis in the medical literature. In the present case, the etiologic agent was Fonsecaea pedrosoi, the most common agent found in Brazil.

A 66-year-old woman who lived on Tokunoshima Island, a small and remote southern island of the Japanese archipelago, had suffered from chromomycosis for more than 30 years and presented with a tumor-like growth on the posterior crural region of his right leg. Fonsecaea pedrosoi was identified as the pathogen from its growth pattern and micromorphological characteristics. The patient was successfully treated with 5-fluorocytosine, itoraconazole, and topical thermotherapy.

Chromoblastomycosis is an important subcutaneous mycotic infection that is endemic worldwide but more common in the tropics. It is caused by the traumatic inoculation of the skin with pigmented saprophytic moulds, and the principal infective species are Fonsecaea pedrosoi and Cladophialophora carrionii. Although chromoblastomycosis is not known to be fatal, it is characteristically chronic, and can be complicated by lymphatic damage and neoplastic transformation. It is one of the more difficult-to-treat mycoses, and a variety of antifungal regimens often combined with various physical treatmen

Chromoblastomycosis is a chronic cutaneous and subcutaneous mycosis, is caused by dematiaceous fungi, the most frequently implicated are Fonsecaea, Phialophora, Cladophialophora, Rhinocladiella and Exophiala. We report a woman who was treated before with mycological cure, but she experience a relapse requiring treatment again. Direct microscopic examination and skin biopsy with culture were necessary to identify a Exophiala psychrophila, and for our knowledge this is the first case reported.

The exact pathogenesis of chromoblastomycosis is unknown. Direct percutaneous inoculation, inhalation, and hematogenous dissemination have been implicated. We report a case of chromoblastomycosis that followed a well-defined episode of penetrating trauma. The causative organism, Fonsecaea pedrosi, was cultured from the patient's lesion and from the tree branch responsible for the trauma. This "natural" experiment supports the contention that one cause of chromoblastomycosis is traumatic cutaneous implantation of the fungus.

Chromoblastomycosis (CBM) and mycetoma, as implantation mycoses, have been listed as neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) by the World Health Organization. The concurrent occurrence of these two NTDs in a single patient is extremely rare. A 69-year-old female patient presented with papules on the dorsum of her left hand for over 5 months and nodules on the left lower limb accompanied by ulceration and pain for 20 days. Histopathological examination of the papule on the dorsum of the left hand revealed muriform cells and fungal culture of the tissue identified Fonsecaea monophora. Microscopic exa

A 8-year-old boy presented with scaly plaques of both soles and left palm of 4 year duration. The plaques were well defined scaly, fissured and hyperkeratotic resembling palmo-plantar psoriasis. KOH preparation of the scrapings revealed round, brown, thickwalled bodies with planate division. Grey black, velvety folded colonies were seen in culutre on Sabouraud's dextrose agar. Lacto phenol cotton blue preparation revealed Fonsecaea pedrosoi as the cause of chromoblastomycosis.

The combined effects of terbinafine with itraconazole and amphotericin B against Cladophialophora carrionii, Phialophora verrucosa and Fonsecaea pedrosoi were evaluated in vitro by the checker-board method and expressed as a fractional inhibitory concentration (FIC) index. Synergy was observed with the combination of terbinafine and itraconazole against one isolate of C. carrionii and no antagonism was observed. When amphotericin B was combined with terbinafine or itraconazole, no synergy or antagonism was noted with all isolates included in this investigation.

Chromoblastomycosis (CBM), a chronic subcutaneous infection caused by black fungi such as Fonsecaea monophora (F. monophora), is characterized by a low cure rate, high recurrence rate, and prolonged treatment duration. Neutrophils, one of the most important innate immune cells, play complex roles in the prevention of fungal infections. This study investigated the function of neutrophils in host defense against F. monophora using a neutrophil-depleted mouse model and in vitro co-culture conditions. Fungal burden, histopathological changes, and cytokine profiles were compared between neutrophil-

