Development and Usability Evaluation of an E-Learning Tool for Blended Learning in Pediatric Endocrinology: Formative Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Residents in pediatric endocrinology subspecialty units encounter diverse educational scenarios spanning theory, skills, and attitudes; yet, brief residencies frequently limit their exposure to certain clinical cases. Research in medical education demonstrates that e-learning can address such challenges efficiently. We implemented a blended learning model grounded in the Kolb learning cycle that uses structured, case-based e-learning. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate the utility and usability of blended learning using a novel e-learning tool. METHODS: We used a problem-solving app

Diagnostic branched tree as an assessment and feedback tool in undergraduate pharmacology education.

BACKGROUND: Multiple-choice, true-false, completion, matching, oral presentation type questions have been used as an evaluation criterion in medical education for many years. Although not as old as other question types, performance evaluation and portfolio-like assessment types, can be called alternative evaluation, have been used for a considerable time. While summative assessment maintains its importance in medical education, the value of formative assessment is gradually increasing. In this research, the use of Diagnostic Branched Tree (DBT), which is used both as a diagnostic and feedback

Comparison of vibrotactile and joint-torque feedback in a myoelectric upper-limb prosthesis.

BACKGROUND: Despite the technological advancements in myoelectric prostheses, body-powered prostheses remain a popular choice for amputees, in part due to the natural sensory advantage they provide. Research on haptic feedback in myoelectric prostheses has delivered mixed results. Furthermore, there is limited research comparing various haptic feedback modalities in myoelectric prostheses. In this paper, we present a comparison of the feedback intrinsically present in body-powered prostheses (joint-torque feedback) to a commonly proposed feedback modality for myoelectric prostheses (vibrotacti

Web-Based Prescription Opioid Abuse Prevention for Adolescents: Program Development and Formative Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: The unprecedented number of youths engaged in nonmedical use of prescription opioids (POs), as well as the myriad negative consequences of such misuse, emphasizes the importance of prevention efforts targeting this public health crisis. Although there are several science-based, interactive drug abuse prevention programs focused on preventing the use of nonprescription drugs in youths, to our knowledge, there are no science-based interactive programs that focus on the prevention of PO abuse among adolescents. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to develop and conduct a formative e

Mending metacognitive illusions in JOLs: when neither cognitive nor metacognitive feedback is effective.

Metacognitive monitoring of cognitive processes is not always accurate. Metacognitive illusions occur when metacognitive judgments rely on invalid information or fail to rely on valid information. This study tested the effectiveness of different forms of feedback in mending metacognitive illusions in judgments of learning (JOLs). Across four experiments, participants completed three study-test cycles with JOLs in which they studied different word lists. Participants received feedback or no feedback after each cycle. In Experiments 1 and 2, cognitive feedback about recall performance and JOL fo

Negative feedback circuitry between MIR143HG and RBM24 in Hirschsprung disease.

Hirschsprung disease (HSCR) is a genetic disorder of neural crest development. It is also believed that epigenetic changes plays a role in the progression of this disease. Here we show that the MIR143 host gene (MIR143HG), the precursor of miR-143 and miR-145, decreased cell proliferation and migration and forms a negative feedback loop with RBM24 in HSCR. As RBM24 mRNA is a target of miR-143, upregulation of RBM24 upon an increase in the level of MIR143HG could be attributed to sequestration of miR-143 by MIR143HG (sponge effect). The RBM24 protein was shown to bind to MIR143HG, and subsequen

Sensory Substitution and Augmentation Using 3-Degree-of-Freedom Skin Deformation Feedback.

During tool-mediated interaction with everyday objects, we experience kinesthetic forces and tactile sensations in the form of vibration and skin deformation at the fingerpad. Fingerpad skin deformation is caused by forces applied tangentially and normally to the fingerpad skin, resulting in tangential and normal skin displacement. We designed a device to convey 3-degree-of-freedom (DoF) force information to the user via skin deformation, and conducted two experiments to determine the devices effectiveness for force-feedback substitution and augmentation. For sensory substitution, participants

From AI dependence to reflective collaboration: psychological ownership, competency anxiety, and perceived support in AI-assisted learning.

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) can improve efficiency in academic work. However, it also raises a central psychological question: when AI helps produce a task, why do some learners still experience the final work as their own, whereas others experience it as polished but psychologically distant? This study examines psychological ownership and competency anxiety in AI-assisted learning, distinguishing between dependent AI outsourcing and reflective human-AI collaboration. An exploratory qualitative interview-based design with supplementary background information was used. The backgr

Visual hermeneutics as a tool to introduce empathy and core physician attributes in doctor-patient relationship for first-year medical undergraduate students.

BACKGROUND: The doctor-patient relationship is essential for effective patient care, yet medical education often neglects to nurture the quality such as empathy during the initial years of training. Doctor-patient relationship is one of the modules taught in first year as part of mandatory AETCOM (Attitude, Ethics, and Communication) course in the undergraduate Indian medical curriculum. Hermeneutics, a method of interpretation, can play a vital role in introducing observational and reflective thinking skills. This study aimed to introduce empathy concepts and attributes of a good physician to

Stimulus valence influences the evaluative processing of action outcome.

The aim of the current study is to reveal the influence of prior associations between feedback stimuli and outcomes, in everyday life, on the early and late evaluative processing of outcomes. Participants were subjected to a simple gambling task while their electroencephalograms were recorded. Over two conditions, participants received congruent and incongruent feedback stimuli during the task. Feedback stimuli previously associated with positive outcomes were paired with monetary gain in the congruent condition and paired with monetary loss in the incongruent condition. We analyzed feedback-r

Neural Mechanisms of Feedback Processing and Regulation Recalibration During Neurofeedback Training.

The acquisition of new skills is facilitated by providing individuals with feedback that reflects their performance. This process creates a closed loop that involves feedback processing and regulation recalibration to promote effective training. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)-based neurofeedback is unique in applying this principle by delivering direct feedback on the self-regulation of brain activity. Understanding how feedback-driven learning occurs requires examining how feedback is evaluated and how regulation adjusts in response to feedback signals. In this pre-registered me

Adaptation of a brief intervention to support engagement in early psychosis services: a service user-informed psychotherapy modification and study protocol.

UNLABELLED: Early intervention services (EIS) for psychosis are associated with improved clinical and functional outcomes, yet disengagement from treatment remains common. Psychological barriers to early engagement such as stigma, mistrust, and negative treatment expectancies have been identified yet few interventions have been developed to directly target these. Just Do You is a brief, psychotherapeutic meta-intervention originally developed for youth with severe mental illness to target identified barriers to engagement and has been demonstrated to improve engagement and recovery.
