Computational Multieffect Analysis of Blood-Based Trihybrid Nanofluid Flow With Nanoparticles Through a Stenotic Artery.

This study is aimed at examining the computational modeling of the blood flow of a trihybrid nanofluid with nanoparticles such as Ag, Au, and Cu to simulate the hemodynamics parameters and heat transfer within a constricted channel geometry that directly parallels the flow conditions in a stenosed artery. The flow is defined as an unsteady, incompressible, laminar Newtonian fluid, with blood exhibiting Newtonian properties at elevated shear rates. An algorithm for mass, velocity, and energy, as well as a fine element-sized mesh, was developed using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techni

Microcirculation and Heart Failure.

The idea of coronary microcirculation playing a role in the pathophysiology of heart failure dates from decades ago, with authors hypothesizing that structural and functional alterations in the coronary microcirculation could potentially contribute to heart failure. It is known that in a wide range of primary cardiomyopathies, from dilated to hypertrophic, there are pathological alterations in myocardial vasculature structure and function, playing a role in the clinical course of the disease. Needless to say, many patients with normal epicardial coronary arteries can suffer from coronary micro

Anesthetic management of patients with dilated cardiomyopathy for noncardiac surgery.

The gastrointestinal tract contains complex fluids, such as mucus, chyme, and water, that can significantly influence capsule robot locomotion by reducing friction or introducing hydrodynamic drag. This study presents a bidirectional fluid-structure interaction model that captures the dynamics of a vibro-impact capsule self-propelling through a fluid-filled small intestine. The model couples the motion of the magnetically actuated capsule, the viscoelastic deformation of the intestinal wall, and a gas-liquid two-phase flow field. Numerical predictions were systematically validated against expe

Rapid detection of Bacillus anthracis by γ phage amplification and lateral flow immunochromatography.

New, rapid point-of-need diagnostic methods for Bacillus anthracis detection can enhance civil and military responses to accidental or deliberate dispersal of anthrax as a biological weapon. Current laboratory-based methods for clinical identification of B. anthracis require 12 to 120h, and are confirmed by plaque assay using the well-characterized γ typing phage, which requires an additional minimum of 24h for bacterial culture. To reduce testing time, the natural specificity of γ phage amplification was investigated in combination with lateral flow immunochromatography (LFI) for rapid, point

Recent advances in artificial intelligence for cardiac CT: Enhancing diagnosis and prognosis prediction.

Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) for cardiac computed tomography (CT) have shown great potential in enhancing diagnosis and prognosis prediction in patients with cardiovascular disease. Deep learning, a type of machine learning, has revolutionized radiology by enabling automatic feature extraction and learning from large datasets, particularly in image-based applications. Thus, AI-driven techniques have enabled a faster analysis of cardiac CT examinations than when they are analyzed by humans, while maintaining reproducibility. However, further research and validation are requir

Fluid Mechanical Effects of Fetal Aortic Valvuloplasty for Cases of Critical Aortic Stenosis with Evolving Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome.

Fetuses with critical aortic stenosis (FAS) are at high risk of progression to HLHS by the time of birth (and are thus termed "evolving HLHS"). An in-utero catheter-based intervention, fetal aortic valvuloplasty (FAV), has shown promise as an intervention strategy to circumvent the progression, but its impact on the heart's biomechanics is not well understood. We performed patient-specific computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations based on 4D fetal echocardiography to assess the changes in the fluid mechanical environment in the FAS left ventricle (LV) directly before and 2 days after FAV.

Fundamentals of Gas-Free Calibrated fMRI for Oxidative Metabolic Neuroimaging.

Brain's high energy demands require abundant production of ATP from glucose oxidation, mandating coupling between neural activity and nutrient supply. Understanding how neural activity augments blood flow (CBF) to support metabolism of glucose (CMRglc) and oxygen (CMRO2) can help unravel mysteries of neurovascular and neurometabolic couplings underlying functional MRI (fMRI) with blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) contrast. Key to this enigma is oxygen extraction fraction (OEF). Fundamentally, OEF is defined by flow-metabolism (i.e., CBF-CMRO2) coupling generating mitochondrial ATP to si

A positive pressure system for selective human exposure to gas and particulate mixed atmospheres.

