Numerical prediction of portal hypertension by a hydrodynamic blood flow model combing with the fractal theory.

Portal hypertension (PH) can cause a series of complications, therefore, early prediction of PH is important. Traditional diagnostic methods are harmful to the human body, while other non-invasive methods are inaccurate and lack physical meaning. Combining various fractal theories and flow laws, we establish a complete portal system blood flow model from the Computed Tomography (CT) and angiography images. The portal vein pressure (PP) is obtained by the flow rate data from the Doppler ultrasound and the pressure-velocity relationship is established by the model. Three normal participants and

Complexity of information processing in obsessive-compulsive disorder based on fractal analysis of EEG signal.

The human brain is considered as a self-organizing system with self-similarities at various temporal and spatial scales called "fractals". In this scale-free system, it is possible to decode the complexity of information processing using fractal behavior. For instance, the complexity of information processing in the brain can be evaluated by fractal dimensions (FDs). However, it is unclear how over-elaboration of information processing impacts the dimensionality of its fractal behavior. In this study, we hypothesized that FDs of electroencephalogram (EEG) in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)

Identification of EMCI in MR Brainstem Structure Using Fractal Measures and Random Forest Approach.

In this work, an attempt has been made to assess the texture variations of brainstem occurring in the Early Mild Cognitive Impairment (EMCI) condition. Fractal dimension is calculated for the segmented brainstem volume using Higuchi's and Detrending moving average (DMA) method. These measures are validated using Random forest classifier. DMA shows better performance when compared to Higuchi's method in categorising EMCI stage. Thus, the proposed approach using brainstem image's DMA fractal measures with random forest can be used in diagnosis of EMCI.

Tensile behavior of bio-inspired hierarchical suture joint with uniform fractal interlocking design.

Hierarchical interlocking leads to optimal mechanical properties for sutures in nature. Inspired by this, a design method for describing a hierarchal triangular suture joint based on Koch fractal interlocking is developed. The effect of geometrical interlocking was examined by the analysis of the load transmission between joined parts. Samples of hierarchal suture joints were fabricated by using a high-resolution 3D printer and tensile tests were conducted to examine the mechanical behavior of these joints. The surface displacement and strain fields were obtained using the Digital Image Correl

Differences in Chromatin Texture and Nuclear Fractal Dimension Between Hashimoto's and Lymphocytic Thyroiditis Lymphocytes.

Previous evidence suggested that lymphocytic thyroiditis (LT) was a variant of Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT), thus the aim of the current study is to quantify structural changes in histological specimens taken from HT and LT patients. A total of 600 images containing a single lymphocyte nucleus (300 nuclei per group) were obtained from 20 patients with HT and LT. In order to quantify changes in the nuclear architecture of investigated lymphocytes, the fractal dimension (FD) and some gray-level co-occurrence matrix texture parameters (angular second moment, inverse difference moment, contrast, e

A diffusivity model for predicting VOC diffusion in porous building materials based on fractal theory.

Most building materials are porous media, and the internal diffusion coefficients of such materials have an important influences on the emission characteristics of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The pore structure of porous building materials has a significant impact on the diffusion coefficient. However, the complex structural characteristics bring great difficulties to the model development. The existing prediction models of the diffusion coefficient are flawed and need to be improved. Using scanning electron microscope (SEM) observations and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) tests of

Evaluation of scaling and root planing effect in generalized chronic periodontitis by fractal and multifractal analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Fractal and multifractal analysis are useful additional non-invasive methods for quantitative description of complex morphological features. However, the quantitative and qualitative assessment of morphologic changes within human gingival cells and tissues are still unexplored. The aim of this work is to assess the structural gingival changes in patients with generalized chronic periodontitis (GCP), before and after scaling and root planing (SRP) by using fractal and multifractal analysis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twelve adults with untreated chronic periodontitis were

Generation of fractal dimension images and its application to automatic edge detection in brain MRI.

We have developed four methods to generate a fractal dimension image and have applied them to the brain MRI. We have adopted four types of scanning methods, "CONVENTIONAL", "OVERLAPPING", "SYMMETRIC" and "FOLDED" to estimate the fractal dimension. The first three methods show almost the same fractal dimension images and their values were between two and three. In the "FOLDED" method, we were able to obtain the images in which the edge of a narrow region including dura and scalp surrounding the brain was selectively enhanced in the T1-weighted MRI. This is found to be a new edge-enhancing filte

Insights into the effects of microscopic fractal features, supramolecular structures on digestibility of retrograded starch gels.

