The impact of time on predicate forms in the manual modality: signers, homesigners, and silent gesturers.

It is difficult to create spoken forms that can be understood on the spot. But the manual modality, in large part because of its iconic potential, allows us to construct forms that are immediately understood, thus requiring essentially no time to develop. This paper contrasts manual forms for actions produced over three time spans-by silent gesturers who are asked to invent gestures on the spot; by homesigners who have created gesture systems over their life spans; and by signers who have learned a conventional sign language from other signers-and finds that properties of the predicate differ

Pre-linguistic children with cleft palate: growth of gesture, vocalization, and word use.

Children with cleft lip and/or palate show early delays in speech and vocabulary development that may have an impact on later communication and social development. While delays in the complexity of babbling may put children at risk for later delays in speech and language development, there is considerable variability in development. This study focused on the rate of children's communication acts, canonical vocalizations, and word use as they made the transition from the pre-linguistic to linguistic development. The study included 15 children with non-syndromic cleft lip and/or palate who were

Iconic gesture in normal language and word searching conditions: a case of conduction aphasia.

Although there is a substantive body of research about the language used by individuals with aphasia, relatively little is known about their spontaneous iconic gesture. A single case study of LT, an individual with conduction aphasia indicated qualitative differences between the spontaneous iconic gestures produced alongside fluent speech and in tip of the tongue states. The current study examined the iconic gestures produced by another individual with conduction aphasia, WT, and a group of 11 control participants. Comparisons were made between iconic gestures produced alongside normal languag

Analogy between laryngeal gesture in Mongolian Long Song and supracricoid partial laryngectomy.

This article reports the results of a multiparametrical analysis of Mongolian Long Song, characterised by multiple ornamentation and shows the similarities between the laryngeal behaviour observed during these ornamentations and the compensatory gesture produced by patients after supracricoid partial laryngectomy. This study includes (1) a physiological analysis of videofiberscopic laryngeal data from a healthy Mongolian singer and from three non-singer French-speaking clinical patients; and (2) an acoustical analysis (fundamental frequency and intensity). For the singer, the fiberoptic analys

Re-examining the gesture engram hypothesis. New perspectives on apraxia of tool use.

In everyday life, we are led to reuse the same tools (e.g., fork, hammer, coffee-maker), raising the question as to whether we have to systematically recreate the idea of the manipulation which is associated with these tools. The gesture engram hypothesis offers a straightforward answer to this issue, by suggesting that activation of gesture engrams provides a processing advantage, avoiding portions of the process from being reconstructed de novo with each experience. At first glance, the gesture engram hypothesis appears very plausible. But, behind this beguiling simplicity lies a set of unre

Real-time gesture recognition by learning and selective control of visual interest points.

For the real-time recognition of unspecified gestures by an arbitrary person, a comprehensive framework is presented that addresses two important problems in gesture recognition systems: selective attention and processing frame rate. To address the first problem, we propose the Quadruple Visual Interest Point Strategy. No assumptions are made with regard to scale or rotation of visual features, which are computed from dynamically changing regions of interest in a given image sequence. In this paper, each of the visual features is referred to as a visual interest point, to which a probability d

Gestural recovery and the role of forward and reversed syllabic repetitions as stuttering inhibitors in adults.

Instead of being the core stuttering 'problem', syllabic repetitions may be a biological mechanism, or 'solution', to the central involuntary stuttering block. Simply put, stuttering is an endogenous transitory state of 'shadowed speech', a choral speech derivative that allows for a neural release of the central block. To investigate this possibility, 14 adults who stutter read while listening to forward fluent speech, reversed fluent speech, forward stuttered speech, and reversed stuttered speech. All conditions induced significant degrees of stuttering inhibition when compared to a control c

Discourse Context and Co-Speech Gestures Jointly Shape Hierarchical Prediction During the Processing of a Multimodal Narrative.

Understanding one another in daily communication depends on predicting language from prior discourse context and visual signals, such as co-speech gestures. However, it remains unclear how discourse context and gestures jointly shape neural predictions during naturalistic language processing. Here, participants watched multimodal narratives with spontaneously produced gestures during fMRI scanning. Leveraging transformer-based computational modeling, we disentangled linguistic predictability from contextual informativity at the sentence level, and observed that these deconstructed measures eng

The power of pain: The temporal-spatial dynamics of empathy induced by body gestures and facial expressions.

Two non-verbal pain representations, body gestures and facial expressions, can communicate pain to others and elicit our own empathic responses. However, the specific impact of these representations on neural responses of empathy, particularly in terms of temporal and spatial neural mechanisms, remains unclear. To address this issue, the present study developed a kinetic pain empathy paradigm comprising short animated videos depicting a protagonist's "real life" pain and no-pain experiences through body gestures and facial expressions. Electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings were conducted on

Human-cobot collaboration's impact on success, time completion, errors, workload, gestures and acceptability during an assembly task.

The 5.0 industry promotes collaborative robots (cobots). This research studies the impacts of cobot collaboration using an experimental setup. 120 participants realized a simple and a complex assembly task. 50% collaborated with another human (H/H) and 50% with a cobot (H/C). The workload and the acceptability of the cobotic collaboration were measured. Working with a cobot decreases the effect of the task complexity on the human workload and on the output quality. However, it increases the time completion and the number of gestures (while decreasing their frequency). The H/C couples have a hi

Sensitivity of occipito-temporal cortex, premotor and Broca's areas to visible speech gestures in a familiar language.

