Impact of Swallowing Assessment Using the Hyodo-Komagane Score on the Severity of Dysphagia and Medical Staff Workload.

BACKGROUND: The goal of dysphagia treatment is to ensure a safe and effective reduction in both dysphagia severity and medical staff workload. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the correlation of the Hyodo-Komagane score with dysphagia severity and medical staff workload. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 96 patients who were referred from other departments for swallowing evaluation from January to April 2021. The correlation between the Hyodo-Komagane score and dysphagia severity was assessed using the Food Intake LEVEL Scale (FILS) score, and its effect on the reduction in medical

[The demand for innovative services by senior citizens of Saint-Petersburg: periods of pandemic and post-pandemic. Part 2.].

In the article, the authors continue their research into the sector of services for the elderly sector as a segment of the silver economy market. The authors compared two waves of surveys on the demand among elderly citizens of St. Petersburg for innovative services, which were conducted during and after the pandemic. The findings show that basic human needs remain the primary needs at all times (in this case, the delivery of food, essential goods, medicines, etc., as well as assistance in everyday life). In the post-pandemic period, the need to teach older people information technology skills

Comparison of In-Person and Virtual Implementations of an Obesity Prevention Culinary Nutrition Education Program for Family Care Providers.

Start Strong, a 4-week culinary nutrition education, obesity prevention program designed for rural family care providers in low-income areas of Minnesota, was initially an in-person training and recently adapted into a virtual version. Using a quasi-experimental design, this study examined within group and between group (in-person versus virtual) changes in culinary skill confidence and familiarity with food assistance programs after Start Strong participation. Additionally, we examined post-program participant experiences.. The in-person program (n=12, mean age 45 years, September 2019) took

Food supplementation programs and breastfeeding practices.

There has been insufficient evaluation of food supplementation programs and their effect on breastfeeding. On the one hand, they reach millions of childbearing women, often in rural areas with little or no other services, and act as a magnet for other health interventions to take place. On the other hand, the risks of substituting food assistance for breast milk and overburdening health personnel with feeding responsibilities, contradict breastfeeding promotion efforts. There is some evidence that focusing on pregnant women rather than infants will reduce these problems and will result in fewe

"Nothing is going to change three months from now": A mixed methods characterization of food bank use in Greater Vancouver.

North American food bank use has risen dramatically since the 1980s, and over 850,000 Canadians were estimated to have visited a food bank monthly in 2015. Food banks serve multiple roles in communities, ranging from 'emergency responses' to individualized and short-term experiences of hunger, to 'chronic' supports as part of long-term subsistence strategies. This study used a mixed-methods design to examine the spectrum of food bank user experiences in a large urban context, as part of a community-based project aiming to envision a redesign of the food bank to contribute to broader community

National associations between pandemic electronic benefit transfer (P-EBT) implementation practices and state characteristics.

BACKGROUND: The Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) program replaced free and reduced-price school meals for low-income children during school closures and summers from 2020 to 2023. Evidence indicates that P-EBT disbursements were associated with a 40% reduction in food hardship and better maternal mental health among low-income households with children. As states had discretion in implementing the program, approaches varied across states. This study characterized patterns of P-EBT implementation and disbursement across all 50 states and Washington, D.C., in relation to state charact

Nutrition and obesity in under-represented population (NOURISH): study protocol to examine the effect of restricted and unrestricted financial benefits on infant food insecurity, growth, and nutrition.

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown that food insecurity (FI) during infancy is associated with higher odds of obesity in early childhood, but the evidence regarding the impact of FI interventions on improving child body mass index (BMI) remains inconclusive. This study explores whether reducing food insecurity during infancy is effective in preventing early life obesity. METHODS: Using a randomized comparative effectiveness design, NOURISH delivers two interventions: an “unrestricted benefit” group that receives a cash benefit in the form of study-specific debit cards, and a “grocery benefit” grou

[Demographic and socioeconomic factors associated with needs for home assistance among community-dwelling elderly: a study from the French Home Survey Handicaps-Disabilities-Dependence].

