The application of Signalling Theory to health-related trust problems: The example of herbal clinics in Ghana and Tanzania.

In contexts where healthcare regulation is weak and levels of uncertainty high, how do patients decide whom and what to trust? In this paper, we explore the potential for using Signalling Theory (ST, a form of Behavioural Game Theory) to investigate health-related trust problems under conditions of uncertainty, using the empirical example of 'herbal clinics' in Ghana and Tanzania. Qualitative, ethnographic fieldwork was conducted over an eight-month period (2015-2016) in eight herbal clinics in Ghana and ten in Tanzania, including semi-structured interviews with herbalists (N = 18) and patient

Biomarkers of Internet Gaming Disorder-A Narrative Review.

Since game mechanics and their visual aspects have become more and more addictive, there is concern about the growing prevalence of Internet gaming disorder (IGD). In the current narrative review, we searched PubMed and Google Scholar databases for the keywords "igd biomarker gaming" and terms related to biomarker modalities. The biomarkers we found are grouped into several categories based on a measurement method and are discussed in the light of theoretical addiction models (tripartite neurocognitive model, I-PACE). Both theories point to gaming-related problems with salience and inhibition.

Zoned in or zoned out? Investigating immersion in slot machine gambling using mobile eye-tracking.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Immersion during slot machine gambling has been linked to disordered gambling. Current conceptualizations of immersion (namely dissociation, flow and the machine zone) make contrasting predictions as to whether gamblers are captivated by the game per se ('zoned in') or motivated by the escape that immersion provides ('zoned out'). We examined whether selected eye-movement metrics can distinguish between these predictions. DESIGN AND SETTING: Pre-registered, correlational analysis in a laboratory setting. Participants gambled on a genuine slot machine for 20 minutes while

Decoding fairness motivations from multivariate brain activity patterns.

A preference for fairness may originate from prosocial or strategic motivations: we may wish to improve others' well-being or avoid the repercussions of selfish behavior. Here, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging to identify neural patterns that dissociate these two motivations. Participants played both the ultimatum and dictator game (UG-DG) as proposers. Because responders can reject the offer in the UG, but not the DG, offers and neural patterns between the games should differ for strategic players but not prosocial players. Using multivariate pattern analysis, we found that the d

Flow and Grit by Design: Exploring Gamification in Facilitating Adherence to Swallowing Therapy.

PURPOSE: Delivery of swallowing therapy is faced with challenges regarding access to in-clinic services and adherence to prescribed home programs. Mobile health (mHealth) technologies are being developed at a rapid pace to address these difficulties. Whereas some benefits to using these modern tools for therapy are obvious (e.g., electronic reminders), other advantages are not as well understood. One example is the potential for mHealth devices and apps to enhance adherence to treatment regimens. METHOD: This article introduces a number of psychological concepts that relate to adherence and t

Develop a personalised serious game applet for smoking cessation: protocol for enterprise-based cluster randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco use causes approximately 8 million deaths worldwide each year. Against the backdrop of a rapidly expanding game market, there is growing potential to develop tailored gaming interventions for smoking cessation. This study protocol describes the development of a personalised Serious Game Applet based on an integrated TTM-PMT-HAPA framework (Transtheoretical Model, Protection Motivation Theory, Health Action Process Approach) and evaluates its effectiveness compared with conventionalShort Messaging Service (SMS) -based smoking cessation interventions. METHODS AND ANALYSIS:

New Game-Theoretical Approach to Marketing Cooperatives in Fisheries.

While most game-theoretical models in fisheries deal with the conflict of exploitation of the same resource, unlike these models, the present paper is dedicated to marketing conflicts, always accounting for the underlying population dynamics. In the context of marketing cooperatives in fisheries, three models are combined: the classical fishing effort model based on logistic population dynamics, a game-theoretical model of the conflict between a marketing cooperative and its members, and a Cournot-type oligopoly market model. The latter, in particular, means that the market price is determined

Cooperation in the face of crisis: effect of demographic noise in collective-risk social dilemmas.

In deciding whether to contribute to a public good, people often face a social dilemma known as the tragedy of the commons: either bear the cost of promoting the collective welfare, or free-ride on the efforts of others. Here, we study the dynamics of cooperation in the context of the threshold public goods games, in which groups must reach a cumulative target contribution to prevent a potential disaster, such as an environmental crisis or social unrest, that could result in the loss of all private wealth. The catch is that the crisis may never materialize, and the investment in the public goo

The competitive advantage of institutional reward.

Sustaining cooperation among unrelated individuals is a fundamental challenge in biology and the social sciences. In human society, this problem can be solved by establishing incentive institutions that reward cooperators and punish free-riders. Most of the previous studies have focused on which incentives promote cooperation best. However, a higher cooperation level does not always imply higher group fitness, and only incentives that lead to higher fitness can survive in social evolution. In this paper, we compare the efficiencies of three types of institutional incentives, namely, reward, pu

When agreement-accepting free-riders are a necessary evil for the evolution of cooperation.

