Effective influenza vaccines for children: a critical unmet medical need and a public health priority.

Rhodococcus erythropolis KB1 is a member of the Actinomycetota and a petroleum-degrading bacterium, isolated from soil contaminated with petroleum products. The resuscitation-promoting factors (Rpf) widely exist among Actinomycetota, which revive the viable but nonculturable (VBNC) state cells and facilitate growth of normal cells. The Rpf2 of the R. erythropolis KB1 is the most complex Rpf protein, which consists of the conserved Rpf domain, one G5 domain and three DUF348 domains. The protein demonstrates muralytic activity and growth-promoting and resuscitation effect, but the exact roles of

Correctional-staff wellness in a statewide jail system: health appraisals, occupational strain and priorities for organizational support.

PURPOSE: Although substantial research has examined correctional officer health, fewer studies have focused on jail staff, and even fewer have done so within a unified, statewide jail system. This study aims to address this gap by examining staff perceptions of health and wellness across Tennessee's county jails, where centralized oversight enables system level insight. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: Open-ended questionnaire data from 412 correctional personnel were analyzed following survey distribution to staff across all 120 Tennessee county jails. While jails are typically decentralized, Te

Priorities and opportunities for clean energy transitions to advance health in low-income and middle-income countries.

Energy supports health and economic prosperity, yet low-income and socially or politically marginalised populations consume the least energy and depend on the most polluting fuels (ie, biomass). Despite decades of efforts to replace biomass, which is more damaging to health and the climate than cleaner alternatives (ie, gas and electricity), hundreds of millions of people remain without the benefits of clean and modern energy. We outline four priority areas for transitions to clean energy in low-income and middle-income countries: (1) rapidly reduce use of polluting fuels; (2) leverage clean e

Identifying research priorities to improve the health of incarcerated populations: results of citizens' juries in Australian prisons.

Health disparities in incarcerated populations should guide investment in the health care and research of these communities. Although users of health-care services are important in providing input into decisions about research, the voices of people in prison are absent regarding research into their health. In this Health Policy paper, we present priorities for research into the health of people in prison according to people in prison themselves. By use of a deliberative research approach, citizens' juries were conducted in six prisons (three men's and three women's prisons) in Australia. Parti

Crude estimates of cannabis-attributable mortality and morbidity in Canada-implications for public health focused intervention priorities.

BACKGROUND: Cannabis is the most commonly used drug in Canada; while its use is currently controlled by criminal prohibition, debates about potential control reforms are intensifying. There is substantive evidence about cannabis-related risks to health in various key outcome domains; however, little is known about the actual extent of these harms specifically in Canada. METHODS: Based on epidemiological data (e.g. prevalence of relevant cannabis use rates and relevant risk behaviors; risk ratios; and annual numbers of morbidity/mortality cases in relevant domains), and applying the methodolog

The use of nominal group technique in identifying community health priorities in Moshi rural district, northern Tanzania.

This article highlights issues pertaining to identification of community health priorities in a resource poor setting. Community involvement is discussed by drawing experience of involving lay people in identifying priorities in health care through the use of Nominal Group Technique. The identified health problems are compared using four selected village communities of Moshi district in Kilimanjaro region, Tanzania. We conducted this study to trace the experience and knowledge of lay people as a supplement to using 'health experts' in priority setting using malaria as a tracer condition. The p

Infant mortality in a deprived area of Papua New Guinea: priorities for antenatal services and health education.

This cross-sectional study of women was conducted in a deprived area of Papua New Guinea with an estimated infant mortality rate of 133/1000 live births. Mortality patterns derived from birth histories showed that neonatal deaths contribute proportionally more to infant mortality than postneonatal deaths, emphasizing the need for better care at delivery. To examine possible mechanisms for intervention, pregnant women were interviewed to determine patterns of antenatal clinic use, antimalarial drugs and micronutrient supplements given, and how much the women smoked. The results showed that the

Identifying High-Priority Profiles for Edentulism and Other Health Outcomes Through Population-Based Clustering.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to create meaningful clusters of individuals with similar features at the start of the study and to link these clusters to the rate of complete edentulism. These clusters are also linked to death, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and general distress connecting edentulism to overall health. METHODS: Using the 2019-2022 longitudinal Medical Expenditure Panel Survey, the authors identified baseline risk profiles for adults (aged ≥18 years) through weighted k-modes clustering. To further examine the relationship among these groups, a second-stage hierarch

Psychometric properties of MERIT: A concise tool for community health workers to screen priority mental disorders.

