Social anxiety disorder in genuine halitosis patients.

BACKGROUND: There is a possibility that genuine halitosis patients' anxiety do not recover after oral malodor treatment due to their social anxiety disorder. The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of social anxiety disorder on the level of anxiety in genuine halitosis patients before and after treatment for oral malodor. METHODS: The subjects were 262 genuine halitosis patients who visited the Fresh Breath Clinic from March, 2008 to October, 2009. The subjects who had score 2 or higher by the organoleptic test were diagnosed as genuine halitosis patients. Gas chromatogra

[Preventive dentistry 7. Getting rid of halitosis].

Halitosis or bad breath is a problem that affects many people and its source is generally found in the oral cavity (intra-oral halitosis). Bacteria in the oral cavity produce volatile sulphur compounds such as hydrogen sulphide and methyl mercaptan that not only emit an unpleasant odour, but may also have toxic effects on the periodontal tissues. Good oral hygiene, a healthy periodontium and healthy teeth are the basis for the prevention of intra-oral halitosis and dentists and dental hygienists therefore play an essential role in its prevention.

Halitosis among racially diverse populations: an update.

The aim of this paper is to highlight the cultural perceptions of halitosis to dental professionals. Halitosis (oral malodour or bad breath) is caused mainly by tongue coating and periodontal disease. Bacterial metabolism of amino acids leads to metabolites including many compounds, such as indole, skatole and volatile sulphur compounds (VSC), hydrogen sulphide, methyl mercaptan and dimethyl sulphide. They are claimed to be the main aetiological agents for halitosis. Gastrointestinal diseases are also generally believed to cause halitosis. In general, physicians and dentists are poorly informe

Dental restorative materials and halitosis: a preliminaryin-vitrostudy.

Despite the widespread use of dental restorative materials, little information exists in the literature regarding their potential impact on bad breath. This in vitro study aims to fill this gap by investigating the influence of different restorative materials on the release of hydrogen sulfide (H2S). Thirteen diverse dental restorative materials, including composites, flowable composites, glass ionomer restorative materials, high-copper amalgam, and CAD-CAM blocks, were examined. Cellulose Sponge models were used as negative and positive control. All samples were prepared with a diameter of 5

Narrative review on artificially intelligent olfaction in halitosis.

Halitosis, commonly known as oral malodor, is a multifactorial health concern that significantly impacts the psychological and social well-being of individuals. It is the third most frequent reason for individuals to seek dental treatment, after dental caries and periodontal diseases. For an in-depth exploration of the topic of halitosis, an extensive literature review was conducted. The review focused on articles published in peer-reviewed journals and only those written in the English language were considered. The search for relevant literature began by employing subject headings such as 'ha

Laser Therapy: An Alternative Approach for the Management of Halitosis.

Halitosis is the result of combining the Greek word "osis" (pathological alteration) with the Latin phrase "halitus" (breath). No matter what the cause, halitosis can be described as the presence of a foul odour. Effective treatment of halitosis may be facilitated by knowledge of the illnesses and factors that contribute to the condition as well as its symptoms. To properly diagnose and treat patients, healthcare professionals, general practitioners, and dentists must comprehend the cause of the ailment and the best course of treatment. A prevalent issue affecting a large proportion of the glo

Tongue-Coating Microbial and Metabolic Characteristics in Halitosis.

Halitosis is a common oral condition, which leads to social embarrassment and affects quality of life. Cumulative evidence has suggested the association of tongue-coating microbiome with the development of intraoral halitosis. The dynamic variations of tongue-coating microbiota and metabolites in halitosis have not been fully elucidated. Therefore, the present study aimed to determine the tongue-coating microbial and metabolic characteristics in halitosis subjects without other oral diseases using metagenomics and metabolomics analysis. The participants underwent oral examination, halitosis as

Concerning perceived and clinically-measured levels of halitosis.

The different types of self-reported halitosis complaints include those where one feels that one's breath smells bad, where one feels that one has bad breath because of the attitudes of others, and where others have pointed out the presence of bad breath. The results of previous studies comparing the objective and subjectives measures of halitosis are inconsistent, and few studies have used gas chromatography (GC) to measure halitosis in a large sample. This study aimed to examine the objectively measured halitosis levels based on the reasons individuals are concerned about halitosis. We inclu

Identification of Salivary Microorganisms and Metabolites Associated with Halitosis.

Halitosis is mainly caused by the action of oral microbes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences in salivary microbes and metabolites between subjects with and without halitosis. Of the 52 participants, 22 were classified into the halitosis group by the volatile sulfur compound analysis on breath samples. The 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing and metabolomics approaches were used to investigate the difference in microbes and metabolites in saliva of the control and halitosis groups. The profiles of microbiota and metabolites were relatively different between the halitosi
