Food additives & contaminants. Part A, Chemistry, analysis, control, exposure & risk assessment2014eng
The European corn borer (ECB) plays an important role in promoting Fusarium verticillioides infections and in the consequent fumonisin contamination in maize grain in temperate areas. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether the ECB feeding activity could also affect the occurrence of emerging mycotoxins in maize kernels. During the 2008-10 period, natural infestation of the insect was compared, in field research, with the protection of infestation, which was obtained by using an entomological net. The ears collected in the protected plots were free from ECB attack, while those subj

Mycotoxins are secondary metabolites produced by certain fungi, posing significant health risks to humans and animals through contaminated food and feed. These fungi, and consequently the mycotoxins which they produce, are strongly influenced by weather, and this shifts over time due to climate change, leading to more frequent and severe events, such as heat waves, storms, and heavy rainfall. This study investigates how long-term weather trends and climatic factors impacted mycotoxin levels in corn samples over a 17-year period (2006-2022) across 12 countries, with a focus on 136 specific weat

In this study, liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was employed to analyze the prevalence of 10 mycotoxins in 140 samples from the Chinese market, aiming to assess the exposure of Chinese individuals to these mycotoxins through the consumption of wine, baijiu, and huangjiu. Mycotoxins were detected in 98% of the samples, with fumonisins (FBs), deoxynivalenol (DON), and zearalenone (ZEN) exhibiting positive rates exceeding 50%. Regarding the exposure of the Chinese population to mycotoxins resulting from alcoholic beverage consumption, fruit wine intake made a relatively s

Food shortages and a lack of food supply regulation in developing countries often leads to chronic exposure of vulnerable populations to hazardous mixtures of mycotoxins, including aflatoxin B(1) (AFB(1)) and fumonisin B(1) (FB(1)). A refined calcium montmorillonite clay [i.e. uniform particle size NovaSil (UPSN)] has been reported to tightly bind these toxins, thereby decreasing bioavailability in humans and animals. Hence, our objectives in the present study were to examine the ability of UPSN to bind mixtures of AFB(1) and FB(1) at gastrointestinally relevant pH in vitro, and to utilize a r

Mycotoxicoses are usually a consideration in large animal species but can affect companion animals as well. Due to increasing interest and the ease of using rabbits as laboratory models, a growing number of published experimental studies discuss the effects of various mycotoxins on this species. However, the available evidence is fragmented and heterogeneous, and has not recently been collated in a review, to my knowledge. Although mycotoxicoses in rabbits are typically subclinical, clinical signs can include weight loss, anorexia, gastrointestinal disorders, stunted growth, reproductive abnor

Six types of animal-feed ingredients and swine mixed feeds from factories in northern Thailand were sampled for analysis of mycotoxins. Mycotoxins found in foodstuffs included aflatoxins, fumonisins, ochratoxins, T-2 toxin, vomitoxin and zearalenone. Samples of airborne dust generated while handling animal feed were collected and analysed to assess exposure of workers to aflatoxins. The average aflatoxin level in the control air samples was 0.99 ng/m3. Higher levels of aflatoxins were found in the air samples taken by samplers attached to five workers adding hydrated sodium calcium aluminosili

Mycotoxins pose severe health risks and contaminate food globally, but traditional detection methods face limitations in cost and complexity. To address this, a portable visual/electrochemical dual-mode biosensing platform was developed. This platform integrates a distance readout strategy and spatially resolved array electrodes, enabling the simultaneous detection of zearalenone (ZEN) and fumonisin B1 (FB1). The recognition of ZEN and FB1 by aptamers can trigger changes in impedance and voltage, which further affect the electrochemiluminescence (ECL) length. The concentrations of the two myco

Maize is frequently contaminated with aflatoxins (AFs) and fumonisins (FBs), posing a significant global food safety threat. Understanding how environmental factors regulate fungal toxigenesis under global warming is crucial. This study systematically investigated the in vitro stress responses of Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus parasiticus, and Fusarium verticillioides (strains isolated from contaminated maize) across broad gradients of temperature (15-40 °C) and water activity (0.93-0.995 aw). Phenotypically, primary and secondary metabolism exhibited striking divergence: A. flavus grew optim

Mycotoxigenic fungi and their toxins are a global concern, causing huge economic and health impacts in developing countries such as Ethiopia, where the mycotoxin control system is inadequate. This work aimed to review the occurrences of agriculturally essential fungi such as Aspergillus, Fusarium, and Penicillium and their major mycotoxins in Ethiopian food/feedstuffs. The incidents of crucial toxins, including aflatoxins (B1, B2, G1, G2, M1), fumonisins (B1, B2), zearalenone, deoxynivalenol, and ochratoxin A, were studied. The impacts of chronic aflatoxin exposure on liver cancer risks, syner

