The copper economy response is partially conserved in rice (Oryza sativa L.).

Copper (Cu) is an essential element for plants, especially in photosynthesis, as it is required for plastocyanin function in electron transfer reactions at thylakoid membranes. In Arabidopsis thaliana, Cu deficiency leads to the Cu economy response, in which plants prioritize Cu usage by plastocyanin in detriment of non-essential cupric proteins. In rice (Oryza sativa), however, this response has not been characterized. Rice OsHMA5 is a Cu xylem-loading transporter involved in Cu translocation from roots to shoots, as suggested by the analysis of oshma5 mutant plants. Aiming to understand how

Responses, Physiological and Molecular Mechanisms, and Mitigation Strategies of Grapevine Under Salt Stress.

Soil salinization has become a major global abiotic threat restricting sustainable viticulture, especially in coastal and inland saline-alkali zones. Unlike cereal crops mainly suffering from sodium toxicity, grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) is a typical chloride-sensitive woody perennial, subjected to superimposed damages of osmotic stress, ionic imbalance and secondary oxidative injury under saline conditions which severely suppress vegetative growth and degrade berry quality. This review systematically summarizes the multi-layered physiological adaptive mechanisms of grapevine against salt str

Transcription factors SlBBX20 and SlMYB9 in tomato modulate plant height through gibberellin metabolic and response pathways.

Gibberellins (GAs) are plant hormones that regulate growth and development. We investigated how a transcription factor, SlBBX20, modulates plant height by affecting GA metabolism and response in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.). We found that overexpression of SlBBX20 caused dwarfism, which was rescued by GA treatment, while knockout of SlBBX20 increased plant height. SlBBX20 directly activated the expression of GA metabolic oxidase genes (SlGA2ox1, SlGA2ox4, and SlGA2ox5) and repressed the expression of a GA-responsive gene, SlMYB9. Plants overexpressing SlMYB9 grew taller than wild type and

Immature fruit abscission is triggered by hormonal changes in the seed coat of avocado.

Avocado (Persea americana) is an economically important tree crop that exhibits a high rate of immature fruit abscission (IFA), reducing yield. As the seed coat derived from recently abscised fruitlets displays a senescence phenotype, we hypothesized that this maternal organ plays a critical role in initiating IFA. Here, we show that fruitlets fated to abscise undergo growth arrest before shrinking and detaching from the tree. Comparative RNA-seq analysis indicated that growth arrest is associated with a transcriptome reprogramming that is first initiated in the seed coat and then transmitted

Molecular Basis of Phenotypic Plasticity: Understory-Induced DNA Methylation and Phytohormone Shifts Optimize Atractylodes lancea (Thunb.) DC Quality.

Atractylodes lancea (Thunb.) DC. (A. lancea) is a crop with medicinal and food properties. Currently, the majority of A. lancea available on the market is cultivated in extensive agricultural fields. This led to phenotypic variation in the plant and a reduction in the content of active ingredients. However, the cultivation of the understory can facilitate the phenotype of A. lancea. This, in turn, aligns with the characteristics of "excellent shape" and "high quality." Nonetheless, there is a paucity of research focusing on the phenotypic changes and molecular mechanisms underlying quality for

Roles of auxin in the inhibition of shoot branching in 'Dugan' fir.

Shoot branching substantially impacts vegetative and reproductive growth as well as wood characteristics in perennial woody species by shaping the shoot system architecture. Although plant hormones have been shown to play a fundamental role in shoot branching in annual species, their corresponding actions in perennial woody plants are largely unknown, in part due to the lack of branching mutants. Here, we demonstrated the role of plant hormones in bud dormancy transition toward activation and outgrowth in woody plants by comparing the physiological and molecular changes in the apical shoot ste

Integrated WGCNA and TO-GCN analysis reveals pathways and genes underlying salt tolerance in Sesbania cannabina.

