Disease burden and unmet medical need in severe hemophilia in Greece: insights from clinicians and patients.

OBJECTIVES: Hemophilia is the most common severe hereditary bleeding disorder, with significant unmet needs in its management. This study aimed to assess the burden and unmet needs of severe hemophilia in Greece from a clinician and patient perspective. METHODS: Two independent Delphi panels were conducted: one comprising six clinical experts from all specialized hemophilia centers across Greece, and another including 15 patients-members of the Greek Hemophilia Society with severe hemophilia. Following a targeted literature review, two structured Delphi questionnaires were developed with evid

Bacteriophages as Therapeutic and Prophylactic Means: Summary of the Soviet and Post Soviet Experiences.

Bacteriophage (from 'bacteria' and Greek φαγεῖν phagein "to devour" or bacterial eaters) are bacterial viruses that infect and kill bacteria. Bacteriophages (shortly "phages") are among the most common and diverse entities in the biosphere. The estimated number of phages on earth is about 1032. Bacteriophages are often isolated from environmental sources, such as water samples, etc. Felix d'Herelle, one of the discoverers of bacteriophages, was the one who suggested them for therapy of human and animal bacterial infections. This idea was very popular in the world until the advent of antibiotic

The international initiatives of the collaboration between the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki School of Medicine, the Panhellenic Medical Association and the World Psychiatric Association, concerning mental health during the COVID-19 outbreak.

During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, all European countries were hit, but mortality rates were heterogenous, with some countries being hit very hard, while others including Greece had a much lower death rate during the first wave of spring 2020. The ultra-fast application of measures was probably the reason of this outstanding success. This outbreak is expected to trigger feelings of fear, worry, and stress, as responses to an extreme threat for the community and the individual. In addition, changes in social behavior, as well as in working conditions, daily habits and rout

Gonorrhea, a current disease with ancient roots: from the remedies of the past to future perspectives.

Gonorrhea can be traced back to the earliest records of the human race even if Albert Neisser first described gonococcus in 1879. The Romans, Jews and Arabs all have documents referring to gonorrhea and each society had their own description of symptoms and treatment. The Roman physician Galen in 130 AD described the disease as an "involuntary escape of semen". The word itself derives from the Greek, meaning "the flow of seed". Gonorrhea is currently the second most commonly notifiable sexually transmitted infection (STI) reported to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), second onl

[History of opium poppy and morphine].

Opium has been known for millennia to relieve pain and its use for surgical analgesia has been recorded for several centuries. The Sumerian clay tablet (about 2100 BC) is considered to be the world's oldest recorded list of medical prescriptions. It is believed by some scholars that the opium poppy is referred to on the tablet. Some objects from the ancient Greek Minoan culture may also suggest the knowledge of the poppy. A goddess from about 1500 BC shows her hair adorned probably with poppy-capsules and her closed eyes disclose sedation. Also juglets probably imitating the poppy-capsules wer

Prevalence and geographic variation of abdominal obesity in 7- and 9-year-old children in Greece; World Health Organization Childhood Obesity Surveillance Initiative 2010.

BACKGROUND: In children, abdominal obesity is a better predictor of the presence of cardiovascular risk factors than body mass index (BMI)-defined obesity. We aimed to evaluate the prevalence of abdominal obesity in the Greek pediatric population and to assess the impact of residence on the prevalence of both BMI-defined and abdominal obesity. METHODS: In the context of the Childhood Obesity Surveillance Initiative of the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Europe, a national representative sample of 7.0-7.9 and 9.0-9.9-year-old children was evaluated (n = 2,531 and 2,700, res

Aberrant face and gaze habituation in fragile x syndrome.

Omphacinon, the oil from unripe olives (Olea europaea L.), occupied a privileged position in Mediterranean materia medica from the Hellenistic period to the late Middle Ages. Sources in Greek, Latin, Aramaic, Hebrew, and Arabic record its use in oral hygiene, dermatological care, antiperspirant preparations, and as a base for medicinal ointments and perfumes; Dioscorides identifies it as the oil best suited to medicinal use. Despite cost and lower yield, ancient practitioners preferred unripe fruit. A preference persisting across more than a millennium and across different medical traditions r

Cost-Effectiveness of Radiotherapy and Its Impact on Patient Quality of Life: A Real-World Cost Utility Analysis in Greece.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to estimate the economic burden of radiotherapy (RT) from the perspectives of payers, the healthcare system, patients, and society, and to assess associated quality-of-life (QoL) outcomes. The analysis examined direct medical and non-medical costs, as well as QoL, before, during, and up to six months after RT. Given the inclusion of multiple cancer types, the study reflects a heterogeneous real-world population. An exploratory comparison across RT techniques was also conducted to provide contextual economic insight. METHODS: This analysis included data fr

Work Satisfaction and Post-traumatic Stress Disorder in Pediatric Healthcare Workers During the COVID-19 Pandemic Era.

Background/objectives The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly affected the world, influencing various aspects beyond health-related issues. However, pediatric healthcare professionals experiencing anxiety due to COVID-19 exhibited elevated levels of work-related stress, were more likely to contemplate leaving their positions, and frequently reported low job satisfaction and higher rates of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. The purpose of this study is to assess job satisfaction and work-related psychological trauma leading to PTSD in pediatric healthcare workers in Greek hospital

Prognostic Value of Programmed Cell Death Ligand 1 (PD-L1) Expression in Patients With Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma: A Retrospective Biomarker Study.

