Minimal zoonotic risk of cryptosporidiosis and giardiasis from frogs and reptiles.

The zoonotic potential of the protist parasites Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia duodenalis in amphibians and reptiles raises public health concerns due to their growing popularity as pets. This review examines the prevalence and diversity of these parasites in wild and captive amphibians and reptiles to better understand the zoonotic risk. Research on Giardia in both groups is limited, and zoonotic forms of Cryptosporidium or Giardia have not been reported in amphibians. Host-adapted Cryptosporidium species dominate in reptiles, albeit some reptiles have been found to carry zoonotic (C. homin

Intestinal giardiasis in children: Five years' experience in a reference unit.

BACKGROUND: Giardiasis is highly prevalent in children and is often mildly symptomatic. First-line treatment is metronidazole, but treatment failure is not uncommon. We describe a paediatric series, to identify risk factors for treatment failure and to analyse the safety and effectiveness of other treatment strategies. METHODS: Retrospective observational study, including children diagnosed with giardiasis from 2014 to 2019. Diagnosis was based on direct visualisation by microscopy after concentration using an alcohol-based fixative, antigen detection and/or DNA detection by polymerase chain

Giardia Lamblia Subtypes and Their Relationship with Clinical Symptoms in Patients with Giardiasis.

Giardia lamblia has proved to be the most common intestinal protozoan parasite in humans that causes giardiasis. Given the high mutations in the genome of this parasite, the present study was conducted to determine the prevalence of Giardia lamblia subtypes and their relationship with clinical symptoms in patients who appear to have giardiasis. In 69 stool specimens with an appropriate number of giardia cysts, the DNA was first purified, and the genotype was then determined based on the glutamate dehydrogenase (gdh) gene sequence using PCR-RFLP. Data were collected on the clinical symptoms of

Giardiasis mimicking celiac disease in a patient of common variable immunodeficiency.

An adolescent boy presented to pediatrics outpatient department with complaints of recurrent diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and pedal edema since 3-4 months, with no relief even after taking treatment. His investigation revealed decreased serum IgA, IgG, and IgM levels with hypoproteinemia. Duodenal biopsy showed features of celiac disease (CD), but tissue transglutaminase IgA was negative. In stool examination, plenty of Giardia lamblia cysts and eggs of Hymenolepis nana were present. He improved on treatment and remained asymptomatic for 4 months. However, he again developed symptoms and succum

Giardiasis in a patient undergoing chemotherapy for retinoblastoma and acute myelogenous leukemia.

Giardiasis is a common cause of diarrhea in undeveloped countries, but is very rare in developed countries. A patient with acute myelogenous leukemia and retinoblastoma presented with a high fever and severe watery diarrhea during induction chemotherapy. On microscopy, cysts were seen in her stool, suggesting Giardia intestinalis, which was confirmed on polymerase chain reaction (PCR). G. intestinalis was also detected in the patient's asymptomatic parents, who may have transmitted it to the patient. Giardiasis should be tested for in patients with severe and persistent diarrhea during chemoth

A case of giardiasis expressing severe systemic symptoms and marked hypereosinophilia.

An 88-year-old Japanese woman was referred to our hospital due to a one-month history of face edema, aphagia, shortness of breath, and skin rush over almost her entire skin. She had no abdominal symptoms. Her peripheral blood count showed a white blood cell (WBC) count of 27.1x10(9)/L with 82.1% eosinophils. Serum non-specific Immunoglobulin E was within a normal range. Soluble interleukin-2 receptor was elevated to 4200U/mL. At first, her eosinophil count was so high that we suspected she had an eosinophilic leukemia or hypereosinophilic syndrome. After admission, cysts of Giardia duodenalis

[Giardiasis and cryptosporidiosis in day-care centers in the municipality Campinas SP].

The prevalence of the Giardia duodenalis and Cryptosporidium parvum infections were studied in children 2-60 months old (n = 310) grouped to sex and age, enrolled in 8 day-care centers. Giardiasis was found in 42 (13.5%) of the children and, was most frequent in the age group corresponding to 19-24 months old although children at the first six months of life also presented positive faecal samples. Statistical analysis indicated no association between sex (p > 0.05) and prevalence for Giardia infection. C. parvum was detected in 20 (6.4%) of the children. Children seven to twelve months old sho

Giardiasis: a common, sexually transmissible parasitic diarrhea with pitfalls in diagnosis.

Giardia lamblia is the number one intestinal parasite in the United States. Symptoms of giardiasis include upper abdominal pain and distress, flatulence, nervousness, and diarrhea. Multiple stool specimens examined for ova and parasites by nonexpert parasitologists will frequently not provide the diagnosis, and special studies must then be done. Antibiotics, antidiarrheals, certain enema preparations, and oily laxatives can cause a temporary disappearance of parasites from the stool. Treatment of choice is a five-day course of quinacrine hydrochloride. Recently, attention has been brought to t

Treatment of intestinal amoebiasis and giardiasis; efficacy of metronidazole and tinidazole compared.

Aboriginal children who were aged from six to nine years and living in Cherbourg Community were treated for Giardia Lamblia and Entamoeba histolytica infection with either the manufacturer's recommended dose of metronidazole (Flagyl) or with tinidazole (Fasigyn), at two-dose levels. Tinidazole successfully cleared both protozoans from stools, a single dose being as effective as the longer regimens which were studied. The obvious advantage of single-dose administration is that it should permit more effective treatment of these intestinal parasites, especially in Aboriginal populations.

Giardiasis in day-care centers: evidence of person-to-person transmission.

In August and September 1975, an outbreak of diarrhea occurred in children 1 to 3 1/2 years old attending a day-care center. An investigation revealed overlapping epidemics of shigellosis and giardiasis, with 54% of the children infected with Giardia lamblia. At two other centers 29% and 38% of the children had G. lamblia infection, but none had Shigella. The prevalence of G. lamblia in the day-care children was significantly higher than the 2% prevalence in age-matched children not in day-care centers. Epidemiologic data suggested fecal-oral transmission of the parasite from child to child in