Salt stress seriously threatens the growth and development of plants. To investigate how Sesbania cannabina responds to salt stress, we constructed a temporal regulatory response network under salt stress by integrating the physiological and transcriptomic data from 'Zhongke Jing No.1' at five time points (0, 6, 12, 24, and 48 h, n = 3) after salt treatment. The results indicated that salt stress increased the relative electrical conductivity (REC) and malondialdehyde (MDA) content, induced the accumulation of osmotic regulators, and enhanced antioxidant enzyme activities. A total of 688,424,7

Key residues for maintaining architecture, assembly of plant hormone SA receptor NPR1.

Salicylic acid (SA) is a pivotal hormone required for the development of resistance to many pathogens in plants. As an SA receptor, NPR1(Nonexpressor of Pathogenesis-Related Genes 1) plays a key regulatory role in the plant immune response. The function of NPR1 is dependent on the alteration of its oligomer-to-monomer. Research in recent years has proven that NPRs perceive SA and regulate the expression of downstream defense genes, but the mechanism of NPR1 oligomer-to-monomer conversion remains unclear. In this paper, we mainly studied the oligomerization of NPR1. By mutation experiments on s

Homoeologous exchange-associated ABA catabolism rewiring contributes to salinity tolerance in a synthetic tetraploid rice.

Altered ABA-related regulation is associated with transgressive salinity tolerance in a synthetic tetraploid rice carrying extensive post-polyploidy homoeologous exchanges. Plant polyploids often show higher environment resilience than their congeneric diploid progenitors. However, it remains unclear whether these traits arise directly from whole-genome duplication (WGD) or evolve through post-WGD changes. Here, we show that transgressive salt tolerance occurs in ca. 1.71% of an early-generation synthetic rice tetraploid from japonica-indica subspecies hybridization. Genome resequencing unrave

A four-dimensional spatial transcriptome atlas of barley caryopsis development and germination.

A 4-dimensional spatial gene expression atlas of Hordeum vulgare (barley) grain development and germination was generated using spatial transcriptomic analysis of serial sections to reconstruct transcript abundance in 3 physical dimensions and with temporal kinetics. We investigated the subtissue localizations of specific biological activities, using energy biology as an example, including genes encoding proteins involved in starch synthesis and degradation, sugar transport, and mitochondrial and chloroplast activity. This atlas revealed different patterns in gene expression across tissues and

Chlorophyll decomposition is accelerated in banana leaves after the long-term magnesium deficiency according to transcriptome analysis.

Magnesium (Mg) is an essential macronutrient for plant growth and development. Physiological and transcriptome analyses were conducted to elucidate the adaptive mechanisms to long-term Mg deficiency (MD) in banana seedlings at the 6-leaf stage. Banana seedlings were irrigated with a Mg-free nutrient solution for 42 days, and a mock control was treated with an optimum Mg supply. Leaf edge chlorosis was observed on the 9th leaf, which gradually turned yellow from the edge to the interior region. Accordingly, the total chlorophyll content was reduced by 47.1%, 47.4%, and 53.8% in the interior, ce

Transcriptome analysis reveals MYB and WRKY transcription factors involved in banana (Musa paradisiaca AA) magnesium deficiency.

The banana development was inhibited under the long-term magnesium deficiency (MD) stress, resulting in the leaf chlorosis. MYB108 and WRKY75 are involved in regulating the growth and development of banana leaves and roots under long-term MD. Magnesium deficiency (MD) causes plant growth inhibition, ageing acceleration, yield reduction and quality decline of banana (Musa paradisiaca AA), but the molecular regulatory mechanisms underlying the changes in response to long-term MD conditions remain unknown. In this study, a long-term MD experiment was performed with banana seedlings at the four-le

The degree and direction of subgenome expression bias in Brassica napus vary between cultivars, tissues and developmental stages.

Most extant plant lineages show evidence of past polyploidisation events in their genomes. Allopolyploids arise from hybridisation, resulting in polyploid genomes comprising subgenomes from different ancestors. Adaptation to their environment, pre- and post-hybridisation and selection for specific traits has led to several allopolyploids exhibiting an unequal contribution from their subgenomes to phenotypic traits. Associated regulatory changes may have given rise to cultivar-specific subgenome dominance that contributes to the diversity of phenotypes. Likewise, different tissues and developme

Chemical application improves stress resilience in plants.

