UNLABELLED: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the time to diagnosis and management of hook of hamate fractures in an era of advanced imaging. We performed a retrospective study of 51 patients treated for hook of hamate fractures. Patients were sent a quickDASH questionnaire regarding the outcomes of their treatment. Hook of hamate fractures were diagnosed with advanced imaging at a median of 27 days. Clinical findings of hook of hamate tenderness had better sensitivity than carpal tunnel-view radiographs. Nonunion occurred in 24% of patients with non-operative treatment and did not occ

Traumatic and overuse injuries of bones and tendons of the wrist represent a significant proportion of the musculoskeletal disorders encountered in both athletic and occupational settings. Conventional radiography remains the first-line imaging modality for osseous trauma, but it can miss up to a third of scaphoid and hamate fractures. Computed tomography is superior for characterizing occult or nondisplaced fractures. Magnetic resonance imaging provides important information on occult fractures, overuse injuries of osseous structures, and tendinous abnormalities.A comprehensive understanding

Background: Factors such as age and joint structure affect normal wrist motion. The midcarpal joint participates in flexion/extension, radial-ulnar/deviation (RUD), and since lunate/wrist type-2 is likely more stable than a lunate/wrist type-1, we suggest that midcarpal joint structure will affect wrist motion. Our purpose was to compare wrist motion in Caucasian and Japanese populations and to associate motion with midcarpal joint morphology. We hypothesised that radiographic structure would correlate with wrist motion. Methods: A total of 164 patients with normal wrist radiographs were inclu

The surgical treatment of osteoarthritis of the wrist secondary to pseudarthrosis of the scaphoid is presented in the light of twenty years experience, and with improved knowledge of the pathological anatomy of this problem. The condition is difficult to treat owing to the varied pathology, the different needs of the patients and the alternative treatments available. Where a pseudarthrosis exists with involvement of the scaphoid-radius joint only, we recommend radial styloidectomy and repair of the pseudarthrosis. Where the pseudarthrosis is associated with carpal collapse which can be correct

BACKGROUND: The Importance of the appendicular skeleton in the conformation, shape and physiology of wild animals especially carnivores for adaptation and survival cannot be overemphasized, as limited and obsolete information on the bones of the forelimb necessitated this study. Matured adult African lions (Male and female) that weighed 173 kg and 112 kg were obtained at different times after post mortem examinations of their carcasses. Bone preparation was achieved via cold water maceration after proper skin and muscle removal to a barest minimum.
RESULTS: The acromion process of the scapula

Background: We investigated whether opportunistic screening for osteoporosis can be done from computed tomography (CT) scans of the wrist/forearm using machine learning. Methods: A retrospective study of 196 patients aged 50 years or greater who underwent CT scans of the wrist/forearm and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scans within 12 months of each other was performed. Volumetric segmentation of the forearm, carpal, and metacarpal bones was performed to obtain the mean CT attenuation of each bone. The correlations of the CT attenuations of each of the wrist/forearm bones and their co

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a sensitive and useful method for the detection of synovitis and joint destruction in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. However, the patterns of MRI-detected bone erosion, bone marrow edema (BME), synovitis, and tenosynovitis have received insufficient attention. Therefore, this study evaluated the patterns of bone erosion, BME, synovitis, and tenosynovitis, and calculated the RA-MRI score (RAMRIS) of patients with RA at the carpal and metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joints using MRI.
METHODS: MRI datasets from 43 RA patients were analyzed. All

Using surface measurements obtained from anterior-posterior X-rays, the carpal bones on the side of the previous supracondylar fracture were compared with those on the uninjured side. A disparity in growth was found between the two sides. Most often, an increased growth of the scaphoid was seen on the side of the fracture. Analysis of the data obtained from the measurements of all carpal bones did not lead to any definite conclusions. Of the seven carpal bones studied, a greater length (1 to 3 mm.) was found 86 times and a greater width (1 to 4 mm.) 53 times. Decreased length (1 to 4 mm.) was

UNLABELLED: Though the Greulich and Pyle (GP) method is easy, inter-observer variability, differential maturation of hand bones influences ratings. The Tanner-Whitehouse (TW) method is more accurate, but cumbersome. A simpler method combining the above, such that it utilizes fewer bones without affecting accuracy, would be widely used and more applicable in clinical practice.
OBJECTIVES: 1. Devising a simplified method utilizing three bones of the hand and wrist for bone age (BA) assessment. 2. Testing whether the 3 bone method gives comparable results to standard methods (GP,TW2,TW3) in Indi

