Adsorption and intracellular uptake of mercuric mercury and methylmercury by methanotrophs and methylating bacteria.

The cell surface adsorption and intracellular uptake of mercuric mercury Hg(II) and methylmercury (MeHg) are important in determining the fate and transformation of Hg in the environment. However, current information is limited about their interactions with two important groups of microorganisms, i.e., methanotrophs and Hg(II)-methylating bacteria, in aquatic systems. This study investigated the adsorption and uptake dynamics of Hg(II) and MeHg by three strains of methanotrophs, Methylomonas sp. strain EFPC3, Methylosinus trichosporium OB3b, and Methylococcus capsulatus Bath, and two Hg(II)-me

Anaerobic biodegradation of TCE in laboratory columns of fractured saprolite.

An experiment was conducted to determine if biodegradation of trichloroethylene (TCE) can occur in previously uncontaminated ground water in saturated fractured saprolite (highly weathered material derived from sedimentary rocks). Two undisturbed columns (0.23 m diameter by 0.25 m long) of fractured saprolite were collected from approximately 2 m depth at an uncontaminated site on the Oak Ridge Reservation, Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Natural, uncontaminated ground water from the site, which was degassed and spiked with dissolved phase TCE, was continuously pumped through one column containing the n

Uncovering the mechanisms of ethanol stimulation on magnetite-enhanced anaerobic process treating oxytetracycline contained wastewater.

Magnetite has been proved to facilitate direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET)-based syntrophys and might alleviate inhibitory effects of antibiotics in anaerobic digestion (AD), while feeding ethanol was an effective approach to enrich the DIET partners. However, most of the existing studies were conducted at fixed ethanol concentration, few attentions were paid on the effects of differential ethanol proportion on AD, the underlying roles and mechanisms of ethanol stimulation remains unclear. This study systematically investigated the impact of ethanol stimulation on anaerobic processes

Enhanced biostimulation coupled with a dynamic groundwater recirculation system for Cr(VI) removal from groundwater: A field-scale study.

A large gap exists between laboratory findings and successful implementation of bioremediation technologies for the treatment of chromium (Cr)-contaminated sites. This work conducted the enhanced bioremediation of Cr(VI) in situ via the addition of organic carbon (ethanol) coupled with a dynamic groundwater recirculation (DGR)-based system in a field-scale study. The DGR system was applied to successfully (1) remove Cr(VI) from groundwater via enhanced flushing by the recirculation system and (2) deliver the biostimulant to the heterogeneous subsurface environment, including a sand/cobble aqui

Structural characterization and modeling of the Borrelia burgdorferi hybrid histidine kinase Hk1 periplasmic sensor: A system for sensing small molecules associated with tick feeding.

Two-component signal transduction systems are the primary mechanisms by which bacteria perceive and respond to changes in their environment. The Hk1/Rrp1 two-component system (TCS) in Borrelia burgdorferi consists of a hybrid histidine kinase and a response regulator with diguanylate cyclase activity, respectively. Phosphorylated Rrp1 catalyzes the synthesis of c-di-GMP, a second messenger associated with bacterial life-style control networks. Spirochetes lacking either Hk1 or Rrp1 are virulent in mice but destroyed within feeding ticks. Activation of Hk1 by exogenous stimuli represents the se

Bacterial communities in tetrachloroethene-polluted groundwaters: a case study.

The compositions of bacterial groundwater communities of three sites contaminated with chlorinated ethenes were analyzed by pyrosequencing their 16S rRNA genes. For each location, the entire and the active bacterial populations were characterized by independent molecular analysis of the community DNA and RNA. The sites were selected to cover a broad range of different environmental conditions and contamination levels, with tetrachloroethene (PCE) and trichloroethene (TCE) being the primary contaminants. Before sampling the biomass, a long-term monitoring of the polluted locations revealed high

Cr(VI) and azo dye removal using a hollow-fibre membrane system functionalized with a biogenic Pd-magnetite catalyst.

This study investigates the application of a hybrid system combining hollow-fibre membrane technology with the reductive abilities of magnetic nanoparticles for the remediation of toxic Cr(VI) and the azo dye, Remazol Black B. Nano-scale biogenic magnetite (Fe3O4), formed by microbial reduction of the mineral ferrihydrite, has a high reductive capacity due to the presence of Fe(II) in the mineral structure. The magnetic nanoparticles (approximately 20 nm) can be arrayed with Pd0 nanoparticles (approximately 5 nm) making a catalytically active nanomaterial. Membrane units, with and without nano

Co-application of γ-aminobutyric acid and Bacillus zanthoxyli HN90 is associated with improved vegetative traits and altered rhizosphere microbial profiles in rice under a fixed reduced-nitrogen regime.

Rice vegetative traits and rhizosphere microbial profiles were evaluated after co-application of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and Bacillus zanthoxyli HN90 under a fixed reduced-nitrogen regime. In controlled glasshouse pot experiments in which all treatments in the second pot trial were maintained at 80% of the conventional N rate, co-application of 5 mM GABA and the plant-growth-promoting rhizobacterium Bacillus zanthoxyli HN90 was associated with a shorter, sturdier phenotype, with 29.5% greater stem diameter and 36.9% higher SPAD at maturity relative to the reduced-N control. These vegetative

Nature-based solution-inspired electroactive ecological floating bed: a technology for carbon-nitrogen removal and ecological performance assessment in aquaculture Tailwater.

