BACKGROUND: Gingival Recession (GR) is defined as the displacement of the soft tissue margin apical to the cementoenamel junction which can lead to root exposure and hypersensitivity. Treatment of GR has become an important therapeutic issue due to the increasing number of cosmetic requests from patients. Several techniques exist for the management of GR that include Sub-Epithelial Connective Tissue Graft (SECTG), Pedicle Graft (lateral and coronal), and Free Gingival Graft (FGG) and more. FGG is a non-submerged grafting procedure carried out for the management of recession defects. However, F

Gingivitis is a reversible inflammatory condition of the gingival tissues, primarily initiated by microbial plaque accumulation. The present study aimed to assess the therapeutic efficacy of 1% hyaluronic acid (HA) gel as an adjuvant remedy to standard scaling and polishing procedures (SPP) in the management of gingivitis. Twenty systemically healthy adults diagnosed with gingivitis were randomly assigned into two parallel groups (n = 10 each). The test group received full-mouth SPP in combination with twice-daily topical application of 1% HA gel, while the control group underwent SPP alone. C

BackgroundPeriodontal disease has two types of inflammatory states: gingivitis and periodontitis. While studies suggest a link between periodontal disease and Alzheimer's disease (AD), current evidence is insufficient to establish causality. This study employed Mendelian randomization (MR) and bioinformatics to investigate causal relationships between gingivitis, periodontitis, and AD types, while identifying diagnostic biomarkers through transcriptome-based bioinformatics approaches.ObjectiveThis study aims to explore the causal relationship between periodontal disease and AD using MR combine

INTRODUCTION: Ligneous gingivitis (LG) is a rare manifestation of plasminogen deficiency characterized by woody fibrin-rich pseudomembranes, recurrent ulceration, and progressive periodontal destruction CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 16-year-old female with hypothyroidism who presented with persistent gingival lesions and tooth mobility since early childhood after a mumps infection. Clinical and radiographic evaluation revealed generalized alveolar bone destruction. Histopathology confirmed LG with fibrinoid deposits. Hematological analysis showed markedly reduced plasminogen levels, measured

OBJECTIVES: Gingivitis manifests as redness, swelling, and bleeding of the gingiva but no loss of connective tissue attachment. It is usually painless and rarely leads to spontaneous bleeding, and most patients are unaware of the disease or are unable to recognize it. In children and adolescents, it is most often caused by plaque accumulation. The purpose of the following study was to determine the prevalence of gingivitis and its causes in children aged 3 to 7 years.
METHODS: Patients were classed in the following three age groups: 3-year-olds, 5-year-olds, and 7-year-olds, who were generall

Plasma cell gingivitis and cheilitis are diagnostic challenges for dental practitioners. To the best of the authors' knowledge, concomitant plasma cell gingivitis and plasma cell cheilitis in the same patient has not been reported in the dental literature, although these conditions have been reported separately (on lips and gingiva) several times. Underreporting of these coexisting clinical conditions may be attributed to a lack of awareness of both conditions and underperformance of comprehensive histopathological examinations. This article describes a case of plasma cell gingivitis with plas

Background: Desquamative gingivitis is a clinical manifestation often associated with various mucocutaneous disorders, characterized by red, painful, and friable gingiva. It is predominantly seen in middle-aged to elderly females and is typically linked to autoimmune conditions such as lichen planus, pemphigoid, and pemphigus, among others. Due to the chronic pain and difficulty in maintaining personal oral hygiene, professional care becomes crucial. Methods: This article explores the application of guided biofilm therapy as a novel, gentle approach for managing desquamative gingivitis, focusi

Periodontal diseases are widespread in children and adolescents. By the information of World Health Organization, 80% of children have different degrees of inflammatory periodontal diseases, that often develop from the ages of 10-11 years. Pathology of periodontal tissues is developed when there is a disproportional growth and development of tissue structure, as within the system, also in the systems and structures that provide entire organism, which itself supplements the development of periodontal diseases in juveniles. Harmonious development of children and adolescents is, on a certain leve

The presence of inflammatory infiltrates with B cells, specifically plasma cells, is the hallmark of periodontitis lesions. The composition of these infiltrates in various stages of homeostasis and disease development is not well documented. Human tissue biopsies from sites with gingival health (n = 29), gingivitis (n = 8), and periodontitis (n = 21) as well as gingival tissue after treated periodontitis (n = 6) were obtained and analyzed for their composition of B cell subsets. Ag specificity, Ig secretion, and expression of receptor activator of NF-κB ligand and granzyme B were performed. Al

A 66-year-old female presented with gum bleeding and soreness. Her medical history was significant for delayed wound healing, which appeared to cause blindness in her right eye. A gingival incisional biopsy revealed replacement of fibrous connective tissue by an amorphous and eosinophilic material. Direct immunofluorescent staining for antibodies was negative. After the differential diagnosis of ligneous gingivitis (LG) was rendered, the activity and antigenic level of plasminogen was tested and found to be significantly decreased. Partial improvement was observed within 1 year following a reg

OBJECTIVE: Desquamative gingivitis (DG) represents the gingival manifestation associated with several mucocutaneous disorders and systemic conditions. Little is known of whether or not DG could influence the onset or progression of plaque-related periodontitis. In this study, the potential impact of DG on plaque-related attachment loss and pocket formation has been evaluated.
METHODS: A cross-sectional evaluation of 12 patients with DG [eight oral lichen planus (OLP), four mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP)], never treated for DG lesions or plaque-related periodontitis, was carried out. Probing

Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) is a rare granulomatous necrotizing vasculitis of small vessels, affecting vascular structures having predilection for upper airways. If untreated WG can be lethal. WG is also known to cause oral mucosal lesions. We report a case of WG that was first diagnosed on oral gingival mucosa. A 51-year old woman was referred to a specialized dentist because of consistent irritative buccal gingival hyperplasia that did not react to conservative and microbial treatment. The lesion was biopsied and the diagnosis was suggestive for WG. Patient was further referred to the Depa

The aim of the present study was to compare quantitatively the distribution of dendritic cell subpopulations in chronic periodontitis and gingivitis. Fourteen biopsies from patients with chronic periodontitis and fifteen from patients with gingivitis were studied. An immunoperoxidase technique was used to quantify the number of Langerhans' cells (CD1a) and interstitial dendritic cells (factor XIIIa) in the oral and sulcular and junctional/pocket epithelia and in the lamina propria. A greater number of factor XIIIa+ dendritic cells in the lamina propria and CD1a+ dendritic cells in the oral epi

The inflammatory components of plaque induced gingivitis and chronic periodontitis can be managed effectively for the majority of patients with a plaque control program and non-surgical and/or surgical root debridement coupled with continued periodontal maintenance procedures. Some patients may need additional therapeutic procedures. All of the therapeutic modalities reviewed in this position paper may be utilized by the clinician at various times over the long-term management of the patient's periodontal condition.