Phaeohyphomycosis is a chronic infectious condition caused by dematiaceous fungi which usually involve the skin and subcutaneous tissue. Subcutaneous phaeohyphomycosis is characterised by papulonodules, verrucous, hyperkeratotic or ulcerated plaques, cysts, abscesses, pyogranuloma, non-healing ulcers or sinuses. In India, commonly associated genera are Exophiala, Phialophora, Cladosporium, Curvularia, Fonsecaea and Alternaria. This condition involves the presence of brown-walled hyphal structures in the dermis and epidermis. Here, we are reporting a rare case series of three patients of phaeoh

A 38-year-old male with history of trauma in the left gluteal region 20 years ago presented with a dark red skin eruption at the traumatized area. It gradually grew to form an erythematous plaque with a well-defined border. Clinical findings and mycological cultures resulted in the diagnosis of chromoblastomycosis due to Fonsecaea pedrosoi. After initial administration of 5-fluorocytosine and local heat an almost complete cure was achieved with terbinafine combined with local heat therapy. A review is given on the chromoblastomycosis cases observed in the Kitasato region in Japan.

Confirmed cases of chromoblastomycosis in Madagascar from 1955 through 1994 were studied retrospectively. The total number of cases reported was 1,343, of which 98.5% were confirmed by histopathology. Only 30.8% of the cases showed a positive cultivation on mycologic media, and Fonsecaea pedrosoi was identified from 61.8% of the fungal strains. Two distinct areas of endemic chromoblastomycosis, each with a characteristic ecosystem and a single species, are identified. Madagascar represents the most important focus of this fungal disease described to date in the world.

We report two cases of chromomycosis due to Fonsecaea pedrosoi and Cladosporium herbarum, observed in two women from the Tlemcen region. Due to the wart-like or nodular lesions, these case were mistaken for other skin diseases with similar manifestations, particularly verrucous tuberculosis and cutaneous leishmaniasis. The histology revealed fumagoid bodies leading to the identification of the causative agents. Chromomycosis is rare in Algeria although 3 cases have been observed in our area since 1989. The physician should be aware of this diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Dematiaceous fungal infections are frequently encountered in clinical practice with no unified treatment. Drug combination reduces drug resistance, and repurposed clinical drugs as synergists show promise in aiding azoles against phaeohyphomycosis.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the synergistic antifungal effects of docetaxel (DTX) in combination with azoles against dematiaceous fungi and Aspergillus niger, as well as their impact on efflux pump activity.
METHODS: CLSI M38-A2 microbroth dilution method was used to detect fractional inhibitory concentration index of DTX with posaconazo

Chromoblastomycosis is a neglected disease characterized by cutaneous, subcutaneous or disseminated lesions. It is considered an occupational infectious disease that affects mostly rural workers exposed to contaminated soil and vegetal matter. Lesions mostly arise after a traumatic inoculation of herpotrichiellaceous fungi from the Chaetothyriales order. However, the environmental niche of the agents of the disease remains obscure. Its association with insects has been predicted in a few studies. Therefore, the present work aimed to analyze if social insects, specifically ants, bees, and termi

Chromoblastomycosis is a chronic fungal infection of the skin and subcutaneous tissue caused by dematiaceous fungi. We report a case of chromoblastomycosis caused by Fonsecaea pedrosoi from a subtropical region of India that developed over the left foot of a 45-year-old male farmer and was provisionally diagnosed as squamous cell carcinoma. The patient presented with irregular warty growths over the left foot, which had started one year previously, and has gradually progressed over a year to involve the lateral aspect of left leg. The diagnosis of chromoblastomycosis was confirmed by histopath

The gelatinase, urease, lipase, phospholipase and DNase activities of 11 chromoblastomycosis agents constituted by strains of Fonsecaea pedrosoi, F. compacta, Phialophora verrucosa, Cladosporium carrionii, Cladophialophora bantiana and Exophiala jeanselmei were analyzed and compared. All strains presented urease, gelatinase and lipase activity. Phospholipase activity was detected only on five of six strains of F. pedrosoi. DNase activity was not detected on the strains studied. Our results indicate that only phospholipase production, induced by egg yolk substrate, was useful for the differenti