Fusarium verticillioides is both an endophyte and a pathogen of maize and is a health threat in many areas of the world because it can contaminate maize with fumonisins, a toxic secondary metabolite. We identified eight putative chitin synthase (CHS) genes in F. verticillioides genomic sequence, and phylogenetic evidence shows that they group into seven established CHS gene classes. We targeted two CHSs (CHS5 and CHS7) for deletion analysis and found that both are required for normal hyphal growth and maximal disease of maize seedlings and ears. CHS5 and CHS7 encode a putative class V and clas

Originally, the kwashiorkor is a pathology justified by the low consumption of proteins and high carbohydrates in weaned children. However, today, it can appear due to multifactorial causes, one of the hypotheses being the presence of aflatoxins in foods consumed by the child population and detected in biological fluids. The objective of this work is to scoping review the presence of aflatoxins in kwashiorkor, marasmus and marasmic-kwashiorkor from organs and biological samples in children. Results reflected that the presence of aflatoxins in kwashiorkor is greater compared to marasmic-kwashio

Mycotoxins are increasingly recognised as ecological mediators that act through a bidirectional gut-microbiota axis. Microbial metabolism governs toxin fate by driving detoxification, bioactivation, sequestration and deconjugation, whereas mycotoxin exposure reshapes microbial communities, disrupts epithelial barrier function and amplifies immune signalling. Across aflatoxin B1, ochratoxin A, fumonisin B1, deoxynivalenol and T-2 toxin, the microbiome emerges as both a determinant and a target of toxicity, with strain-level functional diversity influencing susceptibility, detoxification capacit

Immunoassay-based techniques are important on-site screening tools for the detection of mycotoxins in cereals. This study aims to evaluate the trueness, precision, repeatability and cross-reactivity of commercially available test strips, ELISA kits and UHPLC-MS/MS on analyzing zearalenone, ochratoxin A, deoxynivalenol, T-2 toxin and fumonisin B1. The results showed that false negative rate (25.7 %-37.4 %) of all tested mycotoxins by test strips was higher than the false positive rate (0 %-31.0 %). The repeatability of ELISA kits at the declared LOD dispersed from -85.7 % to +98.4 %. ELISA kits

Cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum, Lauraceae) is a food additive greatly used for its taste. However, recently this medicinal plant has been brought to attention due to its medical effects. Cinnamon has constituents such as cinnamaldehyde and cinnamic acid that offers some health benefits including antioxidant and free-radical scavenging properties, lowering of blood glucose, anti-cholesterolemic, analgesic, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, anti-yeast, anti-secretagogue, and anti-gastric ulcer effects. This review summarizes various in vitro and animal studies on the protective effects of cinna

Mycotoxins represent secondary metabolic products generated by fungal genera, including Aspergillus, Penicillium, and Fusarium, and are known to trigger hepatotoxic, nephrotoxic, carcinogenic, and immunotoxic effects in humans. While well-defined regulatory thresholds exist to manage dietary mycotoxin intake for major mycotoxins such as aflatoxins, ochratoxins, fumonisins, deoxynivalenol, and zearalenone, the health consequences stemming from inhalation among the agricultural and food-processing workforce are still poorly understood. Importantly, there are no health-based occupational exposure

Mycotoxins are fungal secondary metabolites with bioaccumulation levels leading to their carry-over into animal fluids, organs, and tissues. As a consequence, mycotoxin determination in biological samples from humans and animals has been reported worldwide. Since most mycotoxins show toxic effects at low concentrations and considering the extremely low levels present in biological samples, the application of reliable detection methods is required. This review summarizes the information regarding the studies involving mycotoxin determination in biological samples over the last 10 years. Relevan

Mycotoxin contamination represents one of the most pressing food safety challenges worldwide, with millions of tons of agricultural commodities affected annually. Conventional detection methods, while accurate, are labor-intensive, destructive, and unsuitable for large-scale screening. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) has emerged as a transformative non-destructive analytical technique capable of simultaneously capturing spatial and spectral information across hundreds of contiguous wavelengths. This review critically evaluates the current state of HSI technology for mycotoxin detection in food pro

Mycotoxins are fungal contaminants frequently detected in staple foods worldwide. While their toxic effects on growth and organ function are well recognized, their contribution to cardiometabolic disease programming during early life has received less attention. This review highlights the role of developmental exposure to major mycotoxins, including aflatoxins, ochratoxins, fumonisins, zearalenone, and deoxynivalenol, as a hidden driver of long-term cardiometabolic risk. Evidence indicates that exposure occurs during fetal life through placental transfer and after birth through breast milk, in
