A review on emerging pharmaceutical residues in Ethiopia: occurrence, ecotoxicological aspects, and regulatory concerns.

BACKGROUND: Pharmaceuticals are expected to improve human and animal health, but improper management and regulation have led to adverse effects such as reproductive disorders, antibiotic resistance, and biodiversity loss in ecosystems. Their presence in the environment poses significant risks, including a reduction in biodiversity, reproductive issues, and the development of antimicrobial resistance. This review aims to examine the occurrence and sources of pharmaceuticals in the environment and their ecotoxicological and regulatory aspects, with a focus on Ethiopia. METHODS: A narrative revi

The effect of an improved ICU physical environment on outcomes and post-ICU recovery-a protocol.

BACKGROUND: Intensive care medicine continues to improve, with advances in technology and care provision leading to improved patient survival. However, this has not been matched by similar advances in ICU bedspace design. Environmental factors including excessive noise, suboptimal lighting, and lack of natural lights and views can adversely impact staff wellbeing and short- and long-term patient outcomes. The personal, social, and economic costs associated with this are potentially large. The ICU of the Future project was conceived to address these issues. This is a mixed-method project, aimin

Assessment of Perinatal Care Satisfaction Amongst Mothers Attending Postnatal Care in Ibadan, Nigeria.

INTRODUCTION: Patient satisfaction has been identified as a major index in the assessment of quality of healthcare globally. Mothers judge the quality of perinatal care received based on their satisfaction with the services provided, thus influencing their utilization of the available health facilities. There is currently a dearth of literature on users' satisfaction of services rendered at the primary level of care, which is the first port of call to the health system aimed at serving majority of the populace. OBJECTIVES: The study was set out to investigate maternal satisfaction with perina

The impact on civilians of the bombing of Kosovo and Serbia.

Before the 1999 bombing, Kosovo was among the poorest regions in Europe, with low scores on indices of health care. After the war, housing for much of the population is below even basically acceptable standards and health care is disrupted, with serious risk of epidemic diseases. Societal disintegration has led to high levels of stress. In Serbia, also a poor country, which already suffered from high levels of pollution before the war, large amounts of several highly toxic chemicals were liberated into the environment by the bombing. Targeting of electrical generating plant, water treatment fa

Trialing Over-the-Counter Mild Pain Medication Access in Queensland Prisons: The Experience of Women Prisoners.

In Queensland, Australia, adults in custodial facilities do not have discretionary access to over-the-counter (OTC) medications for mild pain relief and management. This study evaluated a trial allowing prisoners in male and female units at a regional Queensland correctional facility to purchase OTC medications from the prison store. The trial aligned with human rights legislation, international obligations, and the requirement for community equivalence of health care for prisoners. Queensland is the first jurisdiction in Australasia to undertake such a trial. We analyze the results from focus

Transmission Dynamics of Antimicrobial Resistance at a National Referral Hospital in Uganda.

Reliable data on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) transmission dynamics in Uganda remains scarce; hence, we studied this area. Eighty-six index patients and "others" were recruited. Index patients were those who had been admitted to the orthopedic ward of Mulago National Referral Hospital during the study period; "others" included medical and non-medical caretakers of the index patients, and index patients' immediate admitted hospital neighbors. Others were recruited only when index patients became positive for carrying antimicrobial-resistant bacteria (ARB) during their hospital stay. A total o

Readiness to treat and factors associated with survival of newborns with breathing difficulties in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Ethiopia is one of five countries that account for half of the world's 2.6 million newborn deaths. A quarter of neonatal deaths in Ethiopia are caused by birth asphyxia. Understanding different dimensions of the quality of care for newborns with breathing difficulties can lead to improving service provision environments and practice. We describe facility readiness to treat newborns with breathing difficulties, the extent to which newborn resuscitation is provided, and by modeling the survival of newborns with difficulties breathing, we identify key factors that suggest how mortalit

Healthy Dwelling: Design of Biophilic Interior Environments Fostering Self-Care Practices for People Living with Migraines, Chronic Pain, and Depression.

The benefits of biophilic interior design have been recognized by healthcare facilities, but residential environments receive relatively less attention with respect to improving the health of people living with chronic diseases. Recent "stay-at-home" restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic further emphasized the importance of creating interior spaces that directly and indirectly support physical and mental health. In this viewpoint article, we discuss opportunities for combining biophilic interventions with interior design, fostering disease-specific self-care. We provide examples of designi

Extreme Temperatures, Elevated PM2.5, and Acute Care Events Among Dual-Eligible Nursing Facility Residents.

BACKGROUND: Extreme temperatures and elevated fine particulate matter (PM2.5; particles 2.5 μm or less) pose serious health risks for older adults. Nursing facility residents may be especially susceptible because they have complex health needs and limited ability to self-protect, and because nursing facility construction and HVAC capacity can be insufficient to buffer indoor environments from outdoor extremes. Yet, nursing facility regulations address only indoor temperature with no comparable standards for indoor air quality, including PM2.5. We assessed whether outdoor extreme heat, extreme
