Genetic and environmental influences on writing and their relations to language and reading.

Identical and fraternal twins (N=540, age 8 to 18 years) were tested on three different measures of writing (Woodcock-Johnson III Tests of Achievement-Writing Samples and Writing Fluency; Handwriting Copy from the Group Diagnostic Reading and Aptitude Achievement Tests), three different language skills (phonological awareness, rapid naming, and vocabulary), and three different reading skills (word recognition, spelling, and reading comprehension). Substantial genetic influence was found on two of the writing measures, writing samples and handwriting copy, and all of the language and reading me

Biased wrist and finger coordination in Parkinsonian patients during performance of graphical tasks.

Handwriting impairments in Parkinson's disease (PD) have been associated with micrographia, i.e. diminished letter size. However, dyscoordination of the wrist and fingers may also contribute to handwriting deterioration in PD. To investigate this hypothesis, right-handed PD patients and controls were tested in performance of three types of cyclic wrist and finger movements: drawing of two lines and a circle. The line drawing was performed with either simultaneous flexion and extension of the wrist and fingers (equivalent pattern resulting in a right-tilted line) or with wrist flexion/extension

[A medieval herbal from the 14th century, a new version of the Latin Macer?].

A medical compendium of "Melleus liquorphysicae artis" has survived under the name Alexander Hispanus; it is in codex Ms. 8769 of the Biblioteca nacional in Madrid. Therein a herbal from the 14th century is integrated. However, today people must think that we have one herbal and two authors: Alexander Hispanus and Henrik Harpestraeng (died 1244), a physician from Scandinavia. First of all, the parts of the medical compendium are presented. We do not know which parts originally belong to the medical compendium. The examination of many handwritings suggested that the discourses about consumption

Towards a modified consumer haptic device for robotic-assisted fine-motor repetitive motion training.

PURPOSE: To develop, test and evaluate affordable haptic technology to provide robotic-assisted repetitive motion fine-motor training. METHODS: A haptic computer/user interface was modified by adding a pantograph to hold a pen and to increase the haptic workspace. Custom software moves a pen attached to the device through prescribed three-dimensional (3D) stroke sequences to create two-dimensional glyphs. The pen's position is recorded in 3D coordinates at 1 kHz. Twenty-one healthy child volunteers were taught a standard handwriting curriculum in a group setting, two times per week for 45-60

Idea units in notes and summaries for read texts by keyboard and pencil in middle childhood students with specific learning disabilities: Cognitive and brain findings.

Seven children with dyslexia and/or dysgraphia (2 girls, 5 boys, M=11 years) completed fMRI connectivity scans before and after twelve weekly computerized lessons in strategies for reading source material, taking notes, and writing summaries by touch typing or groovy pencils. During brain scanning they completed two reading comprehension tasks-one involving single sentences and one involving multiple sentences. From before to after intervention, fMRI connectivity magnitude changed significantly during sentence level reading comprehension (from right angular gyrus→right Broca's) and during text

Visual experiences during letter production contribute to the development of the neural systems supporting letter perception.

Letter production through handwriting creates visual experiences that may be important for the development of visual letter perception. We sought to better understand the neural responses to different visual percepts created during handwriting at different levels of experience. Three groups of participants, younger children, older children, and adults, ranging in age from 4.5 to 22 years old, were presented with dynamic and static presentations of their own handwritten letters, static presentations of an age-matched control's handwritten letters, and typeface letters during fMRI. First, data f

Eye-hand coordination patterns of progressive and consistent micrographia in Parkinson's disease: neurophysiological correlates.

OBJECTIVE: Micrographia in Parkinson's disease (PD) presents with two phenotypes: progressive (PM), with gradual size reduction, and consistent (CM), with uniformly small letters. We aimed to characterize the features of PM and CM to elucidate the underlying pathophysiology. METHODS: We examined 42 patients with PD and 31 healthy controls using a handwriting task under visual feedback (VF) and no-VF conditions. Finger trajectories were recorded using a touchscreen and motion capture system. Eye movements were assessed during writing and in visually guided (VGS) and memory-guided (MGS) saccade

An intelligent hybrid-fabric wristband system enabled by thermal encapsulation for ergonomic human-machine interaction.

Human-machine interaction has emerged as a revolutionary and transformative technology, bridging the gap between human and machine. Gesture recognition, capitalizing on the inherent dexterity of human hands, plays a crucial role in human-machine interaction. However, existing systems often struggle to meet user expectations in terms of comfort, wearability, and seamless daily integration. Here, we propose a handwriting recognition technology utilizing an intelligent hybrid-fabric wristband system. This system integrates spun-film sensors into textiles to form the smart fabric, enabling intelli

Graphomotor memory in Exner's area enhances word learning in the blind.

