OBJECTIVE: Positive volume-outcome relationships exist for diseases treated with technically complex surgery. Contemporary patterns of oropharyngeal cancer surgery by hospital and surgeon volume are poorly defined.
METHODS: The Maryland Health Service Cost Review Commission database was queried for hospital and surgeon oropharyngeal cancer surgical case volumes from 1990 to 2009.
RESULTS: Overall, 1,534 oropharyngeal cancer surgeries were performed by 238 surgeons at 41 hospitals. Cases performed by high-volume surgeons increased from 18.9% in 1990 to 1999 to 24.8% in 2000 to 2009 (odds rati

The appropriate tongue reconstruction method is critical for better functional outcomes. The aim of this study was to determine the optimal reconstructive method for restoring postoperative function based on the extent of resection. We retrospectively reviewed 43 patients with lateral oral tongue cancer who underwent glossectomy between January 2010 and October 2014. Tongue mobility, articulation, verbal diadochokinesis, speech intelligibility and swallowing outcomes were assessed 2-3 years postoperative and were analyzed according to resected tongue volume and the method of reconstruction. PURPOSE: Acoustic analysis is an objective and quantitative method in diagnosing speech disorders and evaluating treatment efficacy. Although many reports have used acoustic analysis for oral cancer patients, few studies have focused on the extent of tongue resection. The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of acoustic analysis in the assessment of postoperative speech impairment in oral cancer patients.
METHODS: Postoperative speech data as well as Speech Handicap Index (SHI) and 5-point speech intelligibility scale were collected from 65 patients including 31 cases of oral canc

BACKGROUND: The treatment of tongue tumors includes different surgical procedures ranging from a simple mucosal resection to complex combined resection depending on the tumor stage and size. In 2019 we reported an international glossectomy classification with the purpose of standardizing all the different types of surgical procedures adopted for tongue cancer.
METHODS: The present communication aims at providing further insight into the glossectomy classification. More specifically, it is intended to better specify the indications to glossectomy type IIIA and B in selected tongue cancers, wit

OBJECTIVE: Assessment of tongue function following tongue reconstruction is important to evaluate patient status. To assess tongue function in patients who had undergone tongue reconstruction, the surgical team used a simple, hand-held tongue pressure measurement device to measure tongue power.
METHODS: Tongue power of 30 patients (25 males, 5 females; average age: 53.6±15.0 years) was calculated using a hand-held tongue pressure measurement device, six months postoperation. The defects were classified into minimal glossectomy (MG) (n=8), near-half partial glossectomy of the mobile tongue (PG

The purpose of the present case study was to determine the long-term impact of partial glossectomy (using the keyhole technique) on overall speech intelligibility and articulation in a Dutch-speaking child with Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS). Furthermore the present study is meant as a contribution to the further delineation of the phonation, resonance, articulation and language characteristics and oral behaviour in a child with BWS. Detailed information on the speech and language characteristics of children with BWS may lead to better guidance of pediatric management programs. The child's

Results of 101 salvage glossectomies, after unsuccessful treatment of cancer of tongue by radiotherapy, showed a 3-year survival of 39% and a 5-year of 31%. Carcinologic failures represented 81% of causes of death: 17% due to distant metastases, 6% to a second focus and principally 32% to local recurrence. Local recurrence varied as a function of tumor size but also of site and type of surgical treatment. Tumors of the mobile tongue have a relatively good prognosis, even when the total organ is involved, with attachment to floor of mouth if an anterior transverse glossectomy is performed. Inve

INTRODUCTION: A reduction glossectomy may be complicated by tongue and mouth floor edema and extend the recovery time for a normal tongue function. We performed reduction glossectomy using Ultracision(®), an ultrasonic vibrating device, so as to limit these complications.
TECHNICAL NOTE: We performed a keyhole glossoplasty under general anesthesia. The initial tongue incision was performed with a cold scalpel, then the glossectomy was continued with Ultracision(®) only. We also used CURVED SHEARS(®). We evaluated our preliminary results with 3 patients presenting with Wiedemann-Beckwith syndr

We describe our experience in tongue reconstruction using the transverse gracilis myocutaneous (TMG) free flap after major demolitive surgery for advanced cancer. This technique was used in 10 patients: seven underwent total glossectomy and three partial glossectomy. In eight patients we performed motor reinnervation attempting to maintain muscular trophism and gain long-term volumetric stability. The follow-up period ranged from 6 to 28 months. The overall flap survival was 100%. Nine out of 10 patients resumed oral intake. Our preliminary experience shows that this flap is a good reconstruct

There are ethical dilemmas in managing head and neck cancers during pregnancy. Diagnostic and treatment modalities need to be carefully determined. We herein describe 3 cases of tongue cancer during pregnancy. The details of the management would contribute to the daily practices for head and neck cancers. All three patients were Japanese female patients, two of them were 29 years old and one was 26 years old. All patients were admitted to the Nippon Medical School Hospital during pregnancy, complaining of oral pain and/or discomfort. Case 1 was diagnosed as tongue cancer stage T3N0M0, however,

Surgical treatment of tongue cancer can lead to extended defunctionalization, depending upon the size and localisation of the defect. Great problems of swallowing arise after total glossectomy or extensive resections of the base of the tongue even after reconstruction with myocutaneous island flaps or free flaps. We developed a neuromuscular island flap derived from the infrahyoidal musculature to reconstruct a total tongue or large defects of the tongue base. This fasciomuscular flap is formed by the M. sternothyroideus, M. sternohyoideus and the upper part of the M. omohyoideus. The axial bl