BACKGROUND: Task shifting is an accepted way to address the treatment gap for mental health disorders. Community Health Workers (CHWs) can play vital roles through screening, referral, and providing basic counseling. To address the dearth of a concise screening instrument for CHWs, the "Mental HEalth ScReenIng Tool for Community Health Workers in India [MERIT]" was designed and developed. In this paper, we have examined the psychometric properties of MERIT. METHODS: MERIT consists of nine stems (consisting of 11 questions) covering the following five domains: (a) Substance Abuse (alcohol, tob

Shifting patterns and competing explanations for infectious disease priority in global health agenda setting arenas.

The highly decentralized nature of global health governance presents significant challenges to conceptualizing and systematically measuring the agenda status of diseases, injuries, risks and other conditions contributing to the collective disease burden. An arenas model for global health agenda setting was recently proposed to help address these challenges. Further developing the model, this study aims to advance more robust inquiry into how and why priority levels may vary among the array of stakeholder arenas in which global health agenda setting occurs. We analyse order and the magnitude of

Candida auris-a systematic review to inform the world health organization fungal priority pathogens list.

The World Health Organization (WHO) in 2022 developed a fungal priority pathogen list. Candida auris was ultimately ranked as a critical priority pathogen. PubMed and Web of Science were used to find studies published from 1 January 2011 to 18 February 2021, reporting on predefined criteria including: mortality, morbidity (i.e., hospitalization and disability), drug resistance, preventability, yearly incidence, and distribution/emergence. Thirty-seven studies were included in the final analysis. The overall and 30-day mortality rates associated with C. auris candidaemia ranged from 29% to 62%

Candida albicans-A systematic review to inform the World Health Organization Fungal Priority Pathogens List.

Candida albicans is a common fungal pathogen and amongst the leading causes of invasive candidiasis globally. This systematic review examines the characteristics and global impact of invasive infections caused by C. albicans. We searched on PubMed and Web of Science for studies reporting on criteria such as mortality, morbidity, drug resistance, preventability, yearly incidence, and distribution/emergence during the period from 2016 to 2021. Our findings indicate that C. albicans is the most common Candida species causing invasive disease and that standard infection control measures are the pr

Candida parapsilosis: A systematic review to inform the World Health Organization fungal priority pathogens list.

Candida parapsilosis is globally distributed and recognised for causing an increasing proportion of invasive Candida infections. It is associated with high crude mortality in all age groups. It has been particularly associated with nosocomial outbreaks, particularly in association with the use of invasive medical devices such as central venous catheters. Candida parapsilosis is one of the pathogens considered in the WHO priority pathogens list, and this review was conducted to inform the ranking of the pathogen in the list. In this systematic review, we searched PubMed and Web of Science to fi

Creating a priority list of non-communicable diseases to support health research funding decision-making.

OBJECTIVE: To develop and pilot a framework based on multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) to prioritize non-communicable diseases (NCDs) to support health research funding decision-making. METHODS: The framework involves identifying NCDs to be prioritized, specifying prioritization criteria and determining their weights from a survey of stakeholders. The mean weights from the survey are applied to the NCDs' ratings on the criteria to generate a 'total score' for each NCD, by which the NCDs are prioritized. RESULTS: Nineteen NCDs and five criteria were included. The criteria, in decreasing

Animal production food safety: priority pathogens for standard setting by the World Organisation for Animal Health.

In this short study, expert opinion and a literature review were used to identify the pathogens that should be prioritised by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) for the development of future standards for animal production food safety. Prioritisation was based on a pathogen's impact on human health and amenability to control using on-farm measures. As the OIE mandate includes alleviation of global poverty, the study focused on developing countries and those with 'in-transition' economies. The regions considered were Eastern Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa and South America. S

Vulnerability of women in southern Africa to infection with HIV: biological determinants and priority health sector interventions.

OBJECTIVE: To review biomedical determinants of women's vulnerability to infection with HIV and interventions to counter this, within the southern African context. RESULTS: Apart from number of exposures, if any, several factors influence the efficiency of HIV transmission during sex. Acute HIV infection, with extraordinarily high semen viral load, in conjunction with concurrent partnerships maximizes this efficiency. Delaying sexual debut and avoiding HIV exposure among biologically and socially vulnerable youth is critical. Reducing unintended pregnancies keeps girls in school and prevents

From a visible health problem to an actionable research priority: Development and demonstration of the VISIBLE-to-ACTION framework.

PURPOSE: To develop and demonstrate the VISIBLE-to-ACTION framework as a transparent method for moving from a documented health problem to a defensible research priority, while distinguishing research, evidence, decision, and implementation gaps. The framework addresses the limitation of conventional gap statements that rely primarily on claims that few studies exist without establishing why additional evidence is necessary. METHODS: A structured conceptual synthesis was undertaken across four established literatures: health research priority setting, evidence-gap mapping, knowledge translati
