Psychopathological states among Congolese health workers during the first wave of COVID-19 pandemic: links with emotion regulation and social support.

UNLABELLED: Background: The COVID-19 pandemic is an unprecedented stressor for frontline healthcare workers, notably increasing acute stress disorder and depression rates. Emotion regulation and social support could be major protective factors against such psychopathological states, but their role has not been explored outside Western contexts. Objective: To assess the association between emotion regulation, social support, acute stress disorder, and depression among healthcare workers directly confronted with the first wave of COVID-19 pandemic in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Chromoblastomycosis: a case series from Sumba, eastern Indonesia.

Chromoblastomycosis is a highly neglected implantation mycosis, typically affecting agricultural workers in impoverished rural communities in (sub)tropical regions. We present a case series of eight individuals with chromoblastomycosis that were identified through teledermatology in Sumba, a remote island in eastern Indonesia. We highlight the challenges faced in managing complex diseases like chromoblastomycosis in underserved communities and illustrate the value of telemedicine in empowering frontline healthcare workers and improving access to skin care.

The Mental Health Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Health and Social Care Workers.

The COVID-19 pandemic placed exceptional strain on essential services, raising urgent concerns about the mental well-being of workers in critical sectors. This study examines the short- and medium-term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of health and social care (HSC) workers in the UK relative to other occupational groups. Using data from the UK Household Longitudinal Study and measuring mental health via the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ), we apply a difference-in-differences strategy, where both groups could be treated only in the second period (a pre-post design), to

Exploring RN Resignation Experiences.

The COVID‑19 pandemic has had a catastrophic and enduring impact on frontline nurses, contributing to burnout, stress, and widespread workforce disruption. This qualitative study used Thorne's interpretive description methodology to explore the lived experiences of nursing students, new graduate nurses, and nurses who resigned within their first year of practice during the pandemic. Semi‑structured interviews were conducted across multiple US regions to understand how pandemic‑era educational and clinical experiences shaped perceptions of nursing, career trajectories, and readiness for practic

How 'Cracks' in Canada's Public Services System Manifested as Moral (Di)Stress or Resilience for Emergency Management Personnel During COVID-19: A Critical Realist Study.

Organizations ought to demonstrate a responsibility for conditions that reduce moral stress and enhance moral resilience for their employees. No literature to date has explored how Emergency Management Personnel (EMP) experience both moral stress and distress [(di)stress], building up to stigma during health crises, given their role in emergency management operations. This study draws from a primary study of EMP, including frontline and first responders and those in leadership, who reported structural stigma during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our research question was, In what ways did structural s

The feminist care work in abortion funds.

We contribute to the research on care work and emotion work through a focus on abortion fund workers in an abortion restrictive landscape. We utilize interview data collected from 23 abortion fund staff and volunteers serving Texans after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and a subsequent Texas Executive Order that suspended abortion care for 30 days. We find that abortion restrictions led to increased workloads for abortion fund workers and more desperate situations for callers, which then necessitated fund workers to provide intensive emotional support to callers. This led some volunteers t

Clinical Symptom Patterns as Predictors of SARS-CoV-2 Infection in Healthcare Workers in Puerto Rico.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by SARS-CoV-2, has posed major risks for healthcare workers (HCWs) worldwide. This study assessed the prevalence of infection and its relationship with demographic and clinical characteristics among HCWs at the University of Puerto Rico Adult Hospital. A total of 132 individuals were enrolled, of whom six tested positive (4.55%). The study population was predominantly female (78.8%) with a mean age of 41 years, and although men showed higher odds of infection (OR = 3.98), the difference was not significant. Symptom presence was strongly associated wi

Challenges and Counteracting Strategies Including Optimum Health Service Practices for Frontline Nurses During the Mpox Outbreak and Futuristic Vision.

