A Comparison of Sports and Exercise Medicine Training for Physicians Across Five English-Speaking Countries.

Sports and Exercise Medicine (SEM) has rapidly evolved into a formally recognised and important medical specialty that supports population health and tackles chronic disease burden in addition to injury prevention and optimisation of athletic performance. The specialty's establishment has adopted different timelines globally, and training pathways differ markedly across English-speaking countries, despite common clinical goals. In this review, we aim to provide a comparison between the postgraduate training pathways for physicians in SEM across five English-speaking countries highlighting the

State Advisory Boards and the Politics of Expertise in US Public Health.

This essay examines the evolving relationship between public health expertise and politics in the United States, focusing on the emergence of state advisory boards during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. While public health decision-making has always involved political trade-offs, recent developments reflect a more direct politicization of federal institutions, including changes in advisory committee composition, constraints on scientific autonomy, and declining public trust. In response, several states have created independent advisory bodies to review federal guidance and guide vaccination p

Critical Success Factors for Intersectoral Collaboration: Homelessness and COVID-19 - Case Studies and Learnings from an Australian City.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic disproportionally impacted people experiencing homelessness, including people sleeping rough, people in temporary accommodation and those living in boarding houses. This paper reports on intersectoral responses across six health and social care agencies in Inner Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Prior to the pandemic the six agencies had established an Intersectoral Homelessness Health Strategy (IHHS), in recognition of the need for intersectoral collaboration to address the complex health needs of people experiencing homelessness. DESCRIPTION: The govern

Air Pollution, Environmental Violation Risk, and the Cost of Debt: Evidence from China.

Although a firm's exposure to air pollution-related risk has become an important factor that creditors cannot ignore in the procedure of lending decision making with the aggravation of air pollution, empirical evidence on whether and how air pollution affects the cost of debt has been relatively scarce. Employing a series of Chinese listed firms from the main board of the Shanghai and Shenzhen Stock Exchanges covering 2014 to 2018, our research responds to this research gap by exploring how air pollution-induced environmental violation risk affects the cost of debt by constructing an assessmen

MSPEECH (multiple sclerosis monitoring through speech interaction in clinic and at home): a Living Lab study protocol for co-created, speech-based digital biomarkers in multiple sclerosis.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) has heterogeneous trajectories and fluctuating symptoms that are often not captured by intermittent clinic assessments. Digital health tools can provide frequent, low-burden measurements, but clinical translation requires sustained engagement, interpretability, robust governance, and workflow integration. MSPEECH is a single-center, prospective, non-interventional Living Lab study at the MS Center Dresden conducted with ki:elements GmbH to co-create and iteratively refine the Mili smartphone/tablet speech assessment app. The protocol comprises three demonstrator cycles

Distribution and Specialties of Broadly Versus Narrowly Defined Public Health Nurses Working in Government Settings in the United States, 2022.

Objectives. To estimate the size of the US governmental public health nurse (PHN) workforce by setting and specialty, including those working outside of health departments. Methods. We used 2022 data from the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, representing 2846 registered nurses (RNs) in almost all states, with weights applied. We examined "setting" and "specialty" of PHNs according to broad and more restricted definitions. Results. Using a broad definition, PHNs in government settings made up 3.7% of the RN workforce, and 1.8% when specialty areas were narrowly defined. These percen

Regulating the Midwife: Power, Public Health, and the Decline of Traditional Midwifery in West Virginia, 1881-1929.

This historical policy analysis centers on how early maternal and child health (MCH) efforts affected the practice and decline of traditional midwifery in West Virginia. From the emergence of official government action in MCH with the establishment of the West Virginia Board of Health in 1881, through the federal Sheppard-Towner Maternity and Infancy Act of the 1920s-the nation's first large-scale attempt at making the provision and improvement of MCH issues a national priority-West Virginia transformed childbirth practices by increasingly regulating, professionalizing, and ultimately marginal

The Formation of the Premedical Course in Korea and the Instability of the Premedical Education Regime, 1945-1979.

