Identification of linear B cell epitopes on the leukotoxin protein of Fusobacterium necrophorum.

OBJECTIVE: Fusobacterium necrophorum can cause Lemierre's syndrome in humans and a range of illnesses, including foot rot and liver abscesses, in animals. The main virulence factor released by F. necrophorum is leukotoxin, which has been shown to have a strong correlation with the severity of the disease. Leukotoxin is commonly employed as the key antigen in the formulation of subunit vaccines. Therefore, identification of the B-cell epitope of F. necrophorum leukotoxin is necessary. METHODS: In this research, we utilized lymphocyte hybridoma technology to develop a monoclonal antibody (mAb),

Fusobacterium necrophorum septic arthritis of the hip: A case-report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Fusobacterium necrophorum is a rare but significant cause of septic arthritis, typically following oropharyngeal infections in adolescents. This anaerobic pathogen, commonly associated with Lemierre's syndrome, can lead to joint infections, posing risks for severe morbidity if diagnosis and treatment are delayed. Awareness and timely intervention are essential for preventing long-term joint damage. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 19-year-old woman who developed high fever and acute right hip pain one week after a sore throat. Imaging revealed septic arthritis, with F. necro

Elucidating the genotoxicity of Fusobacterium nucleatum-secreted mutagens in colorectal cancer carcinogenesis.

BACKGROUND: Fusobacterium nucleatum (F. nucleatum) is one of the key tumorigenic bacteria in colorectal cancer (CRC), yet how F. nucleatum is involved in colorectal cancer carcinogenesis remains unknown. RESULTS: In the present study, we carried out PathSeq analysis on RNA sequencing data from the 430 primary colon adenocarcinomas in TCGA database to assess the relationship between patients' survival and F. nucleatum abundance. Among patients with cecum and ascending colon tumors, we found that F. nucleatum transcriptome abundance is positively correlated with mutation load. We further demons

Bilateral parapneumonic empyema caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum infection in a healthy individual.

Pulmonary infection caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum, an obligate anaerobic gram-negative bacterium, most commonly occurs as a part of Lemierre's syndrome, i.e., pharyngotonsillitis complicated by septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein and secondary lung abscesses. A 51-year-old previously healthy man was admitted to our hospital with pleuritic right-sided chest pain. No sore throat, dysphagia, or neck pain was observed. Chest radiography and computed tomography (CT) revealed massive right pleural effusion and bilateral bronchopneumonia. Right thoracic drainage yielded purulen

Fusobacterium nucleatum bacteremia with pneumopathy in a patient receiving eculizumab: A case report.

Fusobacterium nucleatum is a common oral commensal bacterium capable of severe invasive infections. We report a case of a diffuse bilateral pneumopathy with F. nucleatum-positive blood culture successfully treated by common antibiotics in a patient receiving eculizumab for a drug-induced thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA). It is the first described case of a severe F. nucleatum-associated infection in a patient undergoing terminal complement inhibitor therapy. We suggest providing preventive dental care before eculizumab initiation.

Association of Fusobacterium nucleatum with clinical and molecular features in colorectal serrated pathway.

Human gut microbiota is being increasingly recognized as a player in colorectal cancers (CRCs). Evidence suggests that Fusobacterium nucleatum (F. nucleatum) may contribute to disease progression and is associated with CpG island methylator phenotype (CIMP) and microsatellite instability (MSI) in CRCs; however, to date, there are no reports about the relationship between F. nucleatum and molecular features in the early stage of colorectal tumorigenesis. Therefore, we investigated the presence of F. nucleatum in premalignant colorectal lesions. In total, 465 premalignant lesions (343 serrated l

Clinical and biochemical characteristics of patients with Fusobacterium necrophorum-positive acute tonsillitis.

