Bilateral stress fracture of the scaphoid. A case report.

Bilateral stress fractures of the scaphoid bones in a gymnast are reported and discussed with special consideration of the possible differential diagnoses; bipartite scaphoid and pseudarthrosis of the scaphoid bone. The relevance of the mechanical factors involved and the abduction and dorsiflexion of the wrist in gymnastics are suggested as likely pathomechanisms.

Review of Current Management of Navicular Stress Fractures in Athletes.

CONTEXT: Navicular stress fractures are relatively uncommon injuries seen most frequently in high-level athletes due to repetitive compressive and shearing forces. The tenuous arterial network and central watershed area predispose the navicular to stress fractures and healing complications. Diagnosing these stress fractures can be difficult for Certified Athletic Trainers due to the ambiguous and insidious nature of these injuries. Identifying risk factors and clinical signs of navicular stress fractures is important to optimally treat these injuries. Intrinsic risk factors include female sex,

Femoral neck stress fractures after trampoline exercise: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Femoral neck stress fractures (FNSFs) are commonly found in long-distance running athletes. For FNSFs, early diagnosis and proper treatment are important. The objective of this study was to report FNSFs that occurred after excessive exercise using trampoline in middle-aged women. CASE SUMMARY: The patient was a 43-year-old woman who exercised jumping on a trampoline for 6 wk for 1-3 h a day to diet. Exercise includes repeated flexion-extension of the hip joint. The patient was admitted to the hospital due to sudden bilateral groin pain that occurred suddenly during a trampoline ex

Femoral Neck Stress Fractures in Sport: A Current Concepts Review.

Femoral neck stress fractures (FNSFs) account for 3% of all sport-related stress fractures. The commonest causative sports are marathon and long-distance running. The main types of FNSF are compression-sided, tension-sided and displaced. The most common reported symptom is exercise-related groin pain. Radiographs form the first line of investigation, with MRI the second-line investigation. The management of FNSFs is guided by the location and displacement of the fracture. Delay in diagnosis is common and increases the likelihood of fracture displacement. Sporting outcomes are considerably wors

Femoral Neck Stress Fractures and Imaging Features of Femoroacetabular Impingement.

BACKGROUND: Prior literature has suggested an association between the radiographic signs of femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) and femoral neck stress fractures (FNSF) or femoral neck stress reactions (FNSR). At the time of the writing of this article, no study has described the association of FAI and FNSF/FNSR along with the need for surgical intervention and outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of radiographic features of FAI in patients diagnosed with FNSF. DESIGN: Retrospective case series. SETTING: Tertiary care, institutional setting. PATIENTS: A medical records search pr

Rehabilitation and return to running after lower limb stress fractures.

Lower limb stress fractures are common injuries in runners. In terms of treatment, much of the medical literature has focused primarily on rest and cessation of running, but little has been written about the rehabilitation and functional progression of runners following a lower limb stress fracture. This article reviews the scientific evidence behind common rehabilitation concepts used for runners recovering from these injuries and also discusses sport-specific training modalities such as deep water running and antigravity treadmill training. Overall this article is intended to be a practical

Dietary intake and stress fractures among elite male combat recruits.

BACKGROUND: Appropriate and sufficient dietary intake is one of the main requirements for maintaining fitness and health. Inadequate energy intake may have a negative impact on physical performance which may result in injuries among physically active populations. The purpose of this research was to evaluate a possible relationship between dietary intake and stress fracture occurrence among combat recruits during basic training (BT). METHODS: Data was collected from 74 combat recruits (18.2 ± 0.6 yrs) in the Israeli Defense Forces. Data analyses included changes in anthropometric measures, die

Dietary and training predictors of stress fractures in female runners.

PURPOSE: To compare female runners with and without a history of stress fractures to determine possible predictors of such fractures. METHODS: 27 female runners (age 18-40 yr) who had had at least 1 stress fracture were matched to a control sample of 32 female runners without a history of stress fractures. Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (iDXA). Subjects answered questionnaires on stress-fracture history, training, menstrual status, and diet. RESULTS: No significant differences were found in menstrual characteristics, diet and dairy intake, or bone

Genetic predisposition for femoral neck stress fractures in military conscripts.

BackgroundStress fractures are a significant problem among athletes and soldiers and may result in devastating complications or even permanent handicap. Genetic factors may increase the risk, but no major susceptibility genes have been identified. The purpose of this study was to search for possible genetic factors predisposing military conscripts to femoral neck stress fractures.ResultsEight genes involved in bone metabolism or pathology (COL1A1, COL1A2, OPG, ESR1, VDR, CTR, LRP5, IL-6) were examined in 72 military conscripts with a femoral neck stress fracture and 120 controls. Bilateral femoral neck stress fractures in a fire academy student.

Unilateral femoral neck stress fractures are well documented in active patients; however, the risk of a subsequent contralateral stress fracture remains unknown in patients who continue to be active. This article describes a 24-year-old male fire academy student who sustained a left femoral neck stress fracture, followed approximately 11 months later by a right femoral neck stress fracture, both of which went on to completely displace. A review of the index radiographs of each hip from outside institutions revealed femoral neck stress fractures that went undiagnosed until they displaced. The p

Acetabular retroversion in military recruits with femoral neck stress fractures.

UNLABELLED: Acetabular retroversion (AR) alters load distribution across the hip and is more prevalent in pathologic conditions involving the hip. We hypothesized the abnormal orientation and mechanical changes may predispose certain individuals to stress injuries of the femoral neck. We retrospectively reviewed the anteroposterior (AP) pelvic radiographs of 54 patients (108 hips) treated for a femoral neck stress fracture (FNSF) and compared these radiographs with those for a control group of patients with normal pelvic radiographs. We determined presence of a crossover sign (COS), femoral ne

Femoral neck stress fractures in military personnel--a case series.

Femoral neck stress fractures (FNSF) are uncommon, representing 5% of all stress fractures. In military personnel, FNSF represents one of the more severe complications of training, which can result in medical discharge. Clinical examination findings are often non-specific and plain radiography may be inconclusive--leading to missed or late diagnosis of FNSF This paper highlights the significance of FNSFs in military personnel and alerts physicians to the potential diagnosis. We identified all military recruits, aged 17 to 26, who attended the Infantry Training Centre (Catterick, U.K.), over a

Stress fractures of the medial great toe sesamoids in athletes.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether specific symptoms and findings are present in patients with symptomatic stress fractures of the sesamoids of the great toe and, if so, whether partial sesamoidectomy is sufficient for successful treatment. Five consecutive athletes (five females; mean age 16.8 years [range, 13 to 22 years]) with six feet that were treated for symptomatic stress fractures of the sesamoids of the great toe were included in this study. Four athletes (five feet) performed rhythmic sports gymnastics; the fifth athlete was a long jumper. Some swelling to the forefoo

Fatigue stress fractures of the sacrum: diagnosis with MR imaging.

The aim of this study was to describe the MRI findings and clinical observations in a fatigue stress fracture of the sacrum. In this retrospective study, 380 conscripts (53 women, 327 men; age range 18-29 years, mean age 20.7 years) who suffered from stress-related hip pain were studied with MRI of the pelvis. The findings of MRI were evaluated with regard to stress fracture of the sacrum. Thirty-one (8%) patients had MRI changes in signal intensity of the cranial part of the sacrum, extending to the first and second sacral foramina. The MRI changes in signal intensity were intermediate on T1-
