BACKGROUND: Three groups of iris prostheses can be distinguished for the surgical treatment of iris defects: (1) segmental iris implants, (2) combined iris diaphragm intraocular lenses (IOL) and (3) pure iris implants. Most iris reconstructions are accompanied by aphakia correction with secondary IOL implantation. Although the primary goal is to create a pupil and to improve glare perception, contrast sensitivity and visual acuity, the esthetic result is also a relevant component.

BACKGROUND: Keratoconus (KC) is usually a bilateral corneal ectatic disease. For significant asymmetric presentation (so called unilateral KC), the fellow eye has the mildest and earliest form of the disease, which is typically called forme fruste keratoconus. The aim of this study was to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of parameters derived from a Scheimpflug imaging system (Pentacam) as well as the changes in the quality of mesopic vision in the apparently normal fellow eye (forme fruste) to detect the earliest and most sensitive parameters.

BACKGROUND: Persistent and recurrent nummuli after epidemic keratokonjunktivitis (EKC) often lead to reduced visual acuity and increased glare. In spite of long-term topical steroid therapy nummuli often recur. We tried to treat persistent nummuli with phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK).

At the intersection of public health and violence is the glaring disparity surrounding racial disparities in gun violence. This mini-review summarizes what is known about racial disparities in gun violence, identifies some of the key theoretical frameworks advanced to explain the disparities and located them in an integrated cascading perspective, identifies several research gaps, and concludes by outlining a series of future research issues.

Herein we describe 2 cases of persistent mydriasis after gonioscopy-assisted transluminal trabeculotomy for open angle glaucoma. Both surgeries were uneventful, but the patients experienced postoperative hyphema and intraocular pressure elevation. They then developed persistent fixed and dilated pupils resistant to pilocarpine that led to intolerable photosensitivity and glare. An iris cerclage pupilloplasty was performed with adequate relief of symptoms in one case.
