Surgical handwashing: drying with one or two surgical towels - a randomized clinical trial.

AIM: Hand drying following surgical scrubbing is a critical step in reducing bacterial transmission, yet the optimal method remains uncertain. This randomized clinical superiority trial evaluated whether using one versus two towels affects contamination risk among healthcare personnel. METHODS: Anesthesiologists, surgeons, residents and scrub technologists from three centers in Bogotá, Colombia, performing surgical handwashing at least weekly, were eligible. A parallel 1:1 randomized design was implemented, with operating theaters selected via stratified randomization and intervention allocat

Trachoma, the world's leading infectious cause of blindness: The remaining gap in care and access to basic handwashing facilities.

PURPOSE: Trachoma, the world's leading infectious cause of blindness, has been targeted by the WHO for elimination through the SAFE strategy: surgery, antibiotics, facial cleanliness, and environmental improvement. Although significant progress has been made, there remains a gap in care. This project studied the association of geographical distribution of the remaining need for trachoma intervention and its association with access to basic handwashing facilities at home, as an indicator of water/sanitation infrastructure. We hypothesized that poor water sanitation would correspond to areas whe

Effectiveness of interventions to improve drinking water, sanitation, and handwashing with soap on risk of diarrhoeal disease in children in low-income and middle-income settings: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Estimates of the effectiveness of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) interventions that provide high levels of service on childhood diarrhoea are scarce. We aimed to provide up-to-date estimates on the burden of disease attributable to WASH and on the effects of different types of WASH interventions on childhood diarrhoea in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). METHODS: In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we updated previous reviews following their search strategy by searching MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Cochrane Library, and BIOSIS Citation Index for studies o

Chronic blepharitis: easy nursing interventions for a common problem.

1. Blepharitis is a chronic, usually bilateral, inflammation of the eyelid margins. It is a lifelong condition, difficult to eradicate, and requires constant vigilance to restrain its irritating manifestations. 2. Treatment includes elimination of the scale caking the eyelids and eyebrows; removal of the offending bacteria, the materials they grow on, and the debris they leave; and healing the affected areas. 3. Scrupulous eye hygiene along with good handwashing habits will keep most cases of blepharitis under control. Contact lens wearers must be careful of cross-contamination between eye, le

No time for handwashing!? Handwashing versus alcoholic rub: can we afford 100% compliance?

Handwashing is the most important and least expensive measure to prevent transmission of nosocomial infections. However, compliance rarely exceeds 40% under study conditions. Alcoholic hand disinfection (AHD) generally is used in Europe. In contrast, handwashing with medicated soap is practiced most frequently in the United States. Healthcare workers often explain the failure to comply with handwashing or AHD as due to the limited time available for this practice. We calculated a time consumption for handwashing and AHD in a representative model intensive-care unit with 12 healthcare workers,

Effect of Alcohol Swab on Blood Glucose Readings Using a Glucometer: A Quasi-Experimental Study.

Background Although alcohol swabs are commonly used to disinfect the skin before capillary blood glucose testing, there is inconsistent evidence regarding their actual impact on glucose readings. Some studies have suggested that residual alcohol may lead to falsely elevated results, while others have found no significant effect. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of various finger-cleaning techniques on capillary blood glucose readings obtained using a glucometer. Methods A quasi-experimental design was conducted among 249 adult participants attending primary health care centers in Al-Ahs

Inhalation but not transdermal resorption of hand sanitizer ethanol causes positive ethyl glucuronide findings in urine.

BACKGROUND: Ethyl glucuronide (EtG) in urine is considered a specific marker of recent ethanol consumption. There is an ongoing debate about whether inhalation or transdermal resorption of sanitizer ethanol is the underlying cause for positive EtG findings after hand disinfection. METHODS: Desderman(®) pure (Schülke & Mayr GmbH, Norderstedt) with 78.2g 96% (v/v) ethanol/100g and approx. 10% 2-propanol was used for multiple hand disinfection without and under an exhauster. Simulating a common working day in a clinic, 5 co-workers of our lab used the sanitizer 32 fold within 8h and 2 persons we

The implications of healthcare professionals wearing jewelry on patient care biosafety: observational insights and experimental approaches.

