Urban-rural structuring of mosquito assemblages in Moyen-Ogooué, Gabon reveals widespread dominance of Aedes albopictus.

Mosquito-borne arboviruses such as dengue, chikungunya, Zika, yellow fever, West Nile and Rift Valley fever circulate widely in Central Africa, yet vector ecology, especially outside major cities, remains poorly characterized. Between March 2023 and January 2025, we conducted bimonthly entomological surveys to investigate the ecological patterns of mosquito communities across an urban (Lambaréné), peri-urban and rural gradient in Moyen-Ogooué province, central Gabon. Larvae were sampled with WHO ovitraps, and adult mosquitoes were collected using light traps and Prokopack aspirators. In total,

Schistosoma haematobium infection morbidity, praziquantel effectiveness and reinfection rate among children and young adults in Gabon.

BACKGROUND: Sub-Saharan Africa carries most of the global burden of schistosomiasis. To optimize disease control and reduce morbidity, precise data are needed for control measures adapted to the local epidemiological situation. The objective of this study is to provide baseline information on schistosomiasis dynamics, including praziquantel (PZQ) treatment outcome in children and young adults living in the vicinity of Lambaréné, Gabon. METHODS: Eligible volunteers were included into a prospective longitudinal study. Urine filtration technique was used to detect eggs in urine for schistosomias

[Pulmonary bilharziosis due to Schistosoma haematobium: pitfalls of species diagnosis. A case report from Libreville, Gabon].

The purpose of this report is to describe a case of pulmonary schistosomiasis treated at la Fondation Jeanne Ebori in Libreville, Gabon. This case is exceptional due to the rarity of the disease and the schistosomiasis agent involved. The patient was a 47-year-old woman who presented with recurrent right-sided pneumonia 6 months after initial hospitalization and nonspecific antimicrobial therapy. Her general status was altered by hyperthermia, right chest pain, and repetitive bouts of hemoptysia. Because etiological diagnosis could not be achieved and clinical condition was deteriorating, the

Genomic Signatures of Microgeographic Adaptation in Anopheles coluzzii Across Urban, Rural, and Forested Environments in Gabon.

Species distributed across heterogeneous environments often evolve locally adapted populations, but understanding how these persist in the presence of homogenizing gene flow remains puzzling. In Gabon, Anopheles coluzzii, a major African malaria mosquito, is found in various ecological settings, including urban areas, remote rural villages, and forested environments away from any human presence. This study investigates the genomic signatures of local adaptation in populations from distinct environments including the urban area of Libreville, and two proximate sites 10 km apart in the La Lopé N

Status of pfcrt and pfmdr1 mutations in Plasmodium falciparum isolates in Gabon in 2019 after chloroquine withdrawal.

Chloroquine (CQ) resistance has long contributed to antimalarial treatment failure. Despite the implementation of artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) in Gabon, continued surveillance of antimalarial drug resistance markers remains essential for malaria control and elimination. This study aimed to monitor molecular markers of antimalarial drug resistance, specifically the Plasmodium falciparum chloroquine resistance transporter (pfcrt) and P. falciparum multidrug resistance 1 (pfmdr1), in P. falciparum clinical isolates from Libreville, nearly two decades after CQ withdrawal. Sociodemographics, Clinical Factors, and Biological Factors Associated with Loiasis in Endemic Onchocerciasis Areas in Southern Gabon.

To implement the appropriate strategies for scale-up interventions to eliminate onchocerciasis without severe adverse events, clinical and biological factors associated with loiasis were analyzed in onchocerciasis-endemic areas. Blood was collected from volunteers after examination by a physician. Detection of microfilariae and measurement of Ov16 IgG4 were performed using direct microscopic examination of blood and onchocerciasis rapid test detection, respectively. Areas with sporadic, hypoendemic, and hyperendemic onchocerciasis endemicity were found. Participants with microfilaremia were co

Performance of Field's Stain Compared with Conventional Giemsa Stain for the Rapid Detection of Blood Microfilariae in Gabon.

Filarial infections caused by Loa loa and Mansonella perstans are a considerable public health burden in rural regions of Central Africa. Rapid diagnostic tools for the detection of microfilariae in the blood are needed. Field's stain is a rapid staining technique for microscopic slides originally established for malaria diagnostics. It requires less than 1 minute of staining compared with conventional staining protocols requiring at least 15 to 20 minutes for staining and could thus significantly accelerate diagnostics for human filariasis. Here we evaluated Field's stain as a rapid staining

Serological Evidence for the Circulation of Rift Valley Fever Virus in Domestic Small Ruminants in Southern Gabon.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a zoonotic disease, which caused several epidemics in humans in many countries of Africa. Using an inhibition enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), real-time reverse transcription PCR, and nested one-step reverse transcription PCR, we conducted a cross-sectional study in populations of sheep and goats from the Mongo County in 2014 to determine the circulation of the Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) in small ruminants from this area. From a total of 201 small ruminants (95 sheep and 106 goats), the overall IgG seroprevalence against the RVFV was 6.47% (13/201). No

Inventory of potential vectors of trypanosoma and infection rate of the Tsetse fly in the National Park of Ivindo, Gabon.

