Fusarium Head Blight (FHB), caused by multiple species of Fusarium in small grain cereals, is a significant and long-standing problem anywhere in the world. Knowing regional Fusarium spp. present on non-symptomatic grains and their potential for mycotoxin production is of concern for identifying novel actions for FHB and mycotoxin management, such as treatments with essential oils. Analyzing the mycotoxin content of grains from non-symptomatic ears of different wheat varieties cultivated in Tunisia, we isolated Fusaria specimens identified as F. culmorum and F. acuminatum using analysis of the

Fungal keratitis, an infective disease of the cornea, represents a serious diagnostic and therapeutic problem that, if not recognized on time, could lead to irreversible eye damage. Herein we report a case of fungal keratitis due to Fusarium spp. infection. The 60-year-old man was admitted to our clinic due to an atraumatic acute onset of the disease, with a decrease in the visual acuity, photophobia, redness, and severe pain in the right eye. Clinical observation revealed an ulcer that affected 1/3 of the cornea and a hypopion in the anterior chamber. After the first results of microbiologica

BACKGROUND: Fusarium species are the fungal pathogens most commonly responsible for the mycotic keratitis, which are resistant to the majority of currently available antifungal agents. The present study was designed to assess the efficacy of a combination of low doses chlorhexidine with two other commonly used drugs (voriconazole and natamycin) to treat Fusarium infections.
RESULTS: We utilized combinations of chlorhexidine and natamycin or voriconazole against 20 clinical Fusarium strains in vitro using a checkerboard-based microdilution strategy. In order to more fully understand the synerg

In disease-suppressive soils, microbiota protect plants from root infections. Bacterial members of this microbiota have been shown to produce specific molecules that mediate this phenotype. To date, however, studies have focused on individual suppressive soils and the degree of natural variability of soil suppressiveness remains unclear. Here, we screened a large collection of field soils for suppressiveness to Fusarium culmorum using wheat (Triticum aestivum) as a model host plant. A high variation of disease suppressiveness was observed, with 14% showing a clear suppressive phenotype. The mi

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: With the rising number of contact lens users, there has been observed an increasing number of patients admitted to ophthalmology wards with severe keratitis, including those of fungal etiology. One of the most devastating specimens is Fusarium spp. If not diagnosed and treated from the onset of the symptoms, it can lead to severe visual loss, or even blindness.
CASE REPORT: This a retrospective case report of a 36-year-old pregnant female diagnosed with Fusarium keratitis, not responding to topical treatment. The problem is discussed and includes the most relevant

The cyanoacrylate compound phenamacril (also known as JS399-19) is a recently identified fungicide that exerts its antifungal effect on susceptible Fusarium species by inhibiting the ATPase activity of their myosin class I motor domains. Although much is known about the antifungal spectrum of phenamacril, the exact mechanism behind the phenamacril-mediated inhibition remains to be resolved. Here, we describe the characterization of the effect of phenamacril on purified myosin motor constructs from the model plant pathogen and phenamacril-susceptible species Fusarium graminearum, phenamacril-re

PURPOSE: To report a difficult-to-identify case of keratitis due to Fusarium solani, diagnosed with the help of exhaustive gene analysis.
CASE: A 47-year-old woman attended our hospital with a refractory corneal ulcer associated with contact lens wear in her left eye that had appeared two weeks earlier. On her initial visit, slit lamp examination revealed a small double-ringed irregular hyphate ulcer in the center of the cornea, which had no epithelial defect, suggesting fungal infection. Microscopic visualization and culture of corneal scrapings were performed repeatedly, but the results wer

Fusarium species are a known cause of ocular infection that can produce local and/or systemic invasive fusariosis. Fusarium ocular infection can evolve to keratitis, endophthalmitis and, in extreme cases, ocular perforation. We report, for the first time in children, the case of a 5 year old girl diagnosed with toxic epidermal necrolysis who developed Fusarium ocular infection requiring ocular enucleation.