The use of jewelry among healthcare professionals poses a risk of cross contamination due to potential bacterial accumulation and spread. Through a mixed-method design, this study first analyzed the implications of healthcare professionals wearing jewelry on patient care biosafety as well as on the residual bacterial load of hands and rings after hand hygiene. Firstly, an observational prevalence study to verify whether nursing professionals wear personal accessories during healthcare assistance was carried out. Second, an experimental design involving intentional contamination and hygiene of

Bacterial Colonization of Mobile Phones: Myth or Reality.

Introduction Bacteria tend to persist on mobile phones for longer durations causing hospital-acquired infections. This is primarily because mobile phones have become an extended hand to healthcare workers due to their unavoidable utilization and the lack of sanitization after use in wards. Methods A questionnaire was used to assess the usage and disinfection practices of mobile phones among medical students regularly attending the wards of a teaching hospital. Culture was done to assess the presence of bacteria and their resistance to antibiotics. Three sterile cotton swabs were performed for

Efficacy of ethanol-based hand foams using clinically relevant amounts: a cross-over controlled study among healthy volunteers.

BACKGROUND: Foams containing 62% ethanol are used for hand decontamination in many countries. A long drying time may reduce the compliance of healthcare workers in applying the recommended amount of foam. Therefore, we have investigated the correlation between the applied amount and drying time, and the bactericidal efficacy of ethanol foams. METHODS: In a first part of tests, four foams (Alcare plus, Avagard Foam, Bode test foam, Purell Instant Hand Sanitizer) containing 62% ethanol, which is commonly used in U.S. hospitals, were applied to 14 volunteers in a total of seven variations, to me

Virucidal activity of Virkon S on human enterovirus.

The efficacy of Virkon S, a commercial disinfectant as a virucidal spray against human enterovirus 71 (HEV71), the causative agent of the fatal form of hand, foot and mouth disease was examined. At least one log10 reduction of HEV71 titer was achieved when one spray of Virkon (1% or 2%) with ten minutes of contact time was applied. The infectivity was completely lost when four sprays of 1% or 2% Virkon were applied, suggesting that at least four sprays of 1% Virkon to the surface bound HEV71 was necessary to completely inactivate the virus. These findings suggest that Virkon S at the proper co

Contact dermatitis caused by prevention measures during the COVID-19 pandemic: a narrative review.

INTRODUCTION: During the outbreak of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), health care workers wore personal protective equipment including masks, gloves and goggles for a long time. In order to reduce the transmission routes of the virus, public places were sprayed with disinfectant. Moreover, the body, hands and clothing were frequently disinfected and washed for hygiene purposes. Studies have shown that these practices could easily irritate the skin and damage the skin barrier. Long-term irritation or exposure to allergens may lead to the occurrence of contact dermatitis (CD). METHODS: Subj

Evaluation of the impact of a novel surgical handwashing method on reformation of microbial flora on surgeons' hands.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of surgical hand antisepsis before surgical or invasive procedures is to suppress microbial flora on the hands. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of a modified surgical hand antisepsis technique on recolonization of microbial flora on surgeons' hands over time. METHODS: Participating surgeons were randomly assigned to one of two study groups. In both groups, surgical hand antisepsis was performed using 10% povidone-iodine followed by rinsing of the hands and forearms. In Group 1, surgeons dried their hands after rinsing according to the conventional method. In Gro

A feasibility study of the use of medical clowns as hand-hygiene promoters in hospitals.

Healthcare-acquired infections (HAI) pose vast health and economic burdens. Proper hand-hygiene is effective for reducing healthcare-acquired infections (HAI) incidence, yet staff compliance is generally low. This study assessed the feasibility, acceptability and preliminary effect of employing medical clowns to enhance hand-hygiene among physicians and nurses. Staff perception of the intervention and its impact on hand-hygiene was assessed via self-report questionnaires. Nearly 1,500 hand-hygiene compliance observations were conducted in accordance with WHO guidelines before, during and after
