NCAA Division I American football players with sickle cell trait have altered hematological responses and hydration status.

Sickle cell trait (SCT) is a risk factor of collapse and sudden death in athletes. We conducted a longitudinal study to determine the hematological responses and hydration status in NCAA Division I American football players with SCT. The study took place over 2 years with 6 SCT and 6 position-matched controls (CON) in year 1; and 4 SCT and 4 CON in year 2. In year 2, three of the four SCT players were recruited and re-enrolled with new position-matched controls (total sample data = 10 SCT and 10 CON). Blood samples were taken at three visits: pre-camp, post-camp, and post-season to examine hem

Postural alterations and pulmonary function of mouth-breathing children.

UNLABELLED: Mouth-breathing children have changes in their stomatognathic system, which result in head projection, stress increase in the scapular belt muscles and postural adaptations. Although thoracic shape and posture can influence ventilatory dynamics, we didn't find studies addressing pulmonary function of mouth-breathing children. AIMS: this study aimed at analyzing the posture of mouth-breathing children, and studying the existence of correlations between posture and pulmonary volumes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: prospective, observational and cross-sectional study, where the posture and p

Synergy Analysis of Back Muscle Activities in Patients With Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis Based on High-Density Electromyogram.

OBJECTIVE: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a common structural spinal deformity and is typically associated with altered muscle properties. However, it is still unclear how muscle activities and the underlying neuromuscular control are changed in the entire scoliotic zone, restricting the corresponding pathology investigation and treatment enhancements. METHODS: High-density electromyogram (HD-EMG) was utilized to explore the neuromuscular synergy of back muscle activities. For each of ten AIS patients and ten healthy subjects for comparison, an HD-EMG array was placed on their back

Formation of multiscale structures in a self-gravitating dusty plasma with matter current.

I investigate the formation of multiscale magnetic-field structures in a rotating, self-gravitating dusty plasma comprising electrons, ions, and charged dust grains. By incorporating the gravitomagnetic field, arising from mass currents in rotating astrophysical objects, into a three-component fluid model, I derive a triple-curl Beltrami equilibrium characterized by three distinct spatial scales. These scales emerge from the eigenvalues of a governing cubic equation, reflecting the combined effects of self-gravitation, rotation, and electromagnetic interactions. The model provides novel insigh

Mental representation of space in vestibular patients with otolithic or rotatory vertigo.

In previous studies, we had observed that the occurrence of geometric illusions was reduced when healthy observers were tilted relative to gravity or placed in microgravity. We hypothesized that the alteration of the gravitational (otolith) input was responsible for this change, presumably because of a connection between vestibular and visual-spatial cognitive functions. In this study, we repeated these experiments in vestibular patients who presented signs of otolith disorders. In agreement with the microgravity data, geometric illusions based on horizontal, vertical, and oblique lines were l

Effect of chronic centrifugation on the cross-sectional shape of long bones in dogs.

Alterations in cross-sectional shape at midlength of the femur, tibia, and humerus of 16 male Beagle dogs exposed for 6 months to either 2.1 g or 2.6 g by centrifugation were analysed by the area moment correlation coefficient, as defined by AMTMANN and POTULSKI (1981). As shown by variance analysis the cross-sectional shape differences between bones are highly significant, while the treatment effects are only significant at a 5% level. While the femur and the tibia are almost alike in the shape of their whole sectional area and cortical surface, they differ in the shape of their marrow cavity

Dynamic sensory integration and visual reliance modulation during postural control in older adults with chronic low back pain.

BACKGROUND: Chronic low back pain (LBP) has been reported with altered postural control, yet the trial-specific sensory adaptations underlying this disruption remain unclear. PURPOSE: This study was conducted to compare differences in equilibrium indices, sensory integration, and center of gravity (COG) sway regulation between individuals with and without LBP during repeated Sensory Organization Test (SOT) trials. METHODS: Thirty-four adults with LBP and 42 control participants completed three trials across six SOT conditions. The study employed a comparative repeated-measures design to exam

Altered platelet indices as potential markers of severe and complicated malaria caused by Plasmodium vivax: a cross-sectional descriptive study.

BACKGROUND: This study described altered platelet indices in patients with acute malaria caused by Plasmodium vivax and determined whether these alterations are associated with warning signs of severe and complicated malaria. METHODS: A total of 186 patients attending the Malaria Clinic at the University Hospital from the Federal University of Mato Grosso, Brazil, between 2008 and 2013 were included in this study. After parasitological confirmation of exclusive infection by P. vivax, blood cell counts and platelet indices were determined. Disease gravity was evaluated on the basis of classic

Knee loads in the standard and recumbent cycling positions.