The remediation of polluted aquaculture water and sediment, which severely threatens aquatic ecosystems, is of paramount importance. In this study, a Nature-based Solution (NbS) of electroactive ecological floating bed coupled with an oxygen-producing submerged plants system (EEFB-PS) was designed, where a conductive floating-bed matrix functioned as an integrated biocathode embedded within the rhizosphere and was coupled to the anode in the sediment. Under a 12 h light/dark condition, submerged plants induced diel DO oscillations that enabled nitrification in the daytime and electroautotrophi

Efficacy of nitrate and biochar@birnessite composite microspheres for simultaneous suppression of As(III) mobilization and greenhouse gas emissions in flooded paddy soils.

Elevated As(III) pollution and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are two primary environmental concerns associated with flooded paddy soils. Herein, a novel biochar@birnessite composite microsphere was engineered using a biochar, birnessite and sodium alginate formulation. The microspheres were applied along with nitrate to examine their efficacy in suppressing As(III) mobilization and GHG emissions in an As-contaminated flooded paddy soil. After a 10-day incubation period, the combined nitrate + microsphere treatment achieved desirable remediation effects versus a nitrate-alone treatment, with m

Improved anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge under ammonia stress by nanoscale zero-valent iron/peracetic acid pretreatment and hydrochar regulation: Insights from multi-omics analyses.

This study developed a novel strategy combining a nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI)/peracetic acid (PAA) pretreatment and hydrochar regulation to enhance anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge (WAS) under ammonia-stressed conditions. The strategy significantly enhanced methane production at ammonia concentrations below 3000 mg/L, with the regulation groups (AN3000/REG) achieving a 50.1 % increase in cumulative methane yield. Metagenomic analysis demonstrated a 14.2 % enrichment of key functional microorganisms, including syntrophic fatty acid-oxidizing bacteria and hydrogenotrophic meth

Synergistic effect of extracellular polymeric substances and carbon layer on electron utilization of Fe@C during anaerobic treatment of refractory wastewater.

Nano zero-valent iron (NZVI) has been widely used to improve refractory wastewater treatment. However, the rapid dissolution of NZVI causes a waste of resources and an unstable bioaugmentation. Herein, to verify the essential role of slow release of NZVI on biological systems, a core-shell structured Fe@C composite was developed to demonstrate the long-term feasibility of Fe@C for enhancing azo dye biodegradation in comparison to a mixture of NZVI and carbon powder (Fe+C). The 150 days of long-term reactor operation showed that, although both Fe@C and Fe+C enhanced azo dye degradation, the for

Utilization of microbial biofilms as monitors of bioremediation.

A down-well aquifer microbial sampling system was developed using glass wool or Bio-Sep beads as a solid-phase support matrix. Here we describe the use of these devices to monitor the groundwater microbial community dynamics during field bioremediation experiments at the U.S. Department of Energy Natural and Accelerated Bioremediation Research Program's Field Research Center at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. During the 6-week deployment, microbial biofilms colonized glass wool and bead internal surfaces. Changes in viable biomass, community composition, metabolic status, and respiratory st

Arsenic behavior in soil-plant system under the manure application with the combination of antibiotic and roxarsone.

Limited attention has been given to the interaction between antibiotics and arsenic in the soil-plant system. In this investigation, Medicago sativa seedlings were grown in soil treated with cow manure containing oxytetracycline (OTC) or sulfadiazine (SD), as well as arsenic (introduced through roxarsone, referred to as ROX treatment). The study revealed a notable increase in As(III) and dimethylarsinic acid (DMA(V)) levels in rhizosphere soils and plant root tissues as arsenic contamination intensified in the presence of antibiotics, while concentrations of As(V) and monomethylarsonic acid (M

Fe(III) enhances Cr(VI) bioreduction in a MFC-granular sludge coupling system: Experimental evidence and metagenomics analysis.

The influence of Fe(III) on the bioreduction efficiency of Cr(VI) in a microbial fuel cell (MFC)-granular sludge coupling system using dissolved methane as an electron donor and carbon source was explored, and the mechanism of Fe(III) mediating enhancement in the bioreduction process of Cr(VI) in the coupling system was also investigated. Results showed that the presence of Fe(III) enhanced the ability of the coupling system to reduce Cr(VI). The average removal efficiencies of Cr(VI) in the anaerobic zone in response to 0, 5, and 20 mg/L of Fe(III) were 16.53±2.12%, 24.17±2.10%, and 46.33±4.4

Distinct effects of conductive materials on anaerobic sulfate-rich wastewater treatment under varying operational modes.

Conductive materials (CMs) have shown great potential in enhancing anaerobic digestion of sulfate-rich wastewater by improving electron transfer. However, how the effectiveness of CMs varies under different reactor operational modes that shape microbial communities and influence system performance remains poorly understood. This study systematically compared sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) and continuous-flow reactors (CFRs) amended with magnetite (Fe₃O₄) or powdered activated carbon (PAC) for treating sulfate-rich wastewater. CM amendments significantly accelerated sulfate reduction, volatil