Handwriting is thought to impede vocabulary learning in sighted adults because the motor execution of writing interferes with efficient audiovisual processing during encoding. However, the motor memory of writing may facilitate adult word learning when visual sensory inputs are severely restricted. Using functional MRI, we show that late-blind participants, but not sighted participants, learned novel words by recruiting the left dorsal premotor cortex known as Exner's writing area and its functional coupling with the left hippocampus. During later recall, the phonological and semantic contents

Improvement in arm and hand function after a stroke with task-oriented training.

A man aged 77 years sustained a left-hemisphere stroke with right hemiparesis. After spending 10 days in the hospital, he was referred to an area rehabilitation centre. There he carried out daily physical, occupational and speech therapy, with an emphasis on task-oriented treatment. The patient's upper-extremity motor performance was evaluated at admission to the rehabilitation centre and before leaving the hospital by 3 different measurement tools: the upper-extremity motor part of the Fugl-Meyer assessment scale, electromyography in hand-reach and grasp and object manipulation and handwritin

Altered effective connectivity contributes to micrographia in patients with Parkinson's disease and freezing of gait.

Recently, it was shown that patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and freezing of gait (FOG) can also experience freezing episodes during handwriting and present writing problems outside these episodes. So far, the neural networks underlying increased handwriting problems in subjects with FOG are unclear. This study used dynamic causal modeling of fMRI data to investigate neural network dynamics underlying freezing-related handwriting problems and how these networks changed in response to visual cues. Twenty-seven non-freezers and ten freezers performed a pre-writing task with and without vis

An ICF-informed comparison of fine motor assessment measures.

BACKGROUND: Fine-motor difficulties are associated with adverse educational, physical and socioemotional outcomes. Multiple tools are used to assess these difficulties. The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) distinguishes body function, activity and participation as separate domains requiring measurement. We examined whether scores from measures sampling these domains align sufficiently for the tools to be treated as interchangeable. METHODS: Data were collected across four groups: (i)a whole-school sample(n = 415); (ii)a nested subsample with teacher-ide

A deep learning approach to remotely assessing essential tremor with handwritten images.

Essential tremor (ET) is the most prevalent movement disorder, with its incidence increasing with age, significantly impacting motor functions and quality of life. Traditional methods for assessing ET severity are often time-consuming, subjective, and require in-person visits to medical facilities. This study introduces a novel deep learning-based approach for remotely assessing ET severity using handwriting images, which improves both efficiency and accessibility. We collected approximately 1000 high-quality Archimedean spiral handwriting images from patients in both medical institutions and

Transcranial direct current stimulation for the treatment of focal hand dystonia.

The treatment of writer's cramp, a task-specific focal hand dystonia, needs new approaches. A deficiency of inhibition in the motor cortex might cause writer's cramp. Transcranial direct current stimulation modulates cortical excitability and may provide a therapeutic alternative. In this randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled study, we investigated the efficacy of cathodal stimulation of the contralateral motor cortex in 3 sessions in 1 week. Assessment over a 2-week period included clinical scales, subjective ratings, kinematic handwriting analysis, and neurophysiological evaluation. Twel

Smart MXene-hydrogel hybrid platform for self-adaptive writing posture monitoring and autonomous learning closed-loop feedback correction.

Improper pen-holding posture can lead to increased pressure on the finger joints of school-aged children, muscle strain in the wrists and arms, illegible handwriting and slow writing speed. To address this challenge, we developed a PVA-CNF-MXene (PCM) hydrogel sensor via a repeated freeze-thaw method, which exhibits excellent mechanical properties (maximum strain of 450%), high sensitivity (GF = 3.479), fast response (~ 0.2 s), and fatigue resistance (> 4,000 cycles). Based on this material, we constructed an intelligent human-computer interaction system for self-adaptive writing posture monit

Relationships between Translation and Transcription Processes during fMRI Connectivity Scanning and Coded Translation and Transcription in Writing Products after Scanning in Children with and without Transcription Disabilities.

Students with transcription disabilities (dysgraphia/impaired handwriting, n = 13 or dyslexia/impaired word spelling, n = 16) or without transcription disabilities (controls) completed transcription and translation (idea generating, planning, and creating) writing tasks during fMRI connectivity scanning and compositions after scanning, which were coded for transcription and translation variables. Compositions in both groups showed diversity in genre beyond usual narrative-expository distinction; groups differed in coded transcription but not translation variables. For the control group specifi

[Hemianopsia and agnosia].

Hemianopsia and agnosia, the coexistence of a disorder of perception and a disorder of recognition, is exemplified by two patients chosen for their clinical similarity. These two patients each had a stroke, one of the left and the other of the right posterior cerebral artery, resulting right and left hemianopsia respectively. Primary visual functions such as visual acuity and contrast sensitivity were intact. The differences were only apparent as regards the severity of the agnostic disorders. The patient with the lesion on the left failed to recognize stylized drawings, was alexic, could not
