Atypical parkinsonism is extremely frequent in Guadeloupe and may have an environmental cause. One-half of the patients with this tauopathy have dopa-resistant parkinsonism, tremor, subcortical dementia and abnormal eye movements suggestive of progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). They also have hallucinations, dysautonomia, which are not characteristic of PSP. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the incidence of inflammatory bowel disease in the French West Indies.
METHODS: From January 1st 1997 to December 31st 1999 all patients observed with clinical symptoms suggestive of inflammatory bowel disease attending gastroenterologists practicing in Guadeloupe and Martinique were included. Patients were interviewed with a standard questionnaire to record data used by an expert to establish the final diagnosis of definite, probable or possible Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, unclassifiable chronic colitis or acute colitis, according to the EPIMAD registry.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) emerged in the French West Indies (Martinique and Guadeloupe) at the beginning of the 1990s with an incidence for the period 1992-2007 of 1.27/100,000 (95% CI, 1.16-1.38). Its incidence, which is continuously increasing, reached 2.27/100,000 (95% CI, 1.92-2.62) in Martinique for the period 2002-07. Neuromyelitis optica (NMO), in contrast, has a stable incidence of 0.19/100,000 (95% CI, 0.15-0.23) resulting in a gradual increase in the MS/NMO ratio, which was 8.35 for the period 2002-07. MS initially affected the female population with a female/male incidence ratio of 8.

BACKGROUND: An association with cancer is described in 17-32% of cases of dermatomyositis (DM) and in 5-16% of cases of anti-synthetase syndrome (ASS). The literature contains very few studies involving Afro-Caribbean patients with DM or ASS. The aim of our retrospective study was to determine the prevalence of cancer in a series of patients with DM or ASS at the University Hospital of Pointe-à-Pitre between 1st January 2000 and 31st December 2012. The secondary objective was to review the clinical and laboratory features as well as the course of DM/ASS in these patients.
