The role of gender in antimicrobial resistance: Findings from a scoping review.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing global health threat requiring a strong focus on equity. This scoping review aimed to document the evidence to outline recommendations for gender-responsive AMR policies, programmes, and interventions aligned with the World Health Organization's People-centered approach to addressing AMR in the human health sector. We collected academic and grey literature published in English between 2000 and 2025 resulting in 141 records included for data extraction. Data was mapped onto a Gender and AMR Matrix and thematically analysed. Our findings suggest that r

Gender-based violence takes different forms like physical, sexual or psychological/ emotional violence. The causes of gender-based violence are multidimensional including social, economic, cultural, political and religious. The literatures written in relation to the gender-based violence are accessed using electronic databases as PubMed, Medline and Google scholar

Dissemination and implementation science for global ophthalmology: closing the last-mile translational gap.

Despite remarkable advances in ophthalmic diagnostics and therapeutics over the past decade, the global prevalence of avoidable visual impairment and blindness has remained unchanged. This paradox reflects a crisis of care delivery and the persistent failure to consistently, equitably, and effectively translate evidence-based interventions into routine practice for the millions who need them most. Dissemination and implementation (D&I) science offers ophthalmology rigorous, evidence-informed frameworks to close this last-mile translational gap. Drawing on the established body of D&I science th

A Comparative Policy Analysis of Health Inequities in Access to Healthcare Across Low- and High-Income Contexts: The Cases of Pakistan and Canada.

Globally, poverty remains a major obstacle to health parity, compromising well-being. This policy analysis aims to examine how poverty affects health inequities and healthcare access in two contexts: Canada, a high-income nation, and Pakistan, a low-income nation. This study employs a grounded approach, integrating a thorough review of the existing critical literature using systematic thematic analysis and synthesis. In Pakistan, chronic underinvestment, rural-urban gaps, inadequate infrastructure, and political instability exacerbate inequities in access to healthcare. Limited coverage, ineff

Problems of equity in US HIV integrated planning, 2015-2021: Enacting a bounded justice continuum.

The US HIV/AIDS response is notably worse than those of other high-income countries. The country's epidemic is marked by low viral suppression rates, high incidence, lacking coordination, and entrenched disparities along lines of sexuality, race/ethnicity, gender, class, and other factors. In 2010, the National HIV/AIDS Strategy for the United States (NHAS) was launched, centering an equity-oriented vision that prioritized marginalized groups. NHAS implementation required states to create HIV integrated plans to better coordinate services and meet populations' needs. We used Carol Bacchi's "Wh

Mandated capacity reductions created new gender disparities in liver cancer surveillance: a population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare capacity constraints often force providers to prioritize acute conditions over preventive services such as cancer screening. However, few studies have quantified the effects of capacity-constraining policies, which is critical for emergency preparedness. We assessed how precautionary government-mandated hospital capacity reductions during the COVID-19 pandemic affected liver cancer surveillance, health equity, and clinical outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a population-based cohort study of 567,632 patients with hepatitis B/C in Taiwan’s National Health Insurance Database,

Interventions to address global inequity in diabetes: international progress.

Diabetes is a serious chronic disease with high associated burden and disproportionate costs to communities based on socioeconomic, gender, racial, and ethnic status. Addressing the complex challenges of global inequity in diabetes will require intentional efforts to focus on broader social contexts and systems that supersede individual-level interventions. We codify and highlight best practice approaches to achieve equity in diabetes care and outcomes on a global scale. We outline action plans to target diabetes equity on the basis of the recommendations established by The Lancet Commission o

Double Discrimination, the Pay Gap in Gynecologic Surgery, and Its Association With Quality of Care.

In this commentary, we describe historical and other influences that drive "double discrimination" in gynecologic surgery-lower pay in the area of surgery that boasts the largest proportion of female surgeons and is focused on female patients and explore how it results in potentially lower quality care. Insurers reimburse procedures for women at a lower rate than similar procedures for men, although there is no medically justifiable reason for this disparity. The wage gap created by lower reimbursement rates disproportionately affects female surgeons, who are disproportionately represented amo

Adolescent Menstrual Health Equity.

Menstrual poverty (ie, the systemic lack of access to menstrual hygiene products, education, and sanitation) represents a profound barrier to health equity. This article examines the physical, psychological, and socioeconomic toll of period poverty, with a particular focus on adolescent, as well as transgender and gender-diverse, populations who face unique structural vulnerabilities. While state-level legislation expanding product access in public schools has proliferated, critical implementation deficits remain regarding comprehensive education and physical infrastructure. Evaluating the effectiveness of the National Health Insurance Subsidy Programme within Kenya's universal health coverage initiative: a study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Low-income and middle-income countries, including Kenya, are pursuing universal health coverage (UHC) through the establishment of Social Health Insurance programmes. As Kenya rolls out the recently unveiled UHC strategy that includes a national indigent cover programme, the goal of this study is to evaluate the impact of health insurance subsidy on poor households' healthcare costs and utilisation. We will also assess the effectiveness and equity in the beneficiary identification approach employed. METHODOLOGY AND ANALYSIS: Using a quantitative design with quasi-experimental and

A Systematic Evaluation of Cohort Selection Criteria and Their Impact on Machine Learning Model Performance and Demographic Disparities in COVID-19 Outcomes: Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Cohort selection criteria play a critical role in shaping machine learning (ML) model performance and the equity of clinical outcome predictions across demographic groups. In practice, cohort definitions are often influenced by variable and sometimes inconsistent data processing decisions, which may introduce bias and limit the generalizability of ML models. During the COVID-19 pandemic, rapid cohort construction further increased concerns about transparency and fairness in ML-based analyses. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to systematically examine how cohort selection and data proce

Opinion & Special Articles: Beyond Pronouns-Educating Trainees on the Impact of Language on Gender Inclusivity in Neurologic Practice.

Language plays an important role in ensuring gender inclusivity within neurology. Despite progress in language inclusivity, such as the emergence of explicit pronouns, more remains to be done. Historically, sex and gender have been used interchangeably, but they are, in fact, distinct concepts. This is an important distinction particularly in the care of transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals, whose assigned sex and gender are incongruent. In the health care setting, TGD individuals frequently report misgendering, identity invalidation, and gender pathologizing, which have led to hea

Patient engagement, shared decision-making and equity, diversity and inclusion considerations in research ethics board application forms and templates in Canada: a mixed methods study.

OBJECTIVES: Equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI), patient engagement and shared decision-making are important considerations throughout clinical trials, including the research ethics review stage. Meaningfully integrating these considerations can enhance the relevance and generalisability of trial results and reduce participation barriers among equity-deserving populations. Presently, it is unclear to what extent such guidance is provided at the ethics application stage for clinical trials. This study aimed to report the degree of guidance on EDI, patient engagement and shared decision-making

Optimizing Care for Cardiovascular-Kidney-Metabolic Syndrome: Leveraging Implementation Science in the Path Toward Pharmacoequity.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Overview the current landscape of pharmacoequity in cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) syndrome. RECENT FINDINGS: CKM syndrome is a key driver of the significant morbidity and mortality associated with cardiovascular disease, and poses a significant threat to public health. Despite a growing armamentarium of evidence-based therapies for the prevention and management of CKM syndrome, access to these treatments remains unequal. For instance, gender, race, and ethnicity-based disparities have been noted in use of first-line, guideline-directed, disease-modifying drugs. Barr