When looking at a speaking person, the analysis of facial kinematics contributes to language discrimination and to the decoding of the time flow of visual speech. To disentangle these two factors, we investigated behavioural and fMRI responses to familiar and unfamiliar languages when observing speech gestures with natural or reversed kinematics. Twenty Italian volunteers viewed silent video-clips of speech shown as recorded (Forward, biological motion) or reversed in time (Backward, non-biological motion), in Italian (familiar language) or Arabic (non-familiar language). fMRI revealed that la

Cerebral correlates of imitation of intransitive gestures: An integrative review of neuroimaging data and brain lesion studies.

The aim of the present review is to investigate the cerebral correlates, more particularly the role of the parietal lobe, when imitating intransitive gestures, a task highly sensitive to apraxic errors. By providing an integrative review of functional imaging and brain lesion studies, we focused our attention on the meaning of gestures (meaningful and meaningless) and the body parts (finger and hand). We found that imitation of intransitive gestures is relying upon a bilateral brain network including fronto-parietal areas irrespective of meaning or body parts. Moreover, we observed that while

[Psychological impact of out-of-hospital cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the witness engaged in gestures of survival].

The occurrence of an unexpected sudden death puts the witnesses of this event in a situation of high emotional impact. The benefit to allow the families of victims to dispense the first resuscitation techniques has been emphasized. However, little data exist on the emotional impact of a cardio-respiratory arrest outside the hospital on the witness, who is often a close family member. Recently, we investigated the presence of psychological distress and the factors influencing it, in the active practice of basic resuscitation gestures by the witnesses guided by the operator 112. Aided and unaided speech supplementation strategies: effect of alphabet cues and iconic hand gestures on dysarthric speech.

PURPOSE: This study compared the influence of speaker-implemented iconic hand gestures and alphabet cues on speech intelligibility scores and strategy helpfulness ratings for 3 adults with cerebral palsy and dysarthria who differed from one another in their overall motor abilities. METHOD: A total of 144 listeners (48 per speaker) orthographically transcribed sentences spoken with alphabet cues (aided), iconic hand gestures (unaided), and a habitual speech control condition; scores were compared within audio-visual and audio-only listening formats. RESULTS: When listeners were presented with

Wearable IMU-Derived Kinematic Reference Profiles of Lower-Limb Kick and Wipe Gestures for Contactless Automotive Tailgate Activation.

Contactless automotive tailgate activation relies on recognizing intentional lower-limb gestures near the rear bumper, yet these systems are developed and evaluated from sensor-specific recordings rather than from the underlying human movement, so quantitative, sensor-independent kinematic reference profiles for these gestures are lacking. This study establishes wearable inertial measurement unit (IMU)-derived reference profiles of two tailgate-activation gestures: a forward kick and a lateral wipe. Lower-body motion was recorded in 56 adult participants using a seven-sensor Xsens Awinda confi

Audio-visual matching of speech and non-speech oral gestures in patients with aphasia and apraxia of speech.

BACKGROUND: Audio-visual speech perception mechanisms provide evidence for a supra-modal nature of phonological representations, and a link of these mechanisms to motor representations of speech has been postulated. This leads to the question if aphasic patients and patients with apraxia of speech are able to exploit the visual signal in speech perception and if implicit knowledge of audio-visual relationships is preserved in these patients. Moreover, it is unknown if the audio-visual processing of mouth movements has a specific organisation in the speech as compared to the non-speech domain.

EXPRESS: How error rates scale with chance rate among dogs following human pointing gestures, and why it matters.

Humans use pointing gestures to communicate with dogs. However, efforts to study how dogs receive this communicative signal have produced ambiguous results. Prior work presenting a choice between two options has shown that dogs choose the pointed-to option at above chance levels, but just barely. With only two options, the high probability of choosing correctly by chance weakens the signal. After replicating the 2-option task, we changed the task's parameters by presenting dogs with six options. We compared two models that make divergent, quantitative predictions on how the success rates will

Exploring the EMG transient: the muscular activation sequences used as novel time-domain features for hand gestures classification.

INTRODUCTION: Muscular activation sequences have been shown to be suitable time-domain features for classification of motion gestures. However, their clinical application in myoelectric prosthesis control was never investigated so far. The aim of the paper is to evaluate the robustness of these features extracted from the EMG signal in transient state, on the forearm, for classifying common hand tasks. METHODS: The signal associated to four hand gestures and the rest condition were acquired from ten healthy people and two persons with trans-radial amputation. A feature extraction algorithm al

Facial speech gestures: the relation between visual speech processing, phonological awareness, and developmental dyslexia in 10-year-olds.

Successful communication in everyday life crucially involves the processing of auditory and visual components of speech. Viewing our interlocutor and processing visual components of speech facilitates speech processing by triggering auditory processing. Auditory phoneme processing, analyzed by event-related brain potentials (ERP), has been shown to be associated with impairments in reading and spelling (i.e. developmental dyslexia), but visual aspects of phoneme processing have not been investigated in individuals with such deficits. The present study analyzed the passive visual Mismatch Respo
