INTRODUCTION: Osteomyelitis presents with heterogeneous clinical, etiological, and microbiological characteristics depending on anatomical location. While foot osteomyelitis is commonly associated with diabetic foot infections and contiguous spread, non-foot osteomyelitis often arises from post-traumatic, hematogenous, or postoperative causes. However, direct comparative analyses between these two entities remain limited.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 202 adult patients who underwent surgical treatment for osteomyelitis between 2011 and 2026. Patients were d

BACKGROUND: In diabetic foot ulceration, a correlation between pressure and skin temperature is suspected. The aim of this systematic review is to provide a more rigorous analysis of existing literature related to the various technologies used to read and measure both in-shoe plantar pressures, and in-shoe skin temperatures simultaneously.
METHODS: A systematic review of the literature related to the topic was searched in database sources such as Medline OVID, Cochrane Library, PubMed, CONAHL, PROSPERO, and Elsevier. Outcome measures of interest included validity, reliability and responsivene

Multisegment foot models (MFMs) provide a more detailed assessment of foot biomechanics than conventional unisegment foot models (UFMs), yet their added value in individuals with a partial foot amputation remains unclear. The aim of this study was to compare the modified Oxford MFM to a conventional UFM during the stance phase of walking in individuals with a partial foot amputation. Fourteen adults with toe(s) or ray(s) amputation underwent an instrumented gait analysis using force plates and a three-dimensional motion capture system. Joint angles, moments and power were calculated using inve

Cavus foot, defined by a high medial arch, alters plantar pressure distribution and gait biomechanics, often leading to increased forefoot and heel loading, joint stiffness, and musculoskeletal complications. However, specific kinematic differences compared to normal feet remain underexplored. This study aims to analyse gait kinematics differences in subjects with cavus foot versus those with normally aligned feet. A case-control study was carried out in 100 subjects (50 with bilateral cavus foot and 50 with neutral foot) using the PODOSmart® system, which consists of one pairs of smart insole

The aim of this study was to compare outcomes of moderate and severe foot infections in people with and without diabetes mellitus (DM). We retrospectively evaluated 382 patients (77% with DM and 23% non-DM). We collected demographic data, co-morbidities and one-year outcomes including healing, surgical interventions, number of surgeries, length of stay, re-infection and re-hospitalisation. DM patients required more surgeries (2.3 ± 2.2 vs. 1.7 ± 1.3, p = 0.01), but did not have a longer hospital length of stay during the index hospitalisation (DM 10.9 days ±9.2 vs. non-DM = 8.8 days ±5.8, p =

Conditions of ankle instability, peroneal tendon tears, and stress fractures of the lateral metatarsals are commonly encountered in a clinical foot and ankle practice. Evaluation of the supporting foot structure is critical to prevent failure of index procedures. The prominence of the subtle cavus foot is now a recognized entity and must be properly diagnosed and addressed surgically.

Wearing high heels is thought to lead to various foot disorders and injuries such as metatarsal pain, Achilles tendon tension, plantar fasciitis and Haglund malformation. However, there is little available information explaining the specific mechanisms and reasons why wearing high heels causes foot deformity. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the foot kinematics of high heel wearers and compare any differences with barefoot individuals using the Oxford Foot Model (OFM). Fifteen healthy women aged 20-25 years were measured while walking barefoot and when wearing high heels

The aim of this study was to identify and quantify risk factors for amputation in diabetic patients hospitalized for foot infections. This cross-sectional study comprised 100 patients with diabetic infectious complications in the lower limbs. The variables investigated were related to diabetes, infection, and treatment compliance. Multiple Cox regression analysis was performed to identify the variables independently associated with the outcome of amputation. The most prevalent chronic complications were neuropathy and hypertension. Most patients presented with a neuroischemic foot (86%). The M

BACKGROUND: Foot pain is very common in the general population and has been shown to have a detrimental impact on health-related quality of life. This is of particular concern in older people as it may affect activities of daily living and exacerbate problems with balance and gait. The objective of this study is to evaluate the independent relationships between foot pain and mobility limitation in a population of community-dwelling older adults.
METHODS: Population-based cross-sectional study. Participants (n = 1,544) from the Framingham Foot Study (2002-2008) were assessed for physical perfo

The neuropathic foot is a common complication of diabetes mellitus and is associated with development of chronic ulcers and Charcot joints. Treatment of these complications presents a complex management task. This report presents long-term follow-up data on 16 patients with neuropathic changes who were treated with a total contact, laminated, bivalved, rocker-bottom-soled ankle-foot orthosis (TCAFO). Of the 16 patients, 6 were treated for Charcot changes only, 10 were treated for ulcers, and 2 of the 10 had ulcers bilaterally. Eight of the 12 ulcers (67%) healed in an average of 10 months (ran

Diabetic individuals with peripheral neuropathy are at risk for the development of foot ulcers due to musculoskeletal abnormalities and abnormal loading in the gait cycle leading to elevated plantar pressures. To prevent diabetic foot ulcers, practitioners should regularly screen patients for the presence of neuropathy as well as neuroarthropathies and prescribe the appropriate shoes and orthotics based on the best available clinical evidence. Although not widely available, there is potential for data-driven customization of orthotics and shoe wear based on plantar pressure data to prevent the

OBJECTIVES: The objective of the current study was to examine trends in ankle/foot (A/F) injuries during the period 2001-2014, in order to determine whether the incidence of these injuries has changed and whether a previously identified difference in risk by gender still existed. In addition, other driver and crash-related risk factors were examined separately for men and women.
METHODS: Passenger vehicle drivers aged 16+ were identified from NASS-CDS; weighted data were analyzed for model years 2001-2014. Model years (MY) were grouped as 2001-2004 (older) vs. 2005-2014 (newer), and drivers i

This study examined the haemolytic effects of an interval-based running task in fore-foot and rear-foot striking runners. Nineteen male distance runners (10 fore-foot, 9 rear-foot) completed 8 × 3 min repeats at 90% vVO2peak on a motorised treadmill. Pre- and post-exercise venous blood samples were analysed for serum haptoglobin to quantify the haemolytic response to running. Vertical ground reaction forces were also captured via a force plate beneath the treadmill belt. Haptoglobin levels were significantly decreased following exercise (P = 0.001) in both groups (but not between groups), sugg