INTRODUCTION: Exposure to air pollution containing particulates (PM) and gas-phase volatile organic compounds (VOCs), is a leading cause of human morbidity and mortality globally. Devising effective protective public health strategies requires an assessment of the relative contribution of PM and VOCs to the health effects of air pollution exposure. METHODS: To enable studies of VOCs isolated from mixed atmospheres, we developed a positive air pressure exposure system that permits the subject to breathe unimpeded by the pressure drop imposed by filtering respirators. This system uses pumps to

A novel capillary-driven dual-mode imaging flow cytometry system for malaria parasite detection and quantification.

Malaria remains a significant global health burden, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions with limited resources. Accurate quantification of parasitemia is critical for effective treatment and disease management. While microscopy is the gold standard in diagnostics, it is labour-intensive and highly dependent on operator expertise. Here, we present a capillary-driven image flow cytometer with a cost comparable to microscopy-based diagnostics. This system integrates brightfield and fluorescence imaging into a single image, encoding morphological information in the red channel and flu

Hemodynamics in aortic dissections: A fluid-solid interaction study in an idealized dissection model with a false lumen side branch.

Side-branches (SBs) emanating from the false lumen (FL) in Type-B aortic dissection (TBAD) has been shown to influence patency and FL growth, making FL hemodynamics crucial to understand. This study employs a strongly coupled Fluid-Solid interaction simulation to compare FL hemodynamics in four scenarios: (1) without SB (NSB), (2) single SB in FL (SB_FL), (3) single SB in FL with no re-entry tear (SB_FL_1T), and (4) single SB in true lumen (SB_TL). A pulsatile mass flow is imposed at the inlet, while 3-element windkessel models are applied at the outlets, ensuring equal total vascular resistan

Mechanisms of therapeutic antibodies immunogenicity: infliximab oligomeric aggregates increase T-cell response and uptake by dendritic cells involving mannose-sensitive receptor CD206.

INTRODUCTION: Aggregation of therapeutic antibodies (Ab)s is now recognized as a major product-related factor associated with increased potential of immunogenicity. Regulatory agencies have established limits for the presence of (sub)visible particles in commercialized products. These particles are considered a potential risk factor for the development of unwanted immune responses. However, little is known concerning the role of oligomeric Abs aggregates of nanometric size in Abs' immunogenicity. The objective of this work was to better understand the role and the mechanisms of T-cell response

Species-Specific Isotope Dilution Methodology for the SI Traceable Quantification of Serum Human Ferritin Light Chain (FTL).

There is an urgent need for reference methodologies to assign SI traceable values to quality control (QC) materials for protein biomarkers to validate biochemical tests currently used in disease diagnosis and patient-specific therapeutics. Here we describe a novel methodology specifically developed for the SI traceable quantification of human serum ferritin light chain (FTL), an established biomarker for the diagnosis of iron-related disorders such as hemochromatosis. Natural and 34S isotopically enriched human FTL standards were recombinantly expressed using the HEK-293 mammalian cell system.

AF4 and PEG Precipitation as Predictive Assays for Antibody Self-Association.

Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) are often formulated as high-protein-concentration solutions, which in some cases can exhibit physical stability issues such as high viscosity and opalescence. To ensure that mAb-based drugs can meet their manufacturing, stability, and delivery requirements, it is advantageous to screen for and select mAbs during discovery that are not prone to such behaviors. It has been recently shown that both these macroscopic properties can be predicted to a certain extent from the diffusion interaction parameter (kD), which is a measure of self-association under dilute condit

Hydrate Growth on Methane Gas Bubbles in the Presence of Salt.

Methane bubble dispersions in a water column can be observed in both vertical subsea piping as well as subsea gas seepages. Hydrate growth has been shown to occur at the gas-water interface under flowing conditions, yet the majority of the current literature is limited to quiescent systems. Gas hydrate risks in subsea piping have been shown to increase in late life production wells with increased water content and with gas-in-water bubble dispersions. The dissolution of subsea methane seepages into seawater, or methane release into the atmosphere, can be affected by hydrate film growth on risi
