Community response to the Ebola outbreak: Contribution of community-based organisations and community leaders in four health districts in Guinea.

The major challenges in controlling the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak in Guinea were contact tracing, referral of suspected cases, secure burial and mistrust in the context of a weak health system. Community involvement and uptake of key interventions were very low, contributing to the spread of the epidemic. A community engagement project, using community based organisations (CBOs) and community leaders, was implemented in four affected health districts in rural Guinea. This paper reports on the contribution of the CBOs and community leaders in controlling the EVD outbreak. Base-, mid- a

Bridging the health literacy gap: Women and community stakeholders' perspectives on maternal and child health communication in peri-urban Karachi, Pakistan.

Health literacy significantly influences health outcomes, particularly in Low-and Middle-Income Countries. Communication of maternal and child heath messages occurs via text messages, phone calls, television, newspaper articles, and home visits. An exploratory qualitative study was conducted in four peri-urban sites of Bin Qasim Town, Karachi to explore the perspectives of women and community stakeholders on effective health messaging strategies in peri-urban Karachi, Pakistan. Seven focus group discussions (FGDs) with women of reproductive age, and seven key informant interviews (KIIs) with t

Building Community and Transforming Knowledge: Histories of Women's Health Practitioners and Community-Based Health Services in 20th-Century Alberta, Canada.

As new government health policy was created and implemented in the late 1910s and the late 1960s, women patients and health practitioners recognized gaps in the new health services and worked together to create better programs. This article brings the histories of the district nursing program (1919-43) and local birth control centres (1970-79) together to recognize women's health provision (as trained nurses or lay practitioners) as community-based and collaborative endeavours in the province of Alberta. The district nursing and birth control centre programs operated under different health pol

Dialogic communication and audience engagement in Hispanic health marketing on X: A computational analysis.

This study investigated the overarching themes and dialogic features of the three national-level Hispanic health organizations (i.e., NHMA, NAHH, NHHF). The focus is on how these health organizations utilize social media for Hispanic health and how the themes and dialogic features are associated with public engagement on social media. To achieve this, the study employed structural topic modeling on 18,430 X posts from 2018 to 2023 and negative binomial regression to predict user amplification engagement (e.g., liking, sharing). The study identified four broad thematic areas: health equity and

Exploring signaling and health beliefs in social media influencer communication on obesity management medications.

Social media discourse surrounding obesity management medications (OMMs) has generated significant public attention, driven largely by celebrities and influencers sharing narratives about their use. However, much of this influencer-generated content remains underexamined, raising concerns about how health beliefs are communicated within sociocultural narratives. This study examines how medical and patient influencers communicate health beliefs about OMMs through signals embedded in their content. Using a qualitative content analysis informed by netnographic principles, 213 YouTube video transc

Telepsychology and digital mental health communication: an exploratory mixed-methods study of tikTok content.

BACKGROUND: Telepsychology consolidated as a mainstream mental health care modality following the COVID-19 pandemic, supported by evidence of clinical efficacy comparable to in-person therapy and a recognized potential to democratize access to care. Against this evolving clinical landscape, social media platforms have simultaneously emerged as major environments for the public circulation of psychological knowledge. OBJECTIVE: To explore the relationship between scientific evidence on telepsychology and its discursive representation in highly viewed Spanish-language TikTok content, and to ide

Utilizing internal analytics and physician-director collaborations to enhance neurological health communication on YouTube.

The dissemination of health information on YouTube presents a paradox where expert-generated content, despite high clinical accuracy, often lacks the engagement seen in non-expert patient narratives. Recent evaluations of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) videos confirm that while physician-produced content achieves superior objective quality scores, it frequently suffers from low visibility and fails to correlate popularity with scientific validity. This manuscript proposes a shift toward utilizing internal analytics, specifically Average View Duration (AVD) and Click-Through Rate (CTR), alongsid

Wildfire and Smoke Risk Communication: A Systematic Literature Review from a Health Equity Focus.

Effective wildfire smoke risk and evacuation communication is urgently needed to avert unnecessary deaths as wildfires increase in frequency and intensity. Human exposure to wildfires has doubled in the last two decades. Low-income, marginalized communities are the most disadvantaged in their ability to respond. A systematic literature review of wildfire and wildfire smoke risk communication research between 2014 and 2024 was conducted. Web of Science and Scopus databases were searched using the keywords "wildfire", "communication", "wildfire smoke", "risk", and "public health", resulting in 2

How Health Care Organizations Are Implementing Disability Accommodations for Effective Communication: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Prior studies have documented that, despite federal mandates, clinicians infrequently provide accommodations that enable equitable health care engagement for patients with communication disabilities. To date, there has been a paucity of empirical research describing the organizational approach to implementing these accommodations. The authors asked US health care organizations how they were delivering these accommodations in the context of clinical care, what communication accommodations they provided, and what disability populations they addressed. METHODS: In this study, 19 qual

A systematic review of the association between parent-child communication and adolescent mental health.

BACKGROUND: This systematic review addresses how adolescent-rated parent-child communication (PCC) quality is related to adolescent mental health. METHODS: We performed a systematic literature search in Medline and APA PsycInfo, including peer-reviewed quantitative studies examining associations between adolescent-rated dyadic PCC quality and general as well as specific measures of adolescent mental health. Qualitative and case studies were excluded, as were studies reporting only parent-rated communication quality or instruments assessing other constructs than dyadic PCC. We screened 5314 ar

Dementia risk communication. A user manual for Brain Health Services-part 3 of 6.

Growing evidence suggests dementia incidence can be reduced through prevention programs targeting risk factors. To accelerate the implementation of such prevention programs, a new generation of brain health services (BHS) is envisioned, involving risk profiling, risk communication, risk reduction, and cognitive enhancement. The purpose of risk communication is to enable individuals at risk to make informed decisions and take action to protect themselves and is thus a crucial step in tailored prevention strategies of the dementia incidence. However, communicating about dementia risk is complex

Brief communication: A re-evaluation of the health index of southern Brazilian shellmound populations.

OBJECTIVES: The southern Brazilian shellmounds provide archaeological evidence of prolonged human activity in the coast from approximately 6000 to 1000 BP. Shellmound building populations exploited the rich coastal estuarine zones, and the human remains recovered from them are important sources of information on health and overall lifestyle of these mid-Holocene groups. Therefore, they were included in the Western Hemisphere Global History of Health project. The shellmounds contribute the highest Health Index in the Western Hemisphere, but these conclusions are based on collections that exclud

Gynecologic cancer screening and communication with health care providers in women with Lynch syndrome.

We evaluated knowledge of gynecologic cancer screening recommendations, screening behaviors, and communication with providers among women with Lynch syndrome (LS). Women aged ≥25 years who were at risk for LS-associated cancers completed a semi-structured interview and a questionnaire. Of 74 participants (mean age 40 years), 61% knew the appropriate age to begin screening, 75-80% correctly identified the recommended screening frequency, and 84% reported no previous screening endometrial biopsy. Women initiated discussions with their providers about their LS cancer risks, but many used nonspeci
