First record of native entomopathogenic nematodes from Montana agroecosystems.

A total of 30 different agricultural fields in the Golden Triangle Region of Montana, USA were surveyed, and 150 soil samples were evaluated for the presence of entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs). The authors isolated EPNs from 10% of the collected samples. The recovered isolates were identified as Steinernema feltiae and Heterorhabditis bacteriophora by using morphological and molecular analysis. Steinernema feltiae was found from two fields, Kalispell (S. feltiae 1) and Choteau (S. feltiae 2). Steinernema feltiae (1 and 2) differed significantly from each other in terms of morphological chara

A new role for androgen in testicular descent: permitting gubernacular cell proliferation in response to the neuropeptide, calcitonin gene-related peptide.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Cell proliferation at the gubernacular tip increases in response to exogenous calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) during migration into the scrotum. Calcitonin gene-related peptide is contained in the masculinized sensory branches of the genitofemoral nerve. We tested the independent effects of chemical sensory nerve disruption and prenatal androgen blockade on the in vitro gubernacular proliferative response to CGRP. METHODS: Neonatal Sprague-Dawley rats were injected with capsaicin, a sensory nerve toxin, and gubernacula dissected 2 days later (D2). Sprague-Dawley dam

Spigelian hernia and cryptorchidism syndrome: open spigelian hernia repair and laparoscopic one-stage orchiopexy for ectopic testis.

Spigelian hernia and cryptorchidism syndrome in children is increasingly reported in the literature. A variety of phenotypes have been reported, so diagnostic approaches and operative techniques remain poorly defined. The case of an infant male who presented with a left spigelian hernia and ipsilateral cryptorchidism who was initially misdiagnosed with an ectopic inguinal testis is presented. He underwent diagnostic laparoscopy which revealed an ectopic left testis within the spigelian hernia defect with a gubernaculum present. Echinocephalus caniculus n. sp. (Nematoda: Gnathostomatidae Railliet, 1895) from the lesser spotted dogfish Scyliorhinus canicula (L.) (Elasmobranchii: Scyliorhinidae Gill, 1862) off Tunisia, with a key to species of the genus Echinocephalus.

Echinocephalus caniculus n. sp. (Nematoda, Gnathostomatidae Railliet, 1895) was isolated from the spiral valve of the lesser spotted dogfish Scyliorhinus canicula (L.) from the waters off Kalaat El Andalous, North East Tunisia. This new species is mainly characterized by a cephalic bulb armed with 31-39 transverse rows of uncinated hooks, a comparatively long oesophagus, short spicules and the presence of a gubernaculum. The new species differs from its congeners by having four cervical sacs of almost equal length, a higher oesophagus/body length ratio, the arrangement of the caudal papillae,

Evidence of androgen receptivity in the pathway of testicular descent in humans. A postnatal study.

The aim of this study was to detect androgen receptors in paratesticular tissue in an attempt to explain a possible mechanism of effect for hormone treatment in undescended testes. A total of 45 biopsies from the gubernaculum testis, musculus cremaster, processus vaginalis and subcutaneous fascia were taken from 13 patients aged 4 months-65 years. All biopsies were instantly frozen in liquid N2 in Norway and later transported to Hamburg for analysis. By using various procedures for stabilization and separation, cytosol was prepared which contained all primary intranuclear and extranuclear andr

Familial male pseudohermaphroditism and testicular descent in the racoon dog (Nyctereutes).

Sexual differentiation was investigated in familial male pseudohermaphroditism in Nyctereutes procyonoides (Canidae). In intersex males, development of external genital organs and prostate glandular tissue was severely disturbed; Wolffian (mesonephric) duct derivatives developed prepubertally but were absent in some adults. Müllerian (paramesonephric) duct regression was complete. Testicular descent was undisturbed. Male/female sex differences in plasma testosterone, 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone, and luteinizing hormone concentrations were present. Intersex plasma hormone concentrations were wi

Description of Heterorhabditis americana n. sp. (Rhabditida, Heterorhabditidae), a new entomopathogenic nematode species isolated in North America.

BACKGROUND: Heterorhabditis are important biological control agents in agriculture. Two Heterorhabditis populations, S8 and S10, were isolated from agricultural soils in the United States of America. Molecular analyses, based on mitochondrial and nuclear genes, showed that these populations are conspecific and represent a novel species of the "Bacteriophora" clade. This species was named Heterorhabditis americana n. sp. and is described in this study. METHODS: To describe H. americana n. sp., we carried out phylogenetic reconstructions using multiple genes, characterized their morphology, con

The descent of testis and reason for failed descent.