BACKGROUND: Programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression is a well-established prerequisite for the use of immune checkpoint inhibitors and is increasingly recognized as a prognostic biomarker in various malignancies. However, its prognostic significance in thyroid cancer, particularly papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), remains largely unexplored and somewhat controversial, with findings to date being limited and inconsistent. The aim of this study was to evaluate PD-L1 expression in a well-characterized cohort of patients with PTC and assess its association with key clinicopathological f

Active Surveillance for Low- and Favourable Intermediate-Risk Prostate Cancer: A Single-Centre Cohort Study on Discontinuation Rates and Quality-of-Life Outcomes.

Background: Active surveillance (AS) represents a cornerstone of personalized medicine in uro-oncology, offering an individualized management strategy for low- and selected favourable intermediate-risk prostate cancer that aligns treatment intensity with patient-specific risk profiles; however, real-world adherence data from southern European academic centres remain scarce. This study aimed to evaluate AS discontinuation rates, reasons for transition to active treatment, and quality of life (QoL) in a single-centre Greek university hospital cohort. Methods: This is an observational retropectiv

The impact of COVID-19 pandemic on elderly with neurocognitive disorders.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic outburst, numerous studies have reported on the holistic approach of the disease, which has negative consequences on physical and mental health as well as short- and long-term effects on cognition, independently of age. The context of the pandemic brought significant demands on public health systems, leading to restrictive measures against coronavirus expansion (quarantines, physical distancing policies, etc.). Such measures are reported to increase perceived loneliness and helplessness and may exacerbate feelings of emotional distress.1 Elderly diagnosed with neuro

Obesity, the deadly quartet and the contribution of the neglected daily organ rest - a new dimension of un-health and its prevention.

The "deadly quartet": excessive weight, hypertension, impaired glucose homeostasis, and atherogenic dyslipidemia constitute a greater threat to health than the added effects of smoking and alcohol abuse. It is strongly associated with unrestricted consumption of processed, refined foods. Recent observations from experience in South East Asia shows that the interval between lifestyle changes and associated change in disease pattern is shorter than earlier believed. Recent experience from obesity studies in Africa demonstrates not only dramatic changes in health but also large social consequence

The plague of Athens: epidemiology and paleopathology.

In 430 BC, a plague struck the city of Athens, which was then under siege by Sparta during the Peloponnesian War (431-404 BC). In the next 3 years, most of the population was infected, and perhaps as many as 75,000 to 100,000 people, 25% of the city's population, died. The Athenian general and historian Thucydides left an eye-witness account of this plague and a detailed description to allow future generations to identify the disease should it break out again. Because of the importance of Thucydides and Athens in Western history and culture, the Plague of Athens has taken a prominent position

A Data-Driven Approach for Estimating Type 2 Diabetes-Related Costs in Greece.

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) constitutes a major health problem, reaching alarming rates over the last decades, especially due to contemporary lifestyle and associated obesogenic environments, as well as the aging population. Diabetes not only causes social consequences but also leads to increasing healthcare costs, posing a significant challenge for the health system. This paper applies a five-step approach for estimating T2D-related costs in Greece. The approach initially estimates the T2D-related ICD10 prevalence and the target population. Next it applies the appropriate therapeutic protocols to i

Psychedelics: Alternative and Potential Therapeutic Options for Treating Mood and Anxiety Disorders.

The word "psychedelic" (psyche (i.e., the mind or soul) and delos (i.e., to show)) has Greek origin and was first coined by psychiatrist Humphry Osmond in 1956, who had been conducting research on lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) at the time. Psychedelic drugs such as N,N-DMT/DMT (N,N-dimethyltryptamine), 5-MeO-DMT (5-methoxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine), LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide), MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine) and psilocybin have had significant value as an entheogen in spiritual, religious (shamanic) and sociocultural rituals in Central and South American cultures for thousands

Knowledge and Attitudes of Teachers and School Professionals Toward Epilepsy: Results of an Educational Program in Greece.

BACKGROUND: The prejudices that accompany epilepsy in the school environment have negative consequences in the lives of children with epilepsy, such as stigmatization and marginalization. Many studies worldwide highlight that a significant percentage of teachers do not have the necessary knowledge about epilepsy and do not know what to do during an epileptic seizure. For this reason, the existence of educational programs for epilepsy among schoolteachers is suggested by these studies as a way forward. This urgent need to educate teachers about epilepsy has led several studies to focus on the p

Atorvastatin efficacy in the primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular events.

Atorvastatin has been extensively studied in the primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular events, and may have some clinical advantages over various other statins in these respects. The principal primary prevention study of atorvastatin, ASCOT-LLA (Anglo-Scandinavian Cardiac Outcomes Trial-Lipid Lowering Arm), revealed that atorvastatin reduced the relative risk of primary coronary heart disease (CHD) events by 36% (p = 0.0005) compared with placebo in patients with hypertension. Much published data confirm the secondary preventive benefits of atorvastatin in various clinical setting

Climate changes, environment and infection: facts, scenarios and growing awareness from the public health community within Europe.

Climate change is a current global concern and, despite continuing controversy about the extent and importance of causes and of its effects, it seems likely that it will affect the incidence and prevalence of both residual and imported infections in Europe. Climate affects mainly the range of infectious diseases, whereas weather affects the timing and intensity of outbreaks. Climate change scenarios include a change distribution of infectious diseases with warming and changes in outbreaks associated with weather extremes. The largest health impact from climate change for Europe doesn't come fr
