BACKGROUND: Transwomen (also known as transgender women) are disproportionately affected by all forms of gender-based violence (GBV). The high prevalence of physical, sexual and emotional violence not only predisposes transwomen to HIV infection but also limits the uptake/access to HIV prevention, care, and treatment services. Despite the high prevalence of HIV infection and GBV among transwomen, there is limited evidence on how GBV affects the uptake and utilisation of HIV prevention, care, and treatment services. Therefore, this qualitative study explored how GBV affects uptake and utilisati

Gender-based violence (GBV) against transgender and nonbinary (TGNB) persons is a pervasive public health issue. GBV has been linked to mental health problems such as depression and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as well has risk for HIV seroconversion and HIV treatment nonadherence. However, the impact of GBV on HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use among TGNB persons has yet to be investigated. In the current study we assessed longitudinal PrEP persistence data from dried blood spots (DBS) collected from 172 racially and ethnically diverse TGNB participants during a 48-week PrEP dem

INTRODUCTION: Common mental disorders (CMDs) and suicidality are two of the most common psychological and mental health issues associated with acute and chronic sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV). Thus, the purpose of this study was to determine the magnitude of symptoms of CMDs, and suicidality among females experienced SGBV in Ethiopia.
METHOD: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 407 female survivors of SGBV in the One Stop Centers of the Amhara region. Data analysis was performed using SPSS version 25. The odds ratio at a p-value of 0.05 was used to determine the strength of t

Recent scientific literature has published about the Isolating Gender Violence (IGV), the violence exerted by harassers against those who support their victims. IGV provokes suffering to advocates with health and well-being consequences that have been analyzed by more recent research; but IGV provokes also suffering on the victims of gender violence when they see the suffering of those who have supported them and also for their isolation. Thus, the aim of the present study is to explore the health and well-being consequences of IGV on gender violence survivors. The methodology includes three n

BACKGROUND: Growing evidence indicates that gender-based violence (GBV) increased during COVID-19. We investigated self-reported impact of the pandemic on GBV at community, household and intimate partner (IPV) levels among young people and its associations with psychosocial wellbeing, i.e., COVID-related stressors and mental health.
METHODS: Cross-sectional data were drawn from a survey with young people ages 13-24 (N = 536) living with HIV (YPLWH) and without HIV (YPLWoH), in peri-urban Cape Town, South Africa. The survey, conducted February-October 2021, examined the impact of the initial l

BACKGROUND: One in three women experience intimate partner violence worldwide, according to many primary studies. However, systematic review and meta-analysis of intimate partner violence is very limited. Therefore, we set to summarize the findings of existing primary studies to generate evidence for informed decisions to tackle domestic violence against women in low and lower-middle income countries.
METHODS: Studies were searched from main databases (Medline via PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, PopLine and Web of Science), Google scholar and other relevant sources using electronic and manual techniq

BACKGROUND: Worldwide, almost one third (30%) of women who have been in a relationship have experienced physical and/or sexual violence from an intimate partner. Given the considerable negative impacts of intimate partner violence (IPV) on women's physical health and well-being, there is an urgent need for rigorous evidence on violence prevention interventions.
METHODS: The study, comprising a cluster randomized controlled trial (RCT) and in-depth qualitative study, will assess the impact on women's past year experience of physical and/or sexual IPV of a participatory gender training curricul

The killing of women and girls outside of intimate or domestic relationships - or non-intimate partner and family-related (non-IPF) femicide/feminicide - often triggers significant public and media attention. However, there has been comparatively little attention to non-IPF femicide/feminicide in research and policy, including how it is defined. To address this, we conducted a scoping review to identify current definitions of non-IPF femicide/feminicide and the types of evidence that exist in relation to these killings. The search strategy included electronic database searches (MEDLINE Complet

This study aimed to describe the characteristics of elderly people abuse notifications by gender and to assess notification patterns according to gender. We analyzed data from the Brazilian Information System for Notificable Diseases (SINAN) in 2017. We carried out a descriptive analysis of victim characteristics, violence, and the probable perpetrator according to gender. Pearson's χ2 test was used to assess the significance between groups. Then, we verified the main relationships between the studied characteristics and the victim's gender by simple correspondence analysis (SCA). Thus, 17,311

This study reports evidence of violence related to initiation and traditional male circumcision (ITMC) in South Africa. Our study conducted a search of the newspaper databases Newsbank and News24 from January 1, 2016, to August 31, 2023, and carried out a content analysis of newspaper articles that referenced violence in South African newspapers. Our initial search yielded 1796 articles; after screening for relevance and duplicates, 41 articles published in 16 South African newspapers and one online source were included in the analysis of the data. Most articles (41%) were published in 2016. F

Witnessing domestic violence (WDV) is recognized by the Istanbul Convention as psychological abuse that has dramatic consequences on the psychophysical health of children. Therefore, professionals who form the support network for WDV victims play a very fundamental role. In order to draw up useful guidelines for services dealing with WDV, and to give children more awareness of supportive settings, this study analyzes WDV in the perception of health and welfare professionals to enhance their skills and strategies for contrasting gender violence. Sixteen Neapolitan specialists dealing with WDV c

BACKGROUND: Violence against women is often managed as an acute clinical, social and legal event. A public-health perspective requires attention to longer-term physical, psychological and biological vulnerability. Emerging epigenetic research supports the plausibility of biological embedding of trauma, while underscoring evidentiary limits of biomarkers in medico-legal settings.
METHODS: This article was developed as a targeted evidence-informed synthesis rather than as a systematic or scoping review. Structured searches of biomedical and interdisciplinary databases were combined with selecte

Sexual corruption or sextortion has gained recent attention in the anti-corruption space. It occurs when a sexual favour is used as the currency for a bribe. Sexual corruption is a manifestation of gender-based violence, is inherently a human rights violation, and is a grave public health concern because of its effects on the physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing of the person who has experienced sexual corruption. It impacts health systems' abilities to achieve universal health coverage and deliver services in the most effective, high-quality manner. Despite the health consequences, limit

Infectious disease outbreaks (outbreaks) are increasing across the globe due to climate change, urbanisation and changes in land use, and many of their response measures impact risk factors for violence against women and girls (VAWG). We conducted a systematic review to consolidate existing evidence on the impact of any outbreaks, and their public health responses, on the change in magnitude of VAWG and mechanisms facilitating violence among women and girls in low-income and middle-income countries. Though our search strategy aimed to capture studies from any outbreak since 2014, all quantitat