Fusobacterium necrophorum (FN) is the predominant pathogen in peritonsillar abscesses, which is a relatively frequent complication of acute tonsillitis. The study aimed to explore if FN is a significant pathogen in acute tonsillitis, examine the prevalence of FN in acute tonsillitis patients, and describe the clinical and biochemical characteristics of FN-positive patients. A 6-month prospective study was conducted in a Danish general practice with eight physicians. One hundred acute tonsillitis patients and 100 healthy controls aged 15-40 years were included in the study. The prevalence of FN

[Brain abscess due to Fusobacterium necrophorum in a patient with convulsion and no signs of meningitis].

Here, we report brain abscess due to Fusobacterium necrophorum (F. necrophorum) in a 78-year-old healthy man. He developed convulsion and did not have any signs of meningitis. Although the brain magnetic resonance imaging findings of the left occipital lobe were typical of a brain abscess, his cerebrospinal fluid examination revealed only slight pleocytosis and mild increase in protein levels. Thus, it was difficult to rule out the possibility of metastatic brain tumor; the patient's condition was provisionally diagnosed as symptomatic epilepsy secondary to brain abscess. His convulsion disapp

Lemierre syndrome and nosocomial transmission of Fusobacterium necrophorum from patient to physician.

BACKGROUND: Human-to-human transmission of Fusobacterium necrophorum has not been described before. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 15-year-old girl with Lemierre Syndrome and possible nosocomial transmission of F. necrophorum to her treating physician in hospital. CONCLUSION: Early diagnosis and treatment of anaerobic pharyngitis is critical to prevent Lemierre Syndrome. Respiratory precautions should be recommended to medical staff caring for patients with suspected Lemierre Syndrome to prevent nosocomial transmission.

Immune response to Fusobacterium nucleatum and Prevotella intermedia in patients with infectious mononucleosis.

The role of four oral flora organisms (Fusobacterium nucleatum, Prevotella intermedia, Porphyromonas gingivalis and Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans) was investigated in 22 patients with infectious mononucleosis. Immunoglobulin-G class antibody titres to these organisms were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Serum levels in the patients were determined at day 1 and 42-56 days later. Significantly higher antibody levels to F. nucleatum and Pr. intermedia were found in the second serum sample of patients as compared to their first sample. The elevated antibody levels to F. nucle

Fusobacterium nucleatum mediated crosstalk drives cisplatin resistance in head and neck cancer.

Cisplatin remains a cornerstone of head and neck cancer (HNC) treatment, yet resistance frequently undermines therapeutic efficacy. Emerging evidence implicates Fusobacterium nucleatum, enriched in the tumour microbiome, in promoting chemoresistance via molecular and microenvironmental mechanisms. This review synthesises evidence from PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science (January 2015-September 2025) examining F. nucleatum's contribution to cisplatin resistance in HNC. Cisplatin resistance involves tumour-intrinsic pathways, such as nucleotide excision repair, homologous recombination, and ATP7B

Cross-feeding interactions between Fusobacterium nucleatum and the glycan forager Segatella oris.

Fusobacterium nucleatum is a common member of the oral microbiota frequently associated with extra-oral infections and diverse polymicrobial environments, including chronic airway diseases and colorectal tumors. Yet, its interactions with co-colonizing microbiota remain poorly defined. Here, we investigate cross-feeding interspecies dynamics between F. nucleatum and Segatella oris, a glycan-foraging anaerobe enriched in the airways, oral cavity, and gastrointestinal tumors. Using broth cultures, cell-free supernatants, and co-culture on primary human airway epithelial cells, we identify microb

Fusobacterium nucleatum Enhances Intestinal Adaptation of Vibrio cholerae via Interspecies Biofilm Formation.

Biofilm formation represents a key survival strategy employed by Vibrio cholerae to adapt to the complex intestinal environment of the host. While most previous studies on V. cholerae biofilms have focused on genetic regulation and monospecies cultures, its ability to form dual-species biofilms with other intestinal pathogens is still poorly understood. In this study, using samples from both cholera patients and healthy individuals, Fusobacterium nucleatum was identified as a bacterium capable of co-aggregating with V. cholerae. Untargeted metabolomic analysis revealed that F. nucleatum-derive