This article examines the formation and contested governance of Korea's two-year premedical course from 1945 to 1979. Drawing on records from the U.S. military government and the University of Minnesota as well as university documents, medical journals, newspapers, and student publications, it asks why this standard route into medical training repeatedly faced proposals for transfer, abolition, and integration. Focusing on Seoul National University (SNU), the article also considers variations by institutional type and region. The functionally hybrid system combined the post-Flexnerian American

Mapping digital health maturity models and accreditation-linked standards: a scoping review to position the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (NABH) digital health standards of India.

BACKGROUND: Digital transformation in healthcare is guided globally by digital health maturity models and accreditation-linked standards. In India, the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (NABH) introduced landmark Digital Health Standards (DHS) for hospitals (2025 draft). This provides a national framework, but its positioning within the complex global landscape is unclear, making it challenging for stakeholders to benchmark progress and plan strategically. OBJECTIVES: The primary objective was to map the features, domains, and assessment approaches of prominent

Artificial Intelligence Readiness in Emergency Medicine: Expert Consensus Opinion for Preparing the Workforce.

The rapid integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into emergency department workflows has outpaced clinician training, vendor evaluation infrastructure, and specialty-wide governance. Emergency physicians increasingly encounter AI tools spanning triage, imaging, clinical decision support, documentation, and operations, yet most lack the foundational skills to critically evaluate or safely oversee these products. Without a unified framework, departments struggle to distinguish safe tools from risky ones, and no national standard exists to guide education, vetting, or implementation. This ex

Changes in the Distribution of General Physicians in Korea During the 2024-2025 Medical Crisis: A Descriptive Analysis Using Nationwide HIRA Data.

In February 2024, approximately 90% of resident physicians in Republic of Korea (= South Korea) collectively resigned from training hospitals in protest of the government's plan to reform healthcare system, creating an abrupt and nationwide supply shock in the physician workforce. Using publicly available Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service data across eight timepoints (December 2022-March 2026), we describe how this shock reshaped the distribution of general physicians-licensed physicians without specialty board certification-across institution types, regions, urban-rural areas, an

Is anyone listening? Children's hearing services in England need a radical overhaul.

Hearing loss is a common congenital anomaly and there is clear evidence of the benefits of early diagnosis and then treatment. For maximum positive impact, the diagnosis needs to be made as early as possible, ideally in the first months of life-this is the rationale for the national newborn hearing screening programme in the UK. When diagnosis and treatment do not occur early, the opportunity for the child to develop spoken language is slowly diminished over time with potentially devastating consequences.A national review into children's hearing services in England was commissioned by the Secr

Palliative care: pathway in primary health care in Brazil.

In 2022, an important international report was published on the "value of death" not only in the field of health, but in relation to human societies in general. This report proposed to reimagine systems related to end of life in which death is understood not only as a physiological event but also as a relational and spiritual phenomenon with a value of its own and inseparable from life. It identifies the low priority given by most governments worldwide to the issue of alleviating suffering and supporting bereavement, evidenced by the low investment in palliative care. At the same time, we are

Influence of the First Wave of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Cancer Care in a German Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Introduction: During the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the German government implemented legal restrictions to avoid the overloading of intensive care units by patients with COVID-19. The influence of these effects on diagnosis and treatment of cancer in Germany is largely unknown. Methods: To evaluate the effect of the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic on tumor board presentations in a high-volume tertiary referral center (the German Comprehensive Cancer Center NCT/UCC Dresden), we compared the number of presentations of gastrointestinal tumors stratified by tumor entity, tum

Estimating the Size of the Los Angeles County Jail Mental Health Population Appropriate for Release into Community Services.

In 2015, the Office of Diversion and Reentry Division (ODR), an internal department of the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, was created to redirect individuals with serious mental illness from the criminal justice system. Part of ODR's mission is to identify individuals currently incarcerated in a Los Angeles County jail who are experiencing a serious mental health disorder and, to the extent practical, provide them with appropriate community-based care with the goals of reducing recidivism and improving health outcomes. Such redirection from the traditional criminal justice p
