Understanding How Persons With Maternal Opioid Use Disorder Experience Public Food Assistance Programs WIC and SNAP.

BACKGROUND: The current opioid epidemic persists in tandem with the food insecurity crisis, especially among pregnant persons and parents with opioid use disorder (OUD). Limited research exists examining the experience of pregnant persons and parents with OUD and their engagement in federal food assistance programs. This understanding is imperative to address service gaps, destigmatize practices, and ensure food assistance programs are culturally relevant and acceptable. Therefore, the aim of this study were (1) to understand food access and nutrition needs among pregnant persons and parents i

Creating Integrated Strategies for Increasing Access to Healthy Affordable Food in Urban Communities: A Case Study of Intersecting Food Initiatives.

In New York and other cities, substantial evidence documents that community food environments interact with inequitable allocation of power, wealth, and services to shape the distribution of diet-related diseases and food insecurity. This case study shows how one Central Brooklyn community organization, Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation, has launched multiple coordinated food initiatives in order to reduce the burden of food-related health problems and boost community development. The report used standard case study methods to document the implementation of the New York City Food and

Reimagining School Meals From a Systems Thinking Perspective: A Case Study of School Meal Supply Chain Collaboration in California.

INTRODUCTION: Food policies and standards regulate school meal equity and quality, yet there is a complex system involved in translating and implementing these standards. To catalyze systems-level thinking in school meals, stakeholders across the supply chain were asked to collaborate in examining the role of dairy as representative of broader food system opportunities and challenges in California school meals. METHODS: This descriptive case study applied the What, So What, Now What reflective framework, 19 phone interviews of school nutrition directors and dairy processors, conducted from Au

Food Insecurity and Food Worries During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Point-In-Time Study of Injured United States Veterans.

US Military Veterans experience higher rates of food insecurity compared to civilians, but the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Veterans is unclear. We conducted a nationwide survey of injured post-9/11 Veterans' food security, Coronavirus exposure, and nutrition habits. Of 193 Veterans, 63 (32.6%) were food insecure. Food insecurity was associated with Hispanic ethnicity (p = 0.02), prior homelessness (p = 0.003), combat service (p < 0.0001), and food-related worries (p = 0.003). Food insecure Veterans were more likely to report anxiety about stigma related to COVID-19 infection (p = 0.007)

The role of syndromic knowledge in Ethiopian veterinarians' treatment of cattle.

Veterinarians play a significant role in the treatment and prevention of livestock diseases at the farm level, safeguarding public health and ensuring food safety. In sub-Saharan Africa, access to quality veterinary services is a major challenge for livestock farmers due to the low number of publicly employed veterinarians, underfunding and privatisation of veterinary services. Low investment in veterinary services and infrastructure, including a lack of laboratories for diagnosis, has made veterinarians rely on their experience and knowledge of cattle disease symptoms developed over years of

Validation of the IDDSI funnel for liquid flow testing.

In 2017, the International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI) introduced the IDDSI flow test which enables patients, clinicians, caregivers, food service professionals and researchers to classify liquid thickness into five levels based on the volume of liquid remaining in a standard 10 mL slip tip syringe after 10 s of flow under gravity. Within a few months of publishing the IDDSI flow test instructions, several barriers emerged: (1) the preferred model of syringe (BD 303134) was not equally accessible around the world, causing some users to perform flow tests with alternate mo

Nutrition: an issue of concern for children with disabilities.

Children with special health care needs should be identified as early as possible. Nutritionists, educators, therapists, parents, primary care clinicians, should serve as interdisciplinary advocates for these children by planning through conversations, meetings, and individualized educational plan objectives to secure any needed services. Intervention services also can involve specialized techniques such as food preparation, stimulation of the eating process, and monitoring of specialized feedings (e.g., gastrostomy tubes). Intervention with children exhibiting special health needs should be i

Differential Health and Social Needs of Older Adults Waitlisted for Public Housing or Housing Choice Vouchers.

Affordable housing is an important form of income security for low-income older persons. This article describes characteristics of older persons waitlisted for either public housing or a housing choice voucher (HCV; previously Section 8) in Portland, Oregon. 358 persons (32% response rate) completed a mailed survey with questions about demographics, health and housing status, food insecurity, and preference for housing with services. Findings indicate that many waitlisted older persons experienced homelessness or housing instability, poor health, high hospital use, and food insecurity. Public

Policy options to increase the provision of free school meals in England: a qualitative exploration of the challenges of policy implementation through stakeholder interviews.

OBJECTIVE: Rising levels of household food insecurity in England, and associated health and well-being impacts for children, have led to calls to expand access to free school meals (FSM). Policymakers have been hesitant to extend provision of FSM due to concerns surrounding acceptability, affordability and implementation challenges. The most effective strategies for expanding FSM are not yet fully understood. This work aims to fill this gap by examining school meal policy from the perspective of multiple stakeholders, to provide actionable recommendations for policies that could expand school

[A global vision of adverse reactions to foods: food allergy and food intolerance].

Over the last years, there has been an increase in adverse food reactions, probably associated with life style changes in the past decades. An adverse food reaction is any clinically abnormal response that can be attributed to ingestion, contact or inhalation of a food, its derivatives or an additive contained in it. They can be classified as food allergy or intolerance. Food allergies are usually immune-mediated, associated with IgE. Adverse reactions to food have a large clinical and social repercussion, which can be fatal in some cases and impair the quality of life of patients. This implie

Policy and sustainability issues.

The need for combined and integrated strategies to address iron deficiency is widely recognized, utilizing targeted supplementation, as well as food based strategies including both fortified and nonfortified foods. The challenge is not so much knowing "what" to do as is understanding "how" to implement effective and sustainable interventions. Because the causes of iron and other micronutrient deficiencies are complex, including inadequate food intake, unsanitary conditions and inadequate health services, the solutions may also be complex, requiring multisectoral and interdisciplinary approache

Protracted, Intermittent Outbreak of Salmonella Mbandaka Linked to a Restaurant - Michigan, 2008-2019.

In 2018, Michigan public health officials determined that a single restaurant in southwest Michigan was the source for a protracted, intermittent outbreak of Salmonella enterica serotype Mbandaka infections occurring since 2008. Isolates from 36 infected persons shared two highly related pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) patterns and highly related whole genome sequencing (WGS) subtypes. The initial focus of the local public health investigation on food items rather than food sources (i.e., restaurants) through a questionnaire, difficulty in food history recollection among ill persons, a

Systematic Review: HIV, Aging, and Housing-A North American Perspective, 2012-2023.

Advances in anti-retroviral therapy (ART) have decreased mortality rates and subsequently led to a rise in the number of HIV-positive people living longer. The housing experiences of this new population of interest-older adults (50 years and older) living with HIV-are under-researched. Understanding the housing experiences and unmet needs of older people with HIV can better provide comprehensive care services for them. This study's systematic review evaluated the peer-reviewed literature reporting housing access/insecurity/assistance/options, housing impact, and unmet needs of older individual
