Cardiovascular Risk Factors and Health Behaviors of Women Veterans.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in the United States, and women Veterans (WVs) face elevated risk due to traditional factors (hypertension (HTN), hyperlipidemia (HLD), obesity, diabetes, and smoking) and nontraditional factors (depression and post-traumatic stress disorder [PTSD]). Racial and ethnic disparities further affect their cardiovascular health. This study describes CVD prevalence, risk factors, and health behaviors among WVs to inform interventions. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was sent to 1,909 WVs receiving care at a VA Medical Center

Challenges and Supports for Families of Youth with Behavioral Health Needs.

As mental health needs increase for youth across the United States, little is known about how these youth engage with emergency psychiatric services (EPS) and how accessing of these services is experienced by the family caregivers. This study utilized interviews with 19 youth and their adult caregivers, detailing their experiences with EPS and community needs. Interviews were conducted in-person and over the phone, lasting approximately 45 min. Qualitative data were analyzed following grounded theory to elicit a potential new theoretical view of youth and family experiences and needs associate

Interactions of Oxytocin and Dopamine-Effects on Behavior in Health and Disease.

The hypothalamic neuropeptide and hormone oxytocin are of fundamental importance for maternal, social, and sexual behavior. Deviations in oxytocin levels have also been associated with anxiety, autism spectrum disorders (ASD), depression, ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), and schizophrenia. Both oxytocin and dopamine are often considered reward- and feel-good hormones, and dopamine is associated with the above-mentioned behaviors and, and dopamine is also associated with the above-mentioned behaviors and disorders. Association of Prediabetes Status Awareness With Behaviors and Perception of Health.

INTRODUCTION: Lifestyle modification can significantly reduce the risk of developing diabetes. However, the effect of prediabetes status awareness on perceptions of health and health behaviors are mixed. We used the 2015 to 2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data to evaluate the association of prediabetes status awareness with self-reported perception of health and health behaviors. METHODS: A secondary analysis was performed on the 2015 to 2016 NHANES, which is a biannual, cross-sectional survey designed to be representative of the civilian, noninstitutionalized U

Behavioral and Occupational Health in Military Firefighters: An Understudied Population.

To our knowledge, no studies on health conditions in U.S. military firefighters exist. Data and demographics from the Defense Medical Epidemiology Database were analyzed on several shared medical issues among military personnel and civilian firefighters. Descriptive statistics and Chi-Square goodness of fit tests were conducted to support study aims. Between 2001 and 2015, substantial incidence rate increases (per 10,000) of tinnitus, PTSD, insomnia, and OSA (2005-2015) were observed. Modest to large increases in depressive disorders, adjustment reaction, generalized anxiety disorder, and pani

Concussion and Risk of Chronic Medical and Behavioral Health Comorbidities.

While chronic neurological effects from concussion have been studied widely, little is known about possible links between concussion and long-term medical and behavioral comorbidities. We performed a retrospective cohort study of 9205 adult patients with concussion, matched to non-concussion controls from a hospital-based electronic medical registry. Patients with comorbidities before the index visit were excluded. Behavioral and medical comorbidities were defined by International Classification of Diseases, Ninth and Tenth Revision codes. Groups were followed for up to 10 years to identify co

The association of health behaviors with quality of life in lymphoma survivors.

The impact of change in health behaviors (physical activity [PA], alcohol and smoking) on quality of life (QOL) in lymphoma survivors is not well understood. We evaluated the associations of health behaviors with QOL domains at diagnosis and at 3-year follow-up (FU3) in 2805 lymphoma survivors. We report clinically significant QOL score differences, defined as scores that exceeded a minimally important difference threshold and were statistically significant. Current smoking was associated with lower QOL at baseline (p < 0.01) and at FU3 (p < 0.01). Meeting the American Cancer Society PA guidel

Implementing Measurement-Based Care in Behavioral Health: A Review.

IMPORTANCE: Measurement-based care (MBC) is the systematic evaluation of patient symptoms before or during an encounter to inform behavioral health treatment. Despite MBC's demonstrated ability to enhance usual care by expediting improvements and rapidly detecting patients whose health would otherwise deteriorate, it is underused, with typically less than 20% of behavioral health practitioners integrating it into their practice. This narrative review addresses definitional issues, offers a concrete and evaluable operationalization of MBC fidelity, and summarizes the evidence base and utility o