The digestibility of starch gels is closely associated with their microstructure, yet quantitative understanding remains limited. Starch gels prepared from wheat, high-amylose wheat, corn, high-amylose corn, potato, pea, and sweet potato starches were investigated using fractal analysis, DSC, ATR-FTIR, XRD, and digestion kinetic. Six starches were evaluated at 10%, 20%, and 30%, whereas high-amylose corn starch was tested at 15%, 25%, and 35% because it did not form a stable, testable gel at 10%. Increasing starch concentration was generally associated with greater microstructural complexity a

LSD reconfigures cortical dynamics through faster brain rhythms and increased fractal dimension.

Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) profoundly alters conscious experience, yet the electrophysiological mechanisms by which it reshapes neural dynamics remain incompletely understood. A hallmark of psychedelic states is widespread cortical desynchronization, typically inferred from reductions in spectral power, but whether such effects reflect genuine weakening of neural oscillations or are confounded by shifts in oscillatory peak frequencies remains unresolved. We combine source-resolved magnetoencephalography (MEG), spectral parameterization, temporal complexity metrics, and interpretable mach

Fractal analysis of trabecular bone changes in different stages of periodontal disease on panoramic radiographs.

BACKGROUND: Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory condition characterized not only by clinical attachment loss and alveolar bone destruction but also by alterations in trabecular bone microarchitecture. Conventional radiographic evaluation primarily focuses on macroscopic bone loss and may fail to detect early microstructural changes. Fractal analysis enables quantitative assessment of trabecular bone complexity and may provide additional diagnostic information from routinely acquired dental radiographs. This study aimed to evaluate trabecular bone microarchitectural changes associated

Modeling chromatin fractal structure and dynamics: Crosslinked single chain under active forces.

Chromatin folding during interphase is organized in a compact, fractal-like manner with minimal entanglements. Experimental studies estimate a mass (Hausdorff) fractal dimension of df ≈ 2.77, similar-yet not equal-to the prediction of the fractal globule model df = 3. While the fractal globule model describes a densely packed linear polymer with no crosslinking, a variety of crosslinks are ubiquitous in in vivo chromatin architecture, originating from, e.g., complexes such as cohesin and condensin associated with the structural maintenance of the chromosome family, lamin-A proteins, and other

Fractal analysis as a tool for distinguishing periradicular rarefactions in endodontically diseased teeth: a diagnostic study.

AIM: This study evaluated whether fractal analysis of periapical radiographs can detect periradicular disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty periapical radiographs of mandibular molars were divided into four groups based on the Periapical Index (PAI) (n = 15 per group; scores 1-4). Fractal analysis of periapical and furcation regions was performed using the box-counting method in ImageJ. Multiple region of interest (ROI) sizes were tested (20 × 20, 25 × 25, 30 × 30, 40 × 40, 50 × 50, 60 × 60, 70 × 70, 20 × 50, and 20 × 40 pixels) to determine the best correlation with PAI scores. Spectral, Information-Theoretic and Thermodynamic Properties of a Fractal Position-Dependent Mass Schrödinger System.

In this work, we investigate the spectral, information-theoretic, and thermodynamic properties of a fractal Schrödinger system with position-dependent mass subject to an effective semiconductor-like confinement. We employ a fractal momentum operator and a Von Roos Hamiltonian with BenDaniel-Duke ordering to obtain exact analytical solutions for the energy spectrum and wave functions. The interplay between the fractal parameter α, the effective lattice scale l0, and the harmonic confinement strength ω is explored. We perform a comprehensive analysis of the Shannon entropy, Fisher information, a

Continuously pleated torus or strange nonchaotic attractors seen as continuously fractalized quasiperiodic attractors.

Toroidal chaos designates a chaotic solution that is structured in the neighborhood of a torus. For being chaotic, such a torus needs to be discontinuously fractalized to present a Cantor set, ensuring the great sensitivity to initial conditions required for chaos. A fractal is related to self-similarity and a non-integer dimension. In fact, although clearly introduced as such by Mandelbrot, it was never written in a paper related to strange nonchaotic attractors that an object can be fractal in two very different ways: under a continuous way, as a coastline, or in a discontinuous way, as a Ca

Mandibular bone changes in children with ADHD: evaluation using fractal analysis and mandibular indices.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown that abnormalities in the oxytocin system in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may affect bone mineral density, and that medications used to treat ADHD may cause growth suppression. This study aimed to evaluate bone structure and microarchitecture in children diagnosed with ADHD using mandibular indices and fractal dimension analysis as well as to compare these results with those of healthy children. METHODS: The study included 61 children aged 4–15 years who had been diagnosed with ADHD, along with 122 healthy children matche
