UNLABELLED: The purpose of this brief paper is to present the preliminary results of a modified Austin/chevron osteotomy for treatment of hallux valgus and hallux rigidus. In this procedure, the dorsal arm of the osteotomy is performed orthogonal to the horizontal plane of the first metatarsal, the main advantage being that this allows much easier and more accurate multiplanar correction of first metatarsal deformities. From 2010 to 2013, 184 consecutive patients with symptomatic hallux valgus and 48 patients with hallux rigidus without severe metatarsophalangeal joint degeneration underwent s

Sixty-two feet in 39 patients who were treated by insertion of a silastic ball spacer prosthesis into the first metatarsophalangeal joint for hallux valgus or hallux rigidus have been reviewed with a follow-up time of between 2 and 6 years. Twenty-one results (34%) were excellent, 27 (43%) were fair, 13 (21%) were poor, and one was revised. Seventeen feet (27%) had some metatarsalgia at followup. Results were disappointing in the young patients; in 19 cases of hallux valgus under the age of 45, 8 were either poor or had been revised. The original concept of the silastic ball spacer was to main

Hallux valgus and hallux flexus associated with cerebral palsy foot deformity may be due to equinovalgus and/or metatarsus primus adductus or combinations of these. Occasionally the condition occurs in equinovarus feet. Hallux flexus or "dorsal bunion" is usually due to a weak extensor hallucis longus, overpull of the anterior tibial muscle on the first metatarsal and spasticity or contracture of the flexor hallucis longus or brevis. A weak peroneus longus muscle has not caused this deformity. The condition is usually predictable in the growing child if all factors related to gait, collagen st

This study was to analyze intrasubject radiographic progression of the hallux valgus deformity by comparing the mildly and severely affected sides in patients with bilateral asymmetric hallux valgus in the whole group as well as the metatarsus adductus and the nonmetatarsus adductus subgroups. A total of 186 patients with bilateral asymmetrical hallux valgus deformity with a difference of 5° or greater in the hallux valgus angle were included, and 11 radiographic measurements were analyzed. The radiographic differences between the mildly and severely affected sides were compared. Correlation b

The Cotton osteotomy, as described in 1936 by Frederic Cotton, consisted of a medial cuneiform opening base wedge osteotomy. This Cotton osteotomy served to restore the "triangle of support" of the foot. In his address to the New England Surgical Society, he described this osteotomy as being multipurpose; it can be used for plantarflexion in hallux valgus surgery and has use in hallux rigidus conditions. Since its inception, the procedure has become a popular adjunct to aid in the restoration of the medial column deformity present in pes planus. Recently, there has been renewed interest in the

The involvement of valgus hindfoot deformity in hallux valgus deformity was confirmed in a rheumatoid arthritis case with a destructive valgus hindfoot deformity. Correction of severe valgus, calcaneal lateral offset, and pronated foot deformity instantly normalized hallux valgus deformities postoperatively. Thus, careful hindfoot status evaluation is important when assessing forefoot deformity, including hallux valgus, in rheumatoid arthritis cases.

PURPOSE: To investigate the efficiency of simultaneous correction of moderate to severe hallux valgus deformity and adult-type pes planus.
METHODS: Twenty cases of moderate to severe hallux valgus complicated with adult-type pes planus in 19 consecutive patients (15 (79%) women, 4 (11%) men; mean age: 44.50 ± 17.13 years, mean follow-up duration: 31.30 ± 17.02 months) were included. Medial calcaneal sliding osteotomy was performed to correct hindfoot valgus, whereas treatments of hallux valgus were case dependent.
RESULTS: The mean postoperative hallux valgus angle, intermetatarsal angle, hi

OBJECTIVE: To observe clinical effect of percutaneous minimally invasive osteotomy with 8-shaped bandage and hallux valgus splint fixation in treating moderate hallux valgus.
METHODS: Totally 23 patients with moderate hallux valgus were treated with percutaneous minimally invasive osteotomy with 8-shaped bandage and hallux valgus splint fixation from August 2019 to January 2021, and 1 patient was loss to follow-up, and finally 22 patients(30 feet) were included, 4 males (6 feet) and 18 females(24 feet), aged from 27 to 66 years old with an average of(50.59±11.95) years old. PURPOSE OF THE STUDY Accurate radiographic measurements are crucial in treating hallux valgus (HV). This three-dimensional deformity should not be evaluated from one joint on one plane. However, in practice, surgeons measure the deformity only on transverse dorsoplantar radiographs. We determined the amount of error associated with positioning the foot incorrectly on radiographs. MATERIAL AND METHODS To simulate incorrect positions of the foot in radiographic evaluation, we designed an angled device that can move in transverse and frontal plane. In four patients with symptomatic HV, we took we

A new operation for hallux valgus consists of a horizontally directed "V" displacement osteotomy done in the head of the first metatarsal. This procedure corrects most of the primus varus, the valgus tilt of the articular surface of the first metatarsal and, if present, the axial rotation of the great toe. The osteotomy is combined with a release and balancing of soft-tissue structures on both sides of the joint. No casting and usually no internal fixation is necessary. Ambulation is generally recommended on the third postoperative day. The operative techniques, indications for surgery, clinic

Background: Hallux valgus is a common forefoot disorder with hundreds of proposed management techniques. Distal chevron osteotomy with a modified McBride procedure has been traditionally recommended for mild hallux valgus because of its simple and less invasive nature with fewer complications, faster recovery, and reliable outcomes. In recent years, the indications for this procedure have expanded to include hallux valgus with severe deformities. This study aims to compare the radiographic outcomes of the surgical treatment for moderate versus severe hallux valgus patients from the perspective

BACKGROUND: An association between the medial partite hallux sesamoid (MPHS) and hallux valgus (HV) has been suggested; however, a causal relationship has not been confirmed. This study aimed to determine their causal relationship using a cross-sectional radiographic survey of a large-scale population cohort covering a wide age group.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The fifth survey of the Research on Osteoarthritis/Osteoporosis against Disability study involved 1997 participants aged 21-95 years who had undergone anteroposterior radiography of bilateral feet. The presence of MPHS, its morphology, and

BACKGROUND: Previous qualitative studies have linked first metatarsal head morphology with hallux valgus (HV) and hallux rigidus (HR). This study used a quantitative measurement of 1st MT radius of curvature to assess if HR MT heads were flatter than HV heads.
METHODS: Weight bearing foot films were used in HV, HR, and normal patients (no forefoot complaints) to measure the metatarsal head radius of curvature (normalized by dividing the radius of curvature by the first metatarsal length to adjust for magnification and foot size).
RESULTS: Radiographs from 299 feet were analyzed (105 normal,
