Seventy-three rabbits (2 to 3 kg in weight) were studied during a control period and after receiving 50% glycerol (G) or mercuric chloride (M) with or without indomethacin (I) (controls received the diluent used for I). Plasma creatinine, plasma renin activity, blood pressure, sodium and potassium concentrations, hematocrit value, urinary output, body wt and histologic appearance of the kidney were determined. Glycerol monolaurate (GML) is a natural surfactant with antimicrobial properties. At ∼0.3 mM, both GML and its component lauric acid were bactericidal for antibiotic-resistant Staphylococcus aureus biofilms. With the use of MICs of antibiotics obtained from planktonic cells, GML and lauric acid acted synergistically with gentamicin and streptomycin, but not ampicillin or vancomycin, to eliminate detectable viable biofilm bacteria. Images of GML-treated biofilms suggested that GML may facilitate antibiotic interaction with matrix-embedded bacteria.

Citrobacter amalonaticus Y19 (Y19) was isolated because of its ability for carbon monoxide-dependent hydrogen production (water-gas shift reaction). The effect of topical glycerol injection into the rat trigeminal nerves was investigated histologically and immunohistochemically. Anhydrous glycerol was injected into the preganglionic portion of the trigeminal nerves via a ventral approach. The effects of glycerol and mannitol on partial oxygen pressure (PO2) in perilymph were studied with a polarographic technique in the guinea pig cochlea.
