Predictors of self-reported adherence to COVID-19 guidelines. A longitudinal observational study of 51,600 UK adults.

BACKGROUND: In the absence of a vaccine, governments have focused on social distancing, self-isolation, and increased hygiene procedures to reduce the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19). Compliance with these measures requires voluntary cooperation from citizens. Yet, compliance is not complete. Existing research on the predictors of compliance is almost exclusively based on cross-sectional data, raising the possibility of reverse causality and confounding. METHODS: Using data from the UCL COVID-19 Social Study, a large weekly online panel of UK adults from first three months of lockdown i

The European Hematology Association Roadmap for European Hematology Research: a consensus document.

The European Hematology Association (EHA) Roadmap for European Hematology Research highlights major achievements in diagnosis and treatment of blood disorders and identifies the greatest unmet clinical and scientific needs in those areas to enable better funded, more focused European hematology research. Initiated by the EHA, around 300 experts contributed to the consensus document, which will help European policy makers, research funders, research organizations, researchers, and patient groups make better informed decisions on hematology research. It also aims to raise public awareness of the

Social prescribing for socially isolated older adults in rural Japan: a qualitative case study.

INTRODUCTION: Social prescribing (SP) has not yet been officially introduced in Japan. This qualitative case study aimed to identify the challenges and facilitating factors in the implementation of SP among the socially isolated older population in Akita Prefecture, Japan, based on the perspectives of general practitioners (GP), link workers (LW), and patients. METHOD: We conducted a qualitative case study using semi-structured interviews and Braun & Clarke-informed thematic analysis in seven medical districts in Akita, Japan, with GP (n = 7), LW (n = 10), and older patients (n = 4). RESULTS

Opportunities and challenges for paediatricians requesting funded genomic tests for children.

Genomic diagnosis for children with childhood syndromes can inform treatment, management and reproductive planning. Shortages in the clinical genetics workforce mean that practices are changing, with paediatricians likely requesting initial genomic investigations and clinical genetics services reserved for particularly complex cases or post-test genetic counselling. In Australia, paediatricians can request funded genomic testing for patients, yet ordering rates are less than a quarter predicted. Using a theory-informed approach, we aimed to understand barriers and enablers to general paediatri

Addressing vaccine hesitancy and misinformation amidst Japan's self-amplifying mRNA COVID-19 vaccine rollout.

As of 1 October 2024, Japan implemented a revised coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination strategy, shifting from a fully publicly funded model to one where costs are partially or fully borne by recipients. This new annual program targets individuals aged 65 and above, and those aged 60-64 at higher risk of severe illness, requiring them to cover some vaccination expenses. For others, the vaccine remains voluntary and self-funded. Notably, this program includes the world's first self-amplifying mRNA COVID-19 vaccine, zapomeran (Kostaive®, Meiji Seika Pharma Co., Ltd.) approved on 28 No

Including mental health care in a model of European health system.

The management of a health system is a matter of economics and business administration because of the costs induced by goods and services delivered. Economics teaches us that the positive effects induced by competition in free markets cannot be expected in health care, which is a classic example of market failure from both demand and supply sides. The most sensible key concepts to refer for managing a health system are funding and provision. While the logical solution for the first variable is universal coverage through general taxation, the second one requires a deeper understanding. Integrat

Mpox vaccine and infection-driven human immune signatures.

BACKGROUND: Mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) outbreaks outside endemic areas peaked in July 2022, infecting > 85,000 people and raising concerns about our preparedness against this emerging viral pathogen. Licensed and approved for mpox, the JYNNEOS vaccine has fewer side effects than previous smallpox vaccines and demonstrated efficacy against mpox infection in humans. Comparing JYNNEOS vaccine- and mpox-induced immunity is imperative to evaluate JYNNEOS' immunogenicity and inform vaccine administration and design. METHODS: We examined the polyclonal serum (ELISA) and single B cell (heavy

Review of claustrophobia incidence in MRI: A service evaluation of current rates across a multi-centre service.

INTRODUCTION: Magnetic Resonance Imaging remains an anxious experience for many, often exhibiting as fear of enclosed spaces. A useful metric to assess its prevalence and impact in practice is premature termination due to claustrophobia. Incidence varies and depends on many factors such as the physical nature of the imaging equipment and examination being undertaken, as well as the patient themselves. METHODS: Scan appointment data from between April 2019-March 2021 was extracted and reviewed. Analysis included the type of scanner used, patient age, sex, examination area, funding source, atte

Case series of six patients diagnosed and managed for idiopathic intracranial hypertension at a tertiary institution eye centre.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH) occurs secondary to raised intracranial pressure (ICP) of unknown etiology and is diagnosed when all other causes of raised ICP have been excluded. It can leave devastating sequelae such as permanent visual loss, hence the need for timely diagnosis and treatment. Anecdotally, one or two cases of idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) previously presented at the Eye Centre, KBTH yearly. However, six cases were seen within a 6-month period, prompting the need to study the clinical features of IIH in this population. OBJECTIVE: We aim to

Social media activism and women's health: Endometriosis awareness and support.

OBJECTIVE: While endometriosis is estimated to affect 1 in 10 women globally, awareness of the disease as well as research and funding to fight the disease remains lacking as compared with other chronic diseases. This study examines how social media users utilized Instagram to raise awareness of and mobilize activism around endometriosis by analyzing prominent topics, word associations, and feminism themes in endometriosis-tagged posts on Instagram. METHODS: We used a mixed-method approach of combining computational analyses (topic modeling and word association) and human coding (qualitative

[Problems and outcome in very low birth weight infants, with three cases of babies under 700 grams].