INTRODUCTION: We investigated the changes in MRI T2 mapping values in subjects with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) compared to healthy controls.
METHODS: We enrolled 71 patients with CTS and 26 healthy controls. Median nerve T2 values were measured at the distal carpal tunnel, hamate bone, proximal carpal tunnel, and forearm levels. These were compared between patients and controls and correlated with median nerve cross-sectional area (CSA) and nerve conduction measurements.
RESULTS: The mean T2 values at the proximal carpal tunnel levels were higher in the CTS group (56.7 ms) than in the cont

Hand and wrist injuries are common occurrences in amateur and professional sports and many of them are sport-specific. These can be divided into two categories: traumatic injuries and overuse injuries. The aim of this article is to review the most common hand and wrist sports-related lesions. Acute wrist injuries are predominantly bone fractures, such as those of the scaphoid, hamate hook, and ulnar styloid. Ligament lesions are more challenging for radiologists and may lead to carpal instability if undiagnosed. Overuse wrist injuries are mainly represented by tendinous disorders, with De Quer

Competitive and recreational athletes sustain a wide variety of soft tissue, bone, ligament, tendon and nerve damage to their upper extremities. Most such injuries are related to direct trauma or repetitive stress, and account for a significant amount of 'down time' for athletes participating in a wide range of sports, particularly those in which the arm is utilised for throwing, catching or swinging. Overuse injuries to the elbow include musculotendinous injuries, ulnar nerve injuries and ligamentous injuries. Osteochondrol lesions of the capitellum and posterior impingement injuries in the j

In the analysis of magnetic resonance (MR) images of the wrist joint, some structural variations may lead to misinterpretation. Our aim was to search for different anatomical variants and their MR characteristics on axial images. Two groups of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (thirty one) and carpal tunnel syndrome (sixty two), and a group of asymptomatic controls (fifty four) underwent bilateral MR axial wrist imaging from the metacarpal bases to the distal radiocarpal joint. The imaging techniques included spin echo (SE), turbo spin echo (TSE) and fast field echo (FFE) sequences, using 3 m

BACKGROUND: Split hamate fractures, which most often are a complicating part of fracture dislocations of the 5th or 5th and 4th carpometacarpal joints, are rare and challenging injuries that can severely affect hand function. The injury usually requires surgical treatment. However, both short- and long-term data on the effectiveness of these interventions are limited. The objective of this study is to advance understanding of this rare hand surgical condition by investigating its epidemiology, etiopathogenesis, subsequent complications, and functional outcomes.
METHODS: Between 2010 and 2024,

Hemi-hamate arthroplasty is a method used to reconstruct complex fracture-dislocations of the proximal interphalangeal joint of the fingers. Other graft sites, including the toe second and third phalanges, have been proposed as alternatives to hemi-hamate arthroplasty due to variable clinical outcomes and anatomy. Through a prospective magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based study in asymptomatic individuals, we aimed to characterize the anatomy of the proximal interphalangeal joint and compare this with the hamate, second and third toes to determine the closest anatomical match using pre-deter

In this study we investigated the reliability of ultrasound in measuring median nerve characteristics including cross-sectional area (CSA), flattening ratio (FR), swelling ratio (SR), and mean grayscale. Generalizability theory was used to assess inter- and intrarater reliability using the dependability coefficient (phi), normalized standard error of measurement, and normalized minimum detectable change (MDC(NORM)) for multiple study design protocols. Interrater reliability was generally moderate. Intrarater reliability was mostly good (phi > 0.876) when using a single image, captured on one o

Chronic unreduced dislocations of the proximal interphalangeal joint are uncommon, and management principles for these injuries have not been defined. The dislocation can be volar or dorsal and closed reduction is rarely successful owing to soft tissue contractures. Treatment options in literature reviews for such rare injuries included open reduction of pip joint with volar plate arthroplasty, extension block pinning, hemi hamate arthroplasty, pip joint arthrodesis, Suzuki dynamic frame fixation, open reduction and repair of capsule and collateral ligaments with suture anchors. Few cases of a

Subcutaneous flexor tendon rupture in patients with rheumatoid arthritis is rare compared with extensor tendon rupture, with a reported incidence of approximately one-tenth of that of extensor tendons. The pathophysiology of flexor tendon rupture is not fully understood. We report two cases of spontaneous flexor digitorum profundus tendon rupture of the little finger in patients with rheumatoid arthritis despite low disease activity and the absence of advanced joint destruction. Both patients presented with an inability to actively flex their little fingers without any history of significant t