BACKGROUND: Trypanosoma's vectors distribution is poorly investigated in Gabon, where Trypanosomiasis historical foci exist. Thus, an active detection of Trypanosoma sp transmission needs to be assessed. OBJECTIVES: The present study aims to identify potential vectors of Trypanosoma sp and to evaluate the infection rate of the Tsetse fly in an area of Gabon. METHODS: An entomological survey was conducted in the National Park of Ivindo in May 2012 using Vavoua traps. All captured insects were identified. [Family form of isolated left ventricular noncompaction; case of a mother and her son observed in Gabon].

We describe a case report of a young Gabonese lady who presented an acute pulmonary oedema and we suspected a paripartum cardiomyopathy. Subsequent investigations showed isolated left ventricular noncompaction. A few months later, the same disease was disclosed at her 9 year-old son who presented a cardiac insufficiency. Therefore, we suspect a family form of left ventricular noncompaction. And it is the first description in subsaharan Africa. The hereditary character of this new form of cardiomyopathy linked to a genetic mutation on the X chromosome is well known. This disease is associated w

[Glossina feeding habits and diversity of species of trypanosomes in an active focus of human African trypanosomiasis in Gabon].

Feeding host is an important factor upon which depend the Glossina infection rate and the proportion of different species of trypanosome. Glossina feed both upon animals and humans. In order to identify species of trypanosomes present in the Komo-Mondah focus and to verify whether there is any relationship between the prevalence of sleeping sickness and the feeding habits of Glossina, we have carried out an entomological survey in this focus of Gabon. Flies were dissected and organs were analysed by PCR, while the origin of blood meals was determined by ELISA. Three species of trypanosomes wer

In vitro activity of tigecycline in Plasmodium falciparum culture-adapted strains and clinical isolates from Gabon.

Emerging drug resistance in Plasmodium falciparum and its rapid spread in endemic countries have made the quest for new antimalarials a research priority. Tetracycline and its derivatives are well-established compounds for combination with faster-acting drugs in the current practice of malaria treatment. Tigecycline is the first marketed derivative of a new class of tetracycline antibiotics. Its altered structure leads to enhanced activity against bacteria and may also be associated with improved antimalarial activity. Using the histidine-rich protein 2 (HRP2) drug sensitivity assay, we determ

Association of haptoglobin levels with age, parasite density, and haptoglobin genotype in a malaria-endemic area of Gabon.

Haptoglobin (Hp) levels were investigated in relation to host genotype in a malaria-endemic area in Gabon. A cross-sectional study of 1-12-year-old children was conducted in the rainy season, a period of high malaria transmission, to examine this relationship. Variables that influenced Hp levels were Hp genotype, location, and age interacting with parasite density. At low parasite densities, there was a negative correlation between Hp levels and age. At higher densities, there was a positive correlation with age. This suggests that in the presence of greater parasite-induced hemolysis, older c

High variability of HTLV-I in a remote population of Gabon as compared to that of a similar population of French Guiana.

An anomalous high frequency of ATL was observed in a remote 'noir maroons' village of French Guiana. Since it is not clear if HTLV-I is responsible for different frequencies of disease in different geographical areas, we undertook a comparison of the population with a similar one located in Gabon. We found a much higher degree of gp46 surface envelope glycoprotein sequence conservation in the Guianese village than in the Gabonese one.

IgG subclass recognition of Loa loa antigens and their correlation with clinical status in individuals from Gabon.

In endemic areas for Loa loa, a significant percentage of actively infected individuals have no circulating microfilariae, an observation which implies the existence of a stage-specific immune response. In an attempt to define the immunological basis of the amicrofilaraemic state, the reactivity of antigens from adult, microfilariae and infective larvae of L. loa was examined by Western blotting with individual serum samples from four clinically defined groups (high microfilaraemic, low microfilaraemic, amicrofilaraemic and endemic controls) using IgG subclass-specific reagents and IgE. Breast and cervical cancer screening in a semi-urban African setting: evidence from Franceville, Gabon (2015-2021).

BACKGROUND: Breast and cervical cancers are among the most frequent malignancies in women worldwide and represent a growing public health concern in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). In Gabon, national screening programs have been established, but their effectiveness remains poorly documented, particularly outside the capital city, Libreville. This study, therefore, aimed to describe the screening outcomes and associated factors for breast abnormalities and suspected cervical lesions at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Amissa Bongo (CHUAB) in Franceville, Gabon.