INTRODUCTION: Monkeypox (mpox) is an evolving infectious disease caused by the monkeypox virus (MPXV). On July 23, 2022, the WHO declared the recent mpox outbreaks a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC), which terminated on May 11, 2023. As of July 11, 2023, 88,288 confirmed cases and 149 deaths have been reported from 112 countries and territories. Currently, mpox is not a PHEIC, as the outbreak and its impacts are nearly over. Nurses played significant roles during the mpox 2022 outbreak as frontline workers. PURPOSE: In light of the impending mpox global outbreak in 202

"And we just have to keep going": Task shifting and the production of burnout among overdose response workers with lived experience.

Overdose response programs in North America increasingly employ task shifting-shifting overdose response tasks to less specialized workers-to increase effectiveness and promote involvement of people with lived/living experience of drug use (PWLE). In Canada, task shifting has occurred through community-driven implementation of overdose response programs staffed primarily by PWLE. The implications of this task shifting on workers' well-being and service delivery has received little scholarly consideration, despite reports of widespread burnout among frontline responders. This study examines exp

Psycho-behavioral responses of Nigerian health workers to an initial human-to-human transmission of the coronavirus disease.

Previous pandemics have had significant impact on psychological well-being of front-line health care workers. Issues such as fear of contracting the disease, high workload as a result of high numbers of infected cases, increased job stress and unavailability of personal protective equipment have been implicated in development of psychological distress in this subset of individuals. The aim of the present paper is to describe psychobehavioral responses of health care workers and potential predictors of emotional response at onset of COVID- 19 outbreak in Nigeria. Psychological Distress, Resilience, and Immunoinflammatory Signatures in Healthcare Workers During COVID-19.

The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly affected healthcare workers, increasing vulnerability to neuropsychiatric disorders, such as anxiety and depression. Psychological distress may be shaped by resilience, coping behaviours, and immune dysregulation. We investigated psychological distress symptoms, resilience, alcohol use, and cytokine profiles in 1440 workers from four hospitals in Fortaleza, Brazil. Participants were classified as frontline or second-line workers and assessed with the SRQ-20, CD-RISC, and AUDIT. Blood samples were analysed for SARS-CoV-2 antibodies and cytokines. Data were c

Interventions to support the resilience and mental health of frontline health and social care professionals during and after a disease outbreak, epidemic or pandemic: a mixed methods systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Evidence from disease epidemics shows that healthcare workers are at risk of developing short- and long-term mental health problems. The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned about the potential negative impact of the COVID-19 crisis on the mental well-being of health and social care professionals. Symptoms of mental health problems commonly include depression, anxiety, stress, and additional cognitive and social problems; these can impact on function in the workplace. The mental health and resilience (ability to cope with the negative effects of stress) of frontline health an

Supporting healthy weight in times of crisis: results of a one-year community health worker-led intervention among food (in)secure low-income Latinas.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a major health crisis, one that left the US healthcare system overburdened and with persisting health disparities between certain groups. A group that was and remains disproportionately affected is low-income Latino women (Latinas), especially those with food insecurity. Community health worker (CHW)-led interventions have been successful at improving the results of interventions among disadvantaged populations but their efficacy during times of crisis is not clear. Our purpose was to assess the one-year effects of an intervention for low-income ov

Barriers for uptake of COVID antivirals in multicultural communities - Exploring health service provider's reflections on inequities.

Timely access to COVID-19 antivirals is essential for high-risk populations; however, access remains inequitable for many multicultural communities. This study aims to capture the perspectives and experiences of frontline and multicultural support workers on barriers and enablers to antiviral access for members of multicultural communities in New South Wales (NSW) during COVID-19. We conducted three focus groups with 13 frontline and multicultural support workers employed by NSW Health in three local health districts between February and April 2025 to capture participants' reflections on the 2

Leveraging local knowledge for crisis management: a practice-based approach to managing uncertainty in healthcare during COVID-19.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Crises like the COVID-19 pandemic are inherently uncertain, dynamic and generate broader consequences on organisations, challenging traditional crisis management approaches. Conventional approaches often neglect the mechanisms and processes frontline practitioners enact in their local practices to adapt effectively. This study explores how healthcare professionals (HPs) at a university hospital centre developed and mobilised local knowledge to rapidly respond to the evolving conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: We conducted an interpretive single case study at a desig