Recent advances in neonatal medicine made reality the survival of newborn babies of extremely low weight and gestational age. This often provokes ethical problems in relation to high death rate, morbidity and neuro-developmental seguels. On the other hand it is usually impossible at birth to predict the presence and severity of future problems. We present the cases of three babies, where in spite of the most unfavourable factors connected to mother's condition, foetus and newborn, three healthy children were raised up. Their characteristics at birth are: 650 g--30 gestational weeks; 560 g--29

"All of these things interact, that's why it's such a wicked problem": Stakeholders' perspectives of what hinders low back pain care in Australia and how to improve it.

BACKGROUND: Low-quality care for low back pain (LBP) is pervasive in Australia. Drivers of low-quality care have been identified elsewhere and include misconceptions about LBP, vested interests and limited funding for evidence-based interventions. Yet, the literature that identified such drivers is not specific to the Australian context, and therefore, it is likely to represent only part of the local problem. This study aimed to determine where the most influential drivers of LBP care are in the Australian healthcare system and what could be done to address them. METHODS: Clinical leaders fro

[Conflicts of interest in scientific publications and possible consequences : A critical analysis using the example of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)].

Technological advancements in endourology rely on close collaboration between medical expertise and industrial research. While this symbiosis is essential for medical progress, it also raises potential conflicts of interest. Using the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) as an example, this study examines various mechanisms through which industry influences scientific evidence. These include selective study design, industry-sponsored educational events, and direct financial ties between industry and medical professionals. Leptospirosis, melioidosis, and rickettsioses in the vicious circle of neglect.

The global priorities in the field of infectious diseases are constantly changing. While emerging viral infections have regularly dominated public health attention, which has only intensified after the COVID-19 pandemic, numerous bacterial diseases have previously caused, and continue to cause, significant morbidity and mortality-deserving equal attention. Three potentially life-threatening endemic bacterial diseases (leptospirosis, melioidosis, and rickettsioses) are a huge public health concern especially in low- and middle-income countries. Despite their continued threat, these diseases do

The First 40 Years of AIDS: Promising Programs, Limited Success.

HIV-prevention program planning, implementation, and evaluation began in the United States shortly after reports of a mysterious, apparently acquired, immune deficiency syndrome appeared in summer 1981. In San Francisco, New York City, and elsewhere, members of LGBT communities responded by providing accurate information, giving support, and raising money. During the first decade of the AIDS pandemic (1981-1990), social and behavioral scientists contributed by designing theory-based and practical interventions, combining interventions into programs, and measuring impact on behavior change and

Characteristics of admissions for primary stimulant dependence during 2001.

The production and consumption of synthetic stimulants has been increasing in recent years accompanied by an increase in the number of individuals seeking treatment for synthetic stimulant "abuse."1 The misuse of stimulants is occurring at younger ages and primarily in the context of polysubstance use. This article examines the characteristics of admissions entering treatment centers that received some form of public funding in 2001 as compiled in the Treatment Episodes Data Set produced by the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration, Office of Applied Studies. It compares those

The Ethics of Growth-Promoting Pharmaceuticals for Achondroplasia.

In 2021, vosoritide became the first pharmaceutical approved to treat the pathophysiology of achondroplastic dwarfism. It has generated significant ethical debate. Proponents emphasize its potential to improve quality of life and functional independence, whereas critics raise concerns about pathologizing human variation, eroding cultural identity, and limiting children's autonomy. The drug has an extremely high cost (approximately $300,000 USD per year per patient) and is non-lifesaving, further provoking questions of distributive justice and public funding. This paper examines the key ethical

The Mycetoma Research Center, University of Khartoum, Sudan's experience in community engagement initiatives spans 3 decades.

Mycetoma profoundly affects marginalised communities, especially in impoverished and remote areas with limited access to healthcare. This chronic and debilitating inflammatory disease highlights the typical issues of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), such as insufficient attention, funding, and resources, which perpetuate neglect and suffering. Patients often delay seeking medical help, leading to advanced disease stages, severe complications, and lasting disabilities. The lack of medical infrastructure and skilled healthcare professionals worsens the situation, causing delays in diagnosis a

The economic impact of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: a systematic review.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a devastating neurological disease for which there is no cure, and the associated economic burden is considerable. In this review, the authors summarize the existing body of literature pertaining to the costs associated with ALS to demonstrate the scale and scope of the economic burden of this paralyzing disease. Twelve studies from eight countries published between January 2001 and January 2015 met the inclusion criteria and were included in this review. Direct and indirect costs varied significantly across countries. Standardized to the 2015 US$, the an

Does Management Really Matter? And If so, to Who?: Comment on "Management Matters: A Leverage Point for Health Systems Strengthening in Global Health".

The editorial is commendable and I agree with many of the points raised. Management is an important aspect of health system strengthening which is often overlooked. In order to build the capacity of management, we need to consider other factors such as, the environment within which managers work, their numbers, support systems and distribution. Effective leadership is an issue which cannot be overemphasized as part of management capacity in resource deprived settings as difficult settings require leadership skills in order to achieve managerial success. A primary issue of importance highlighte
