Avulsion of the hamstring muscle group: a follow-up of 6 adult non-athletes with early operative treatment: a brief report.

BACKGROUND: Complete proximal avulsions of the hamstring muscle group may cause significant morbidity and loss of function. These pelvis-near musculoskeletal injuries are mostly acquired during sports activities in a hip flexion and knee extension. Here we present a study group of 6 middle-aged to elderly patients suffering a complete proximal hamstring avulsion and following early surgical refixation. Early surgical refixation leads to complete resumption of the activities of daily life without loss of function. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The 6 patients (3 men and 3 women) included in this study

Differential muscle activation patterns and kinematics during the nordic hamstring exercise and the maximum-speed single-leg bridge test.

The Nordic Hamstring Exercise (NHE) is widely used to assess hamstring strain injury (HSI) risk, but the joint angles and resulting hamstring muscle-tendon unit (MTU) lengths are dissimilar to sprinting, which may limit sensitivity. The Maximum-Speed Single-Leg Bridge Test (MS-SLBT) was developed to assess hamstring function at joint angles better resembling sprinting, but a direct comparison to the NHE and published sprint kinematics is lacking. This cross-sectional study compared muscle activation of the semitendinosus, biceps femoris, gluteus maximus, medial gastrocnemius, and rectus femori

The effects of eccentric exercise on passive hamstring muscle stiffness: Comparison of shear-wave elastography and passive knee torque outcomes.

The aim of our study was to assess eccentric-exercise-induced changes in passive knee joint torque, passive knee joint stiffness and shear modulus at of the hamstring muscles. We hypothesized that eccentric exercise would elicit an increase in all outcomes. Fourteen healthy volunteers (age = 25.5±4.7 years) performed eccentric exercise protocol. Before and after 0h, 1h, 24h and 48h, we measured the shear modulus of hamstring muscles using shear-wave elastography and passive knee joint stiffness on isokinetic dynamometer. After eccentric exercise, the shear modulus of biceps femoris increased a

Neuromuscular characteristics of agonists and antagonists during maximal eccentric knee flexion in soccer players with a history of hamstring muscle injuries.

BACKGROUND: Muscle strain injuries (MSIs) in the hamstrings are among the most prevalent injuries in elite soccer. We aimed to examine the relation between biomechanical maladaptation in eccentric strength and neuromuscular factors separated by their time and frequency domains. METHODS: 20 elite soccer players with a previous history of unilateral MSI in the M. biceps femoris (BF) long head and 20 without MSI participated. Knee flexion torques, rate of torque development (RTD) and electromyographic signals (EMG) of the BF, the M. semitendinosus (SMT) and knee extensors were obtained during un

Is it possible to voluntarily increase hamstring muscle activation during landing from a snow jump in alpine skiing? - a pilot study.

Activation of the hamstrings has been discussed as a measure for reducing strain on the ACL during jump landings in alpine skiing. The current study tested the hypothesis that hamstring and quadriceps activation can be voluntarily increased by the athlete. Specifically, two different instructions - to increase hamstring activation or to increase upper-leg co-contraction - were compared to normal landings. Eight members of the German national and junior national squad in freestyle skiing (age 19.6 ± 3.8 years; weight 66.1 ± 13.2 kg; height 172.2 ± 7.7 cm) performed 12 jump landings on a prepare

Hamstring-to-quadriceps fatigue ratio offers new and different muscle function information than the conventional non-fatigued ratio.

Commonly used injury risk prediction tests such as the hamstring-to-quadriceps (H:Q) strength ratio appear to be poor predictors of non-contact injury. However, these tests are typically performed in a non-fatigued state, despite accumulated fatigue being an important risk factor for both hamstring strain (HS) and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries in professional soccer players. After the effect of different H:Q calculation methods were compared and contrasted, the influence of neuromuscular fatigue on the H:Q strength ratio and the association between fatigued and non-fatigued ratio s

Sex-Specific Muscle Activity and Kinematics of the Posterior Kinetic Chain Targeting Hamstring Strengthening Exercises and Sprinting: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Neuromuscular and kinematic peculiarities in the lower extremities between the sexes could influence the way the posterior kinetic chain interacts during exercises and sprinting, potentially altering hamstring strengthening exercise selection. PURPOSE: This study compared sex-differences in four exercises (the rocker, perpetuum mobile fast and slow [PMfast and PMslow] and the Nordic Hamstring exercise) on their potential to simulate sprint-like muscle activity and kinematics. METHODS: Muscle activity of the posterior kinetic chain (biceps femoris [BFlh], semitendinosus [ST], glut

Hamstring muscle activation and morphology are significantly altered 1-6 years after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction with semitendinosus graft.

PURPOSE: Harvest of the semitendinosus (ST) tendon for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) causes persistent hypotrophy of this muscle even after a return to sport, although it is unclear if hamstring activation patterns are altered during eccentric exercise. It was hypothesised that in comparison with contralateral control limbs, limbs with previous ACLR involving ST grafts would display (i) deficits in ST activation during maximal eccentric exercise; (ii) smaller ST muscle volumes and anatomical cross-sectional areas (ACSAs); and (iii) lower eccentric knee flexor strength. Adaptations in biceps femoris long-head muscle-tendon mechanics during the Nordic hamstring exercise in response to 9 weeks of training.

BACKGROUND: Prolonged Nordic hamstring exercise (NHE) training reduces hamstring injury risk, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study examined how NHE training alters biceps femoris long-head (BFlh) muscle-tendon unit (MTU) mechanics during the exercise, focusing on how muscle adaptations influence fascicle and sarcomere lengths during the NHE after training. METHODS: Twelve recreationally active participants completed 9 weeks of supervised NHE training and 3 weeks of detraining. Knee flexor torque was measured using ankle-mounted load cells and estimated from the knee joint

Biceps femoris muscle-tendon strain during an entire overground sprint acceleration: a biomechanical explanation for hamstring injuries in the acceleration phase.

The objectives of this study were to analyse the peak muscle-tendon (MT) strain of the hamstring during an entire acceleration sprint overground and examine their relationship with relative joint angles and segment orientation in the sagittal plane, which are the direct causes of MT strain. Kinematic data were recorded using a 3D inertial motion capture system in 21 male semi-professional soccer players during 40-metre overground sprint. Scaled musculoskeletal models were used to estimate peak MT strain in the hamstring over 16 steps. Biceps femoris long head (BFLH) exhibited the largest peaks