Although an enormous number of theories have been proposed to explain the descent of testis, none has provided a satisfactory explanation that covers the whole spectrum. Recent evidence suggests a hitherto unrecognized mechanism. This novel explanation precisely defihes all of the factors proven to be involved in the process, and links the features associated with normal or failed descent. The gubernaculum gives rise to both smooth and striated muscles. The testis is descended through the processus vaginalis via the propulsive force generated by the muscles. Propulsion describes the risk of to

Modified orchiopexy: a "real dartos pocket".

A modified technique of surgical treatment of undescended testes, termed the "real dartos pocket", is presented. The method may be briefly described as transinguinal orchiofuniculolysis, utilizing internal fixation of the tunica vaginalis and/or the gubernaculum to the everted dartos pocket (the tunica dartos of the septum being also grasped), with application of an additional inguinoscrotal incision, and cordopexy, if necessary. The narrowing of the opening on the Colles' fascia cranially, and on the tunica dartos at the scrotal entrance caudally, through the inguinoscrotal incision, are addi

Some nematodes from freshwater fishes in central Africa.

Twenty species (sixteen adult and four larval) of parasitic nematodes belonging to the Ascaridoidea, Camallanoidea, Cosmocercoidea, Dioctophymatoidea, Habronematoidea, Oxyuroidea, Seuratoidea, and Thelazioidea were collected from freshwater fishes of the Congo River basin in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Central African Republic in 2008 and 2012, respectively. Based on light and scanning electron microscopical examination, many species are redescribed in detail. This material also contained four previously unknown species, Labeonema longispiculatum sp. n. from Synodontis acantho

Laparoscopic Management of Maldescended Ovary Presenting with Recurrent Acute Abdomen.

Ovarian maldescent is an extremely rare gynecological phenomenon, usually associated with Müllerian abnormalities. We report a 27-year-old woman, presenting with acute, right-sided abdominal pain. She has a history of subfertility and repeated admissions with chronic pelvic pain. Previous hysterosalpingogram and laparoscopy demonstrated unicornuate uterus with absent right fallopian tube and ovary. A right-sided, ectopic ovary was identified on later imaging and suspected as the cause of her symptoms. She underwent laparoscopic excision of the maldescended ovary with remnant fimbrial end and g

The genitofemoral nerve may link testicular inguinoscrotal descent with congenital inguinal hernia.

The genitofemoral nerve (GFN) hypothesis for inguinoscrotal testicular descent proposes that calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), released from the genitofemoral nerve, controls the migration of the gubernaculum from the inguinal region to the scrotum between 26 and 40 weeks of gestation. The processus vaginalis provides a channel through which the testis descends from the abdomen to the scrotum. Following descent of the testis the processus vaginalis undergoes luminal obliteration and disappearance between the internal inguinal ring and the upper pole of the testis. The mechanism underlyin

Decreased testicular response to acute LH-stimulation and increased intratesticular concentration of oestradiol-17 beta in the abdominal testes in cryptorchid rats.

Rats were made cryptorchid, bi- or unilaterally, by cutting gubernaculum testis at birth. At 100 days of age the basal plasma testosterone concentration was smaller in bilateral cryptorchid animals as compared to unilateral cryptorchid and control rats. After acute LH-stimulation plasma testosterone concentration increased in all rats, where the highest concentrations were found in the control group. The amount of testosterone in the testis after a 30 min LH-stimulation was lower in both kinds of cryptorchid testes but higher in the scrotal testis of the unilateral cryptorchid rats, all as com

Cryptorchidism in Children with Zika-Related Microcephaly.

The genitourinary tract was recently identified as a potential site of complications related to the congenital Zika syndrome (CZS). We provide the first report of a series of cryptorchidism cases in 3-year-old children with Zika-related microcephaly who underwent consultations between October 2018 and April 2019 as part of the follow-up of the children cohort of the Microcephaly Epidemic Research Group, Pernambuco, Brazil. Of the 22 males examined, eight (36.4%) presented with cryptorchidism. Among 14 undescended testis cases, 11 (78.6%) could be palpated in the inguinal region. Seven of the e