The recumbent cycling position (RCP) has become increasingly popular in recent years as a mode of exercise and rehabilitation. However, subtle, but important, differences are expected to exist between the RCP and the standard, upright cycling position (SCP). The differences are due primarily to the altered orientation of the rider's lower extremities relative to gravity. In order to determine if one cycling position may be preferential to another for certain types of rehabilitation, knee loads from a planar, inverse-dynamics model were examined. Nineteen recreational cyclists (24.6 +/- 4.2 yrs

Microgravity and Lymphatics: Why Space Programs Need Lymphedema Physiology Specialists.

Background: The resurgence of space travel in the recent years, both through formally trained astronauts on the International Space Station and the civilian space race to send astrocivilians to Low Earth Orbit and beyond, beckons the need to understand the role of the lymphatic system and role of endothelial glycocalyx when subjected to gravitational alterations. Methods and Results: A comprehensive narrative review of the literature explores a call to action for research and countermeasure development to support the health and well-being of humans subjected to space flight, with particular at

Pediatric Nephrotic Syndrome: Pharmacologic and Nutrition Management.

Nephrotic syndrome is a common kidney disease during childhood that is characterized by alterations in glomerular filtration and leads to protein, fluid, and nutrient loss in the urine. Most patients experience peripheral, gravity-dependent edema; however, serious cases exhibit anasarca and ascites. Many long-term complications of the disease exist due to the underlying pathology and the therapies used for treatment, including metabolic bone disease, micronutrient deficiencies, and hyperlipidemia. Pharmacologic and nutrition interventions are key to appropriate management. Fluid and sodium res

Regional changes in muscle mass and strength following 20 days of bed rest, and the effects on orthostatic tolerance capacity in young subjects.

To this day, many studies have suggested that prolonged bed rest (BR) affects on muscle mass and strength not only in gravity muscles but also in ungravity muscles. However, it is still unclear whether the decrease in regional muscle strength after BR is due to the alterations in the corresponding muscle mass, or not. On the other hand, if BR decreases the mass of antigravity muscles (UGM) as well as muscle strength and then increases tissue compliance of the antigravity muscles, orthostatic tolerance capacity will be decreased by the reduction in cardiac output (CO) in spite of the increase i

Development of Upright Computed Tomography With Area Detector for Whole-Body Scans: Phantom Study, Efficacy on Workflow, Effect of Gravity on Human Body, and Potential Clinical Impact.

OBJECTIVES: Multiple human systems are greatly affected by gravity, and many disease symptoms are altered by posture. However, the overall anatomical structure and pathophysiology of the human body while standing has not been thoroughly analyzed due to the limitations of various upright imaging modalities, such as low spatial resolution, low contrast resolution, limited scan range, or long examination time. Recently, we developed an upright computed tomography (CT), which enables whole-torso cross-sectional scanning with 3-dimensional acquisition within 15 seconds. The purpose of this study wa

Novel In-line Filter Reduces ABO Circulating Antibodies in Whole Blood.

INTRODUCTION: Low titer O whole blood (LTOWB) is the preferred blood product for resuscitation after hemorrhage in civilian and military trauma. The low titer requirement minimizes the risk of hemolytic transfusion reactions caused by donor ABO antibodies. However, up to 25% of otherwise eligible donors are excluded because of high antibody titers. A novel in-line filter has been developed to bind and remove donor antibodies from whole blood during infusion. We evaluated the efficacy of this filter across multiple infusion methods and assessed its effects on whole blood composition and coagula

Cerebral Malaria: An Unusual Cause of Central Diabetes Insipidus.

Central diabetes insipidus is an uncommon feature of malaria. A previously healthy 72-year-old man presented with fever, rigors, and altered mental status after a recent trip to Liberia, a country known for endemic falciparum malaria. Investigations confirmed plasmodium falciparum parasitemia. Within one week after admission, the serum sodium rose to 166 mEq/L and the urine output increased to 7 liters/day. Other labs were notable for a high serum osmolality, low urine osmolality, and low urine specific gravity. The hypernatremia did not respond to hypotonic fluids. Diabetes insipidus was susp

Space flight: a challenge for normal bone homeostasis.

Space flight results in loss of bone mass, especially in weight-bearing bones, a condition that is suggested to be similar to disuse osteoporosis. As models to elucidate the underlying mechanism, bed rest studies were performed and bone metabolism in the rat both during space flight and during hindlimb unloading was investigated. The general picture is that bone formation is decreased partly as a result of reduced osteoblast function, whereas bone resorption is unaltered or increased. This deficit in bone mass can be replaced, but the time span for restoration exceeds the period of unloading.