BACKGROUND: Gains in life expectancy in western countries have mainly come hand in hand with growing chronic diseases and disabilities related to the activities of daily living (ADL) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL). Although these disabilities have been identified as predictors of institutionalization, the elderly in France continue to live at home, in the community, alone or with others. This work aims at identifying and assessing their needs for assistance and looks especially at the demographic and socioeconomic associated features. METHODS: Reported needs for assistance

Effect of COVID-19 on Pet Food Bank Servicing: Quantifying Numbers of Clients Serviced in the Vancouver Downtown Eastside, British Columbia, Canada.

Previous research has focused on the benefits and difficulties of pet ownership in people, who are experiencing homelessness. However, many pet services, such as pet food banks, serve a more varied population of people. Furthermore, the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic has not been documented within the context of pet food banks. Vancouver's Downtown Eastside (DTES) population comprises a notable proportion of the city's overall population and has a high density of people who are experiencing financial hardships, but some of whom do not always experience homelessness. The purpose of this study

Social Assistance Programs and Birth Outcomes: A Systematic Review and Assessment of Nutrition and Health Pathways.

BACKGROUND: Poor birth outcomes are an important global public health problem. Social assistance programs that provide cash or in-kind transfers, such as food or vouchers, hold potential to improve birth outcomes but the evidence on their effectiveness has not been reviewed. OBJECTIVES: We systematically reviewed studies that used experimental or quasi-experimental methods to evaluate the impacts of social assistance programs on outcomes in low- and middle-income countries. METHODS: The Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations (GRADE) system was used to assess the

Food Access in New York City During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Social Media Monitoring Study.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated issues of poverty and food insecurity in New York City, and many residents experienced difficulty accessing available resources to help them get food on the table. Social media presents an opportunity to observe and understand the barriers people face in accessing affordable, nutritious, and culturally appropriate foods. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore the food access discourse during the COVID-19 pandemic on Twitter (subsequently rebranded as X) in New York City by analyzing publicly available tweets posted from March 1, 2020, to March 31,

Food insecure families: description of access and barriers to food from one pediatric primary care center.

Despite evidence that food insecurity negatively impacts child health, health care providers play little role in addressing the issue. To inform potential primary care interventions, we sought to assess a range of challenges faced by food insecure (FI) families coming to an urban, pediatric primary care setting. A cross-sectional study was performed at a hospital-based, urban, academic pediatric primary care clinic that serves as a medical home for approximately 15,000 patients with 35,000 annual visits. Subjects included a convenience sample of caregivers of children presenting for either wel

A study on the performance, structure, composition, and release behavior changes of polybutylene adipate terephthalic acid (PBAT) film during food contact.

Polybutylene adipate terephthalic acid (PBAT) is an emerging biodegradable material in food packaging. However, concerns have been raised regarding the potential hazards it could pose to food safety. In this study, the changes of PBAT films during food contact and the release of small molecules were inestigated by a multiscale approach. On a macro-scale, the surface roughness of the films increased with the reduction in the concentration of food simulants and the increase in contact temperatures, especially after immersion in acidic food environments. On a micro-scale, the crystallinity (Xc) a

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Eligibility and HIV Incidence in the United States.

BACKGROUND: The connection between food insecurity and HIV outcomes is well established. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the primary food safety net program in the United States, may have collateral impacts on HIV incidence. "Broad-based categorical eligibility" for SNAP is a policy that provides a mechanism for states to increase the income or asset limits for SNAP eligibility. METHODS: We estimated the association between the number of new HIV diagnoses in 2010-2014 for each state and (1) state income limits and (2) state asset limits for SNAP eligibility. We fitted mu

Should Canadian health promoters support a food stamp-style program to address food insecurity?

Food insecurity is an urgent public health problem in Canada, affecting 4 million Canadians in 2012, including 1.15 million children, and associated with significant health concerns. With little political will to address this significant policy issue, it has been suggested that perhaps it is time for Canada to try a food stamp-style program. Such a program could reduce rates of food insecurity and improve the nutritional health of low-income Canadians. In this article, we explore the history of the US food stamp program; the key impetus of which was to support farmers and agricultural interest
