[Role of patient travel in transmission of human African trypanosomiasis in a highly endemic area of the Ivory Coast].

Human African trypanosomosis (HAT) remains a major public health problem in Subsaharan Africa. The region around the town of Bonon in middle western Côte d'Ivoire is a highly endemic HAT zone. The purpose of this study was to assess the role of travelling of infected patients in transmission of HAT. The study population included a total of 96 patients in whom HAT had been diagnosed actively or passively between 1999 and 2000. Information on each patient's residence and workplaces, i.e. water site, and farm field, was used to calculate the mean distance traveled and mean number of places visite

New Perspectives on Analyzing and Interpreting Base Running Efficiency: A GPS Approach.

Base running performance in baseball depends on the ability to efficiently transition between linear and curvilinear sprinting; however, current assessment approaches provide limited insight into how speed is developed, maintained, or lost across these phases. This perspective presents a methodological framework for using GPS technology to enhance the analysis and interpretation of base running performance through segment-specific velocity and time diagnostics. GPS data were collected during 54.7 m linear sprints and home-to-second-base curvilinear sprints in three high-school baseball players

High annual-cycle repeatability suggests low flexibility to environmental changes in a near-threatened migratory shorebird.

Migratory species often repeat spatio-temporal patterns within their annual cycle. Although this may help to promote knowledge about local features and site quality, stereotyped behaviours may also create an ecological trap by preventing the flexibility required to adjust to environmental changes. Using a long-term international dataset, this study assesses 24 spatial and temporal parameters describing the repeatability of the entire migratory cycle in 94 individuals of the migratory near-threatened Eurasian curlew (Numenius arquata) that were tracked for up to 7 consecutive years using high-r

Leveraging GIS-based multi-criteria analysis for flood-prone area detection in Nsanje District, Malawi.

Flooding remains one of the most severe and recurrent natural hazards in sub-Saharan Africa, posing persistent threats to rural livelihoods, infrastructure, and environmental stability. In Malawi, the Lower Shire River Valley, particularly Nsanje district, is highly vulnerable to recurrent flooding due to climatic variability, land-use change, and geomorphological characteristics. Despite the growing availability of geospatial data, localized flood vulnerability assessments remain limited, constraining effective disaster preparedness and land-use planning. This study applied a Geographic Infor

Factors associated with the spatial distribution of leprosy: a systematic review of the published literature.

This systematic review aimed to identify factors related to the spatial distribution of leprosy through studies utilising geographic information systems (GIS) techniques. PRISMA 2020 guidelines were adopted and the Population, Concept, Context (PCC) strategy employed to formulate the research question and define its scope: what factors associated with the spatial context of leprosy have been identified in studies utilising GIS techniques, and what are the key contributions of GIS in understanding the disease? The bibliographic databases consulted included PubMed, LILACS, EMBASE and Scopus. Onl

Effects of telemetry collars on two free-roaming feral equid species.

There are two species of free-roaming feral equids in North America: horses (Equus caballus) and donkeys or "burros" (E. asinus). Both species were introduced as domestic animals to North America in the early 1500s and currently inhabit rangelands across the western United States, Canada, and all continents except Antarctica. Despite their global distribution, little is known about their fine scale spatial ecology. Contemporary research tools to assess space use include global positioning system (GPS) tracking collars, but older models were problematic due to stiff collar belting causing poor

Landslide Susceptibility Evaluation Based on Potential Disaster Identification and Ensemble Learning.

Catastrophic landslides have much more frequently occurred worldwide due to increasing extreme rainfall events and intensified human engineering activity. Landslide susceptibility evaluation (LSE) is a vital and effective technique for the prevention and control of disastrous landslides. Moreover, about 80% of disastrous landslides had not been discovered ahead and significantly impeded social and economic sustainability development. However, the present studies on LSE mainly focus on the known landslides, neglect the great threat posed by the potential landslides, and thus to some degree cons

Modelling an Optimal Climate-Driven Malaria Transmission Control Strategy to Optimise the Management of Malaria in Mberengwa District, Zimbabwe: A Multi-Method Study Protocol.

Malaria is a persistent public health problem, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa where its transmission is intricately linked to climatic factors. Climate change threatens malaria elimination efforts in limited resource settings, such as in the Mberengwa district. However, the role of climate change in malaria transmission and management has not been adequately quantified to inform interventions. This protocol employs a multi-method quantitative study design in four steps, starting with a scoping review of the literature, followed by a multi-method quantitative approach using geospatial analy

Continuous approximation and GIS-enhanced design optimization of feeder bus networks along rail corridors.

As urbanization accelerates, urban public transportation systems are tasked with meeting the growing demand for travel. According to statistics, the regional rail transit network currently handles 60% of the passenger volume for trips originating from around the stations, and this is projected to increase by over 20% within the next decade. However, the current feeder bus services suffer from insufficient coverage, leading to inconvenience for passengers and impacting the overall efficiency of the transportation system. To enhance the public transit service coverage along a rail transit corrid

A comprehensive GPS-based analysis of activity spaces in early and late pregnancy using the ActMAP framework.

Health implications of mobility during pregnancy entail a need to understand pregnant women's activity spaces. We present ActMAP, a framework for quantifying multiple aspects of activity spaces from distinct trips and stays derived from GPS data. We applied ActMAP to data from 238 pregnant women in Barcelona, Spain (2018-2020) and explored weekday, weekend and intraday associations between pregnancy trimester and activity spaces. Activities were more centred around the home later in pregnancy. However, the number of visited places and daily trips remained largely constant throughout pregnancy.

Validation of Alogo Move Pro: A GPS-Based Inertial Measurement Unit for the Objective Examination of Gait and Jumping in Horses.

Quantitative information on how well a horse clears a jump has great potential to support the rider in improving the horse's jumping performance. This study investigated the validation of a GPS-based inertial measurement unit, namely Alogo Move Pro, compared with a traditional optical motion capture system. Accuracy and precision of the three jumping characteristics of maximum height (Zmax), stride/jump length (lhorz), and mean horizontal speed (vhorz) were compared. Eleven horse-rider pairs repeated two identical jumps (an upright and an oxer fence) several times (n = 6 to 10) at different he