Fusarium graminearum causes Fusarium head blight, an important disease of wheat. F. graminearum can also cause disease in Arabidopsis thaliana. Here, we show that the Arabidopsis LOX1 and LOX5 genes, which encode 9-lipoxygenases (9-LOXs), are targeted during this interaction to facilitate infection. LOX1 and LOX5 expression were upregulated in F. graminearum-inoculated plants and loss of LOX1 or LOX5 function resulted in enhanced disease resistance in the corresponding mutant plants. The enhanced resistance to F. graminearum infection in the lox1 and lox5 mutants was accompanied by more robust

Phosphorylation and dephosphorylation events were initiated in wheat scab resistance. The putative FHB-responsive phosphoproteins are mainly involved in three functional groups and contain at least one tyrosine, serine, or threonine phosphorylation site. Fusarium head blight (FHB), caused by Fusarium graminearum, is a severe disease in wheat. Protein phosphorylation plays an important role in plant-pathogen interactions, however, a global analysis of protein phosphorylation in response to FHB infection remains to be explored. To study the effect of FHB on the phosphorylation state of wheat pro

PURPOSE: A retrospective statistical analysis of the Fusarium keratitis epidemic of 2004-2006 was performed.
METHODS: Poisson and binomial probability distributions were performed in conjunction with statistical data reported from Singapore's Fusarium keratitis outbreak in order to identify the earliest theoretical point in time that this outbreak and its cause could have been recognized.
RESULTS: The outbreak in Singapore could, theoretically, have been recognized after only three months (three cases), P = 0.0067. The cause of the Singapore outbreak could, theoretically, have been determine

Fusarium species, or saprophytic molds, are important plant pathogens and recognized as agents of human mycotic infections. Frequently superficial, deep-tissue involvement, and dissemination occurs in immunocompromised hosts with hematologic malignancies, aplastic anemia, and chemotherapy treatment. Presented in this work is a burn patient with a fatal disseminated infection in addition to a review of the literature. A 40-year-old white male acquired a 73% grease scald injury at work. His hospital course was interspersed with multiple episodes of Flavobacterium, Fusarium, Candida, Proteus, Ent

We report here a case of localized oral Fusarium infection in an AIDS patient who developed an ulceration in the soft palate. Fusarium solani was identified by histopathology and culture. We believe this to be the second reported case of oral Fusarium infection in a patient with haematological malignancy and the first reported association of oral Fusarium infection with AIDS.

Duodenitis/proximal jejunitis syndrome (DPJ) is a small intestinal disease of horses that is associated with depression and copious gastric reflux. Since an infectious cause for DPJ remains unsubstantiated, these studies were designed to investigate the possible role of Fusarium moniliforme toxins in this disease. Fusarium moniliforme was isolated by culturing 2 samples of feed that had been fed to horses with clinical signs of DPJ. These isolates (AU 2/3) were subsequently grown concurrently on autoclaved corn and their toxicity evaluated in a feeding trial utilizing horses. Isolates of F mon

Fusarium moniliforme was demonstrated to be the etiologic agent in an Italian case of eumycotic mycetoma. The fungus produced white granules, which measured 80 X 133 by 212 X 478 microns. Their edges were entire or lobed and were surrounded by an eosinophilic homogeneous material. The hyphae comprising the granules were not embedded in cement. The etiologic agent, first considered to be an Acremonium species, was restudied and identified as F. moniliforme on the basis that it not only produced chains of microconidia but also curved, multi-septate macroconidia typical of the genus Fusarium.

Signs and lesions characteristic of equine leucoencephalomalacia were produced in one of two donkeys given corn cultured with Fusarium moniliforme Sheldon. Gross and histopathologic lesions of the cerebrum included an extensive necrotic cavitation within one cerebral hemisphere, disruption and rarefication of the subcortical white matter, prominent perivascular hemorrhage, and some mononuclear cell perivascular cuffing. Another donkey and three rabbits fed the cultured corn did not develop characteristic signs or lesions of the toxicosis. Chick bioassay studies indicated that the cultured corn