In recent years, abiotic stresses, including droughts, floods, high temperatures, and salinity, have become increasingly frequent and severe. These stresses significantly hinder crop yields and product quality, posing substantial challenges to sustainable agriculture and global food security. Simultaneously, the rapidly growing global population exacerbates the need to enhance crop production under worsening environmental conditions. Consequently, the development of effective strategies to strengthen the resilience of crop plants against high temperatures, water scarcity, and extreme environme

Expression of BoNOL and BoHCAR genes during postharvest senescence of broccoli heads.

BACKGROUND: Chlorophyll is the most abundant pigment on Earth, essential for the capture of light energy during photosynthesis. During senescence, chlorophyll degradation is highly regulated in order to diminish toxicity of the free chlorophyll molecule due to its photoactivity. The first step in the chlorophyll degradation pathway is the conversion of chlorophyll b to chlorophyll a by means of two consecutive reactions catalyzed by enzymes coded by NYC1 (NON-YELLOW COLORING 1), NOL (NYC1-LIKE) and HCAR. RESULTS: In this work, we studied the expression of NOL and HCAR genes during postharvest

SDG721 and SDG705 are required for rice growth.

H3K4me3 plays important roles in development, transcription, and environmental responses. Here, we report that SDG721 (SET-domain group protein 721) and SDG705 are involved in regulating rice development. SDG721 and SDG705 encode TRITHORAX-like proteins, which appear to modulate H3K4 methylation levels. Loss of SDG721 and SDG705 function resulted in GA-deficient phenotypes, including semi-dwarfism, reduced cell length, and reduced panicle branching. The transcripts levels and H3K4me3 levels of GA biosynthesis genes and GA signaling pathway genes were downregulated in the sdg721 sdg705 plants.

Melatonin and Its Effects on Plant Systems.

Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) is a nontoxic biological molecule produced in a pineal gland of animals and different tissues of plants. It is an important secondary messenger molecule, playing a vital role in coping with various abiotic and biotic stresses. Melatonin serves as an antioxidant in postharvest technology and enhances the postharvest life of fruits and vegetables. The application of exogenous melatonin alleviated reactive oxygen species and cell damage induced by abiotic and biotic stresses by means of repairing mitochondria. Additionally, the regulation of stress-specifi

Transcriptome analysis of Citrus Aurantium L. to study synephrine biosynthesis during developmental stages.

Citrus aurantium L., sometimes known as "sour orange," is an important Chinese herb with young, immature fruits, or "zhishi," that are high in synephrine. Synephrine is a commonly utilized natural chemical with promising applications in effectively increasing metabolism, heat expenditure, energy level, oxidative fat, and weight loss. However, little is known about the genes and pathways involved in synephrine production during the critical developmental stages of C. aurantium L., which limits the development of the industry. According to this study, the concentration of synephrine gradually de

Comparative transcriptomic and metabolite profiling reveals genotype-specific responses to Fe starvation in chickpea.

Iron deficiency is a major nutritional stress that severely impacts crop productivity worldwide. However, molecular intricacies and subsequent physiological and metabolic changes in response to Fe starvation, especially in leguminous crops like chickpea, remain elusive. In the present study, we investigated physiological, transcriptional, and metabolic reprogramming in two chickpea genotypes (H6013 and L4958) with contrasting seed iron concentrations upon Fe deficiency. Our findings revealed that iron starvation affected growth and physiological parameters of both chickpea genotypes. Comparati

Transcriptome profiling of differentially expressed genes of male and female inflorescences in spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.).

Spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) is commonly considered a dioecious plant with heterogametic (XY) and homogametic (XX) sex chromosomes. The characteristic is also utilized for the production of spinach hybrid seeds. However, the molecular mechanisms of sex determination in spinach are still unclear because of a lack of genomic and transcriptomic information. In this study, RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) was performed in male and female inflorescences to provide insight into the molecular basis of sex determination in spinach. Comparative transcriptome analyses showed that 2278 differentially expressed
