Applying a health action model to predict and improve healthy behaviors in coal miners.

INTRODUCTION: One of the most important ways to prevent work-related diseases in occupations such as mining is to promote healthy behaviors among miners. This study aimed to predict and promote healthy behaviors among coal miners by using a health action model (HAM). METHOD: The study was conducted on 200 coal miners in Iran in two steps. In the first step, a descriptive study was implemented to determine predictive constructs and effectiveness of HAM on behavioral intention. The second step involved a quasi-experimental study to determine the effect of an HAM-based education intervention. Th

Cohort profile: ORICAMs, a French cohort of medical workers exposed to low-dose ionizing radiation.

Medical personnel represent the largest group of workers occupationally exposed to ionizing radiation. Although the health risks associated with occupational exposure to low doses of ionizing radiation in the medical field have been investigated in several national cohorts, no study has been conducted in France to date. The ORICAMs (Occupational Radiation Induced Cancer in Medical staff) cohort is a nationwide French longitudinal cohort of medical workers exposed to ionizing radiation aiming to investigate the risk of radiation-associated cancer and non-cancer mortality. The ORICAMs cohort was

A study of autoantibodies and circulating immune complexes in mercury-exposed chloralkali workers.

UNLABELLED: Inorganic mercury may cause immunologically mediated disease: e.g., glomerulonephritis, acrodynia, and contact allergy. Animal models have demonstrated the importance of genetic factors in determining susceptibility and resistance to autoimmunity, as well as the specific manifestation of the autoimmune response. Findings in groups of workers with occupational exposure to inorganic mercury have been inconsistent. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether an immune response, caused by exposure to inorganic mercury (Hg), could be shown in occupationally exposed workers. METHODS: Immunoglobu

Effect of acute exposure to loud occupational noise during daytime on the nocturnal sleep architecture, heart rate, and cortisol secretion in healthy volunteers.

OBJECTIVES: Noise is one of the commonest physical stressors to which industrial workers are exposed. Many workers complain of symptoms associated with a non-specific generalized stress response, including disturbed sleep. However, industrial workers may be exposed to more than one source of stress and it is not possible to completely attribute the disturbed nocturnal sleep and changes in heart rate to the effects of loud noise alone. This study was done to find out whether acute exposure of healthy individuals to loud occupational noise during the daytime would cause changes in their nocturna

The role of nitric oxide and cytokines in asthma-like syndrome induced by sulfur dioxide exposure in agricultural environment.

BACKGROUND: We previously demonstrated that apricot sulfurization workers are exposed to high concentrations of SO(2), subsequently causing asthma-like syndrome. This study investigated the effects of SO(2) exposure on serum TNF-alpha, IL-1beta, IL-6, IL-8, nitrite and nitrate levels to understand the mechanism of SO(2)-induced bronchoconstriction in asthma-like syndrome. METHODS: We measured the serum levels of the cytokines, direct nitrite, total nitrite and nitrate obtained from 40 volunteer workers after an hour of exposure to SO(2) and 23 healthy controls. RESULTS: The concentrations of

Difference in the prevalence of metabolic syndrome components between male pilots of the Republic of Korea Air Force and the general Korean male population: a cross-sectional comparative study.

INTRODUCTION: Military pilots are selectively healthy, yet face unique aeromedical stressors. Their metabolic risk has rarely been compared with a contemporaneous, age-matched national male cohort. METHODS: This cross-sectional study compared male Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) pilots who underwent routine pilot health examinations (2021-2022) with men from the 2022 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES); metabolic syndrome (MetS) was defined by combined criteria for Asian men. Logistic regression was used to determine crude and adjusted ORs for overall MetS and

Work-related respiratory symptoms and ventilatory disorders among employees of a cement industry in Shiraz, Iran.

Although the main hazard in cement processing is dust and respiratory tract disorders are the most important group of occupational diseases in this industry, evidence for associations between exposure to cement dust and either respiratory symptoms or functional impairment has not been conclusive. This study was, therefore, undertaken to more thoroughly examine the effects of occupational exposure to cement dust on the respiratory system. The study population consisted of a group of 88, randomly selected, male workers with current exposure to cement dust and 80 healthy male office workers witho

Improving nurse care coordination with technology.

Technology offers potential solutions to the pending crisis of healthcare for older adults, while healthcare workers are in short supply. Technology can enable remote monitoring of individuals and early detection of potential problems, so that early interventions can help older adults remain as healthy and independent as possible. Research is under way with passive monitoring technology in senior housing that is finding patterns in the data that can enhance nurse care coordination through early illness detection. With early detection, interventions can be more effective and reduce hospitalizat

Web-based high-intensity interval training with calorie restriction for workplace metabolic-syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is highly prevalent among middle-aged workers. Busy workers often struggle to maintain beneficial lifestyle changes such as cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and caloric restriction (CR), making it difficult to maintain improvements over time. It is critical to develop time-efficient interventions to help these workers incorporate healthy habits into their busy routines. AIMS: This study evaluated the impact of a workplace intervention using a web-based high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and CR program on employees' MetS, CRF, and physical activity (PA

Alterations in Th17 and Treg Lymphocyte Subset in Workers Occupationally Exposed to Lead.

Occupational exposure to lead (Pb) may have a deleterious effect on health of the workers. Among the various physiological systems, the immune system is one of the most susceptible targets of lead. Previous studies have been inconclusive in establishing the effect of Pb on the immune system. With this background, the aim of our study was to determine the effect of occupational Pb exposure on workers' immune parameters. A total of 110 individuals who were occupationally exposed to Pb and 97 apparently healthy non-exposed individuals were recruited in this study. Blood lead levels (BLL) were det

Non-cancer health risks in firefighters: a systematic review.

osFirefighters are occupationally exposed to hazardous factors that may increase their risk of disease. However, non-cancer disease risk in firefighters has not been systematically examined. This systematic review aimed to identify non-cancer disease risk in firefighters and determine whether the risk differs according to job characteristics. We searched the Cochrane Library, Embase, PubMed, and KoreaMed databases using relevant keywords from their inception to April 30, 2021. The Risk of Bias Assessment Tool for Non-randomized Studies version 2.0 was used to assess the quality of evidence. Du

Mortality among Catholic nuns certified as radiologic technologists.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have shown that Catholic nuns have a different mortality experience than women of similar age in the general population. We had a unique opportunity to evaluate mortality patterns of nuns identified in an occupational study of nearly 145,000 radiologic technologists (73% female). METHODS: A total of 1,103 women were classified as nuns based on their titles of "Sister" or "SR". Their mortality experience was compared to other female radiologic technologists and to U.S. white females. RESULTS: Five hundred eighty-three nuns (53%) were deceased as of January 1, 1995.

Alterations in immune and renal biomarkers among workers occupationally exposed to low levels of trichloroethylene below current regulatory standards.

OBJECTIVES: The occupational exposure limit for trichloroethylene (TCE) in different countries varies from 1 to 100 ppm as an 8-hour time-weighted average (TWA). Many countries currently use 10 ppm as the regulatory standard for occupational exposures, but the biological effects in humans at this level of exposure remain unclear. The objective of our study was to evaluate alterations in immune and renal biomarkers among workers occupationally exposed to low levels of TCE below current regulatory standards. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional molecular epidemiology study of 80 healthy work