Agreements and commitments have provided a novel mechanism to promote cooperation in social dilemmas in both one-shot and repeated games. Individuals requesting others to commit to cooperate (proposers) incur a cost, while their co-players are not necessarily required to pay any, allowing them to free-ride on the proposal investment cost (acceptors). Although there is a clear complementarity in these behaviours, no dynamic evidence is currently available that proves that they coexist in different forms of commitment creation. Using a stochastic evolutionary model allowing for mixed population

The evolution of antisocial punishment in optional public goods games.

Cooperation, where one individual incurs a cost to help another, is a fundamental building block of the natural world and human society. It has been suggested that costly punishment can promote the evolution of cooperation, with the threat of punishment deterring free-riders. Recent experiments, however, have revealed the existence of 'antisocial' punishment, where non-cooperators punish cooperators. While various theoretical models find that punishment can promote the evolution of cooperation, these models a priori exclude the possibility of antisocial punishment. Here we extend the standard

Evolutionary establishment of moral and double moral standards through spatial interactions.

Situations where individuals have to contribute to joint efforts or share scarce resources are ubiquitous. Yet, without proper mechanisms to ensure cooperation, the evolutionary pressure to maximize individual success tends to create a tragedy of the commons (such as over-fishing or the destruction of our environment). This contribution addresses a number of related puzzles of human behavior with an evolutionary game theoretical approach as it has been successfully used to explain the behavior of other biological species many times, from bacteria to vertebrates. Our agent-based model distingui

NitroGenius: a nitrogen decision support system. A game to develop the optimal policy to solve the Dutch nitrogen pollution problem.

A nitrogen decision support system in the form of a game (NitroGenius) was developed for the Second International Nitrogen Conference. The aims were to: i) improve understanding among scientists and policy makers about the complexity of nitrogen pollution problems in an area of intensive agricultural, industrial, and transportation activity (The Netherlands); and ii) search for optimal policy solutions to prevent pollution effects at lowest economic and social costs. NitroGenius includes a model of nitrogen flows at relevant spatial and temporal scales including emissions of ammonia and nitrog

Gaming disorder and compensation-based gaming motivations: A longitudinal study of emerging adults.

BACKGROUND: Gaming motivations are central to understanding why individuals engage in video games and why some develop problematic patterns. However, while longitudinal studies are emerging, cross-sectional work still predominates, leaving dynamic processes underexplored. This study examined how gratification- and compensation-related gaming motivations predict the development of Gaming Disorder (GD) among emerging adults. METHODS: We conducted a three-wave, pre-registered longitudinal survey with 438 emerging adults, each wave spaced three months apart. GD severity was measured with the IGDS

Noncompliance With Safety Guidelines as a Free-Riding Strategy: An Evolutionary Game-Theoretic Approach to Cooperation During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Evolutionary game theory and public goods games offer an important framework to understand cooperation during pandemics. From this perspective, the COVID-19 situation can be conceptualized as a dilemma where people who neglect safety precautions act as free riders, because they get to enjoy the benefits of decreased health risk from others' compliance with policies despite not contributing to or even undermining public safety themselves. At the same time, humans appear to carry a suite of evolved psychological mechanisms aimed at curbing free riding in order to ensure the continued provision o

Play dynamics on electronic gaming machines: A conceptual review.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: This paper proposes that future research into electronic gaming machines (EGMs) is likely to benefit from conceptual and methodological approaches that capture the dynamic interplay between game parameters as well between the psychological needs of gamblers and their behavior. METHODS: The argument concerning the importance of player dynamics is developed in two sections. The first involves an analysis of existing work, which investigates individual gaming machine features and then a discussion; the second reappraises the value of Apter's (1982) Reversal Theory as a frame

Measuring risky loot box use: An item response theory analysis of the Risky Loot Box Index among adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: Loot boxes (LBs) are virtual items embedded within video games that contain randomly generated in-game prizes. LB use can become risky, so it is important to have good measurement instruments, especially among adolescents, who are particularly involved in video gaming and LB purchasing. The present study analyses the adequacy of the Risky Loot Box Index (RLI; Brooks & Clark, 2019) by applying item response theory (IRT). METHOD: Participants were 2,443 (59% males, mean age = 16.48, SD = 1.22) Italian high school students. RESULTS: The 2PL logistic model was applied. Item properties

The role of family and personality traits in Internet gaming disorder: A mediation model combining cognitive and attachment perspectives.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Gaming disorder was recently recognized as a mental health disorder by the World Health Organization and included in the International Classification of Diseases. Extensive research has been conducted with regard to psychosocial correlates and comorbidity, less so for the developmental mechanisms and the processes leading to the disorder. The association between family factors, personality traits, and gaming has been studied independently but not in combination. To fill this gap in knowledge, this study examined (a) the association between parental acceptance-rejection the

Feedback, competition, and cooperation: Behavioral effects of gamification elements in individual and team settings.

Gamification aims to increase user motivation and engagement by incorporating game design elements into non-game contexts. This study examines how two commonly used gamification elements (progress bars and leaderboards) shape user engagement and contribution behaviors within different participation structures (individual and team-based), drawing on Self-Determination Theory and Social Interdependence Theory as interpretive frameworks. A six-condition experimental design (N = 219) was implemented on an online interaction platform (Board) designed by the researchers, comparing leaderboards, prog
