"We Moved Her Too Soon": Navigating Guilt Among Adult Child and Spousal Caregivers of Persons Living with Dementia Following a Move into Residential Long-Term Care.

Guilt is a complex and multifaceted emotion navigated by many family caregivers. Guilt is sometimes experienced following a transition into a residential long-term care facility, even when the move is necessary given high care needs related to Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. This mixed methods study identifies and compares areas of guilt most frequently experienced by spouse and adult child caregivers (N=83) of a family member with dementia following transition into residential long-term care. Nearly half of caregivers reported experiencing guilt from their care recipient, other fam

Shame, guilt, and posttraumatic stress disorder in adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse at risk for human immunodeficiency virus: outcomes of a randomized clinical trial of group psychotherapy treatment.

This study evaluated the effectiveness of group psychotherapy in reducing levels of shame and guilt in adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse at risk for HIV, and whether such reductions would mediate the effects of treatment on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. One hundred sixty-six women were randomized into 3 conditions: a trauma-focused group, a present-focused group, and a waitlist group. Women received 6 months of treatment and were assessed at pretreatment (T1), immediately posttreatment (T2), and 6 months posttreatment (T3). Both treatment conditions resulted in reduced

How does the mode of inheritance of a genetic condition influence families? A study of guilt, blame, stigma, and understanding of inheritance and reproductive risks in families with X-linked and autosomal recessive diseases.

PURPOSE: While the mode of inheritance of a genetic condition has long been considered to have not only medical, but also psychosocial consequences for families, this supposition has never been tested. METHODS: We surveyed 112 members of 51 families (59% response) with chronic granulomatous disease to determine the influence of mode of inheritance on parents', siblings', and patients' (1) knowledge of inheritance and reproductive risk; (2) concern about risk to future family-members; (3) feelings of guilt and blame; and (4) feelings of stigmatization. Ninety-six members of 51 families (49% re

Moderators of post-binge eating negative emotion in eating disorders.

The purpose of this study was to test the impact of two variables on post-binge eating negative emotion in a combined sample of women with anorexia nervosa (AN; n = 47) and bulimia nervosa (BN; n = 121). Participants completed two weeks of an ecological momentary assessment protocol during which they provided multiple daily ratings of overall negative affect and guilt and reported eating disorder behaviors including binge eating and self-induced vomiting. The results indicate that both overall negative affect and guilt exhibited a statistically significantly decrease in the hour immediately fo

An Investigation of the Association Between Shame and Problem Gambling: The Mediating Role of Maladaptive Coping Motives.

Despite often being considered equivalent affective states, shame and guilt have differential associations with problem gambling with only shame showing a strong positive association with problem gambling. However, little is known about the mechanisms underlying the shame-problem gambling association. Further, shame and guilt are associated with distinct coping strategies, with shame motivating maladaptive coping (e.g., avoidance, escape) and guilt motivating adaptive coping (e.g., taking corrective action). This study aimed to examine whether maladaptive coping motives for gambling mediate th

Role of trait shame in the association between posttraumatic stress and aggression among men with a history of interpersonal trauma.

Given the theoretical and empirical associations among posttraumatic stress, shame, and interpersonal aggression, this study examined whether trait shame accounts for the associations between posttraumatic stress and aggressive behavior in a sample of 103 men with a history of interpersonal trauma. Results indicated that trait shame accounted for the associations of posttraumatic stress with the variety of both physically and psychologically aggressive behavior, as well as with the frequency of physical aggression. This study also examined trait guilt, given its conceptual relationship to both

Violent women, blame attribution, crime, and personality.

BACKGROUND: The attribution of blame for criminal act has an impact, both on the way the offender must come to terms with the offence and on the risk of recidivism. Blame attribution has been found to be related to the type of crime and personality. AIMS: This study examined the relationship of blame attribution and feelings of guilt in violent female offenders, according to factors related to crime, background and personality. METHODS: The Gudjonsson Blame Attribution Inventory (BAI) and the Defense Style Questionnaire (DSQ) were administered to 58 violent female offenders. The Hare Psychop

Self-Conscious Emotions and Social Isolation Among Young Adult Cancer Survivors.

OBJECTIVE: Young adults with cancer (YACs) experience psychological and psychosocial challenges related to cancer. In this qualitative study, we identified self-conscious emotions of guilt, shame and pride associated with psychosocial challenges in a sample of recent cancer survivors. We aim to inform the adaptation of psychotherapy interventions to support psychological adjustment to cancer through the regulation of self-conscious emotions. METHODS: We recruited 35 YACs (English-speaking, age 18-39, completed treatment 2-5 years prior) through YA cancer advocacy organizations. Participants c

Reassessing the dimensionality of the moral emotions.

The dimensionality of the moral emotions was tested to examine whether theoretical distinctions between specific emotions were empirically supported. A total of 720 drink-driving offenders indicated the degree to which they experienced feelings associated with the moral emotions, in an interview conducted after attending court or a restorative justice conference. Expected distinctions between shame and guilt were not found. Instead the principal components analysis identified three factors: shame-guilt, embarrassment-exposure, and unresolved shame. The results also show that shame-guilt was re

Abuse in Sports: The Influence of Defendant and Victim Gender, Type of Abuse, Type of Sport, and Delayed Reporting on Mock Juror Decision-Making.

With an increase in athletes coming forward alleging abuse from their coach, the current studies sought to examine how mock jurors perceive accusations of abuse within a sports setting. Study 1 (N = 1,264) varied coach/defendant gender, athlete/victim gender, type of abuse (physical vs. emotional), and type of sport (hockey vs. gymnastics). Study 2 (N = 935) expanded on Study 1 by replacing the type of abuse with delayed reporting (5- vs. 20- vs. 35 years). Participants were presented with a mock-trial transcript and then answered a series of questions pertaining to the defendant's guilt, perc

When do we believe experts? The power of the unorthodox view.

This paper examines the extent to which orthodoxy (degree of typicality) and congruence (degree of similarity with own opinion) mediate the influence of expert advice on decision makers' judgments. Overall, 227 members of the public and 60 police officers completed an online questionnaire involving an investigation into a child sex offence. Participants were asked to first (i) formulate their own "profile" of a likely offender then (ii) estimate the guilt of two presented suspect descriptions (orthodox vs. unorthodox), and, following the presentation of an "expert's" profile that matched eithe

Juror decision making: Does juror stigma, mental health literacy, or the description of a defendant's mental health status, impact decision-making in a mock criminal trial?

There has been limited research considering how different types of mental health information can influence juror decisions of guilt. The present study adopted an experimental methodology in which the amount of mental health information presented to contextualise an alleged offence of Criminal Damage was varied. Participants (n = 243) were randomly assigned to one of three conditions ('control': a mental health explanation could be reasonably inferred but was not directly stated; 'symptoms only': clear mental health symptoms were described but no diagnosis was provided; 'symptoms + diagnosis':

The role of affect in the maintenance of binge-eating disorder: Evidence from an ecological momentary assessment study.

Affect regulation models of eating disorder behavior, which predict worsening of affect prior to binge-eating episodes and improvement in affect following such episodes, have received support in anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. However, limited work has examined the trajectories of affect surrounding binge eating in binge-eating disorder (BED). In the current study, ecological momentary assessment data from 112 men and women with BED were used to examine the trajectories of positive affect (PA), negative affect (NA), guilt, fear, hostility, and sadness relative to binge-eating episodes. High trait shame undermines the protective effects of prevalence knowledge on state shame following HPV/CIN diagnosis in women.

Human papillomavirus (HPV), and the related, cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), are common yet poorly understood physical conditions. The diagnosis of HPV often elicits shame and guilt, which in turn may undermine psychological and physical health. The current study compared shame and guilt responses to diagnosis among two groups: women diagnosed with HPV/CIN and women diagnosed with Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV/IM). Eighty women recently diagnosed with HPV/CIN or EBV/IM completed measures of shame- and guilt-proneness, shame and guilt following diagnosis, and disease knowledge including pre

Examining the Aftermath of Work-Family Conflict Episodes: Internal Attributions, Self-Conscious Emotions, Family Engagement, and Well-Being.

Little empirical research exists on attributions that people make regarding work-family conflict that they experience. Our study used attribution theory to examine the aftermath of work-family conflict episodes. We used a diary method in which respondents reported their daily encounters with work-family conflict, attributions they made about its causes, feelings of guilt and shame they experienced, and their levels of daily family engagement and well-being after work. Based on Ilies et al. (2012) we hypothesized that internal attributions of work-family conflict would be associated with feelin

BLAME-LESS STUDY: a two-arm randomized controlled trial evaluating the effects of an online psychoeducation programme for adolescents who have experienced physical/sexual violence or sexual abuse. Rationale, study design, and methods.

Background: Victims of physical/sexual violence or sexual abuse commonly experience defense responses that result in feelings of guilt and shame. Although trauma-focused interventions are effective in treating post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms, the presence of trauma-related shame and guilt can potentially hinder the process of disclosure during treatment, thus diminishing their overall effectiveness. It is hypothesized that providing psychoeducation about common defense responses will reduce feelings of shame and guilt, thereby increasing receptivity to trauma-focused treatment.Objectiv

Gender differences in affective reactions to first coitus.

Men's and women's affective reactions to their first sexual intercourse experience were examined. Eighty-seven college men and 122 college women completed questionnaires about first coital experience. Women were significantly more likely to report that their first sexual experience left them feeling less pleasure, satisfaction, and excitement than men, and more sadness, guilt, nervousness, tension, embarrassment, and fear. Factor analyses were used to group emotions into coherent factors for each sex. Four factors emerged for men: pleasure, romance, anxiety, and guilt. Three factors emerged fo
