Renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitors lower hemoglobin and hematocrit only in renal transplant recipients with initially higher levels.

AIM: We have analyzed the effects of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) inhibitors on evolution of hemoglobin (Hb) and hematocrit (Htc) levels as well as on the evaluation of kidney graft function in stable renal transplant recipients (RTRs) in respect with initially higher or lower Hb and Htc values. METHODS: The study group comprised of 270 RTRs with stable graft function. Besides other prescribed antihypertensive therapy, 169 of them have been taking RAAS inhibitors. RESULTS: We wanted to analyze the effect of the use of RAAS inhibitors on Hb and Htc in patients with initially hi

Hematocrit-lowering effect following inactivation of renin-angiotensin system with angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers.

Several clinical and experimental observations suggest that an intact and activated renin-angiotensin system (RAS) may be an important determinant of erythropoiesis in a variety of clinical conditions, including hypertension, chronic renal insufficiency or failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and congestive heart failure. Accordingly, RAS inactivation may confer susceptibility to the hematocrit-lowering effects of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers. Indeed, a dose-dependent decrease in hematocrit is observed within the first month of such thera

The effect of timing of cord clamping on neonatal venous hematocrit values and clinical outcome at term: a randomized, controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The umbilical cord is usually clamped immediately after birth. There is no sound evidence to support this approach, which might deprive the newborn of some benefits such as an increase in iron storage. OBJECTIVES: We sought to determine the effect of timing of cord clamping on neonatal venous hematocrit and clinical outcome in term newborns and maternal postpartum hemorrhage. METHODS: This was a randomized, controlled trial performed in 2 obstetrical units in Argentina on neonates born at term without complications to mothers with uneventful pregnancies. After written parental co

The relationship between hematocrit and bleeding time in very low birth weight infants during the first week of life.

OBJECTIVES: The bleeding time is a measurement of platelet and capillary interaction following a small standardized cutaneous incision. In adults, anemia causes a prolongation of the bleeding time, and we hypothesized that the same would be true in very low birth weight (VLBW) infants during their first week of life. STUDY DESIGN: Template bleeding times, using the Surgicutt Newborn device, were performed on 20 VLBW weight infants <or=7 days old, before, and again following a clinically ordered erythrocyte transfusion. RESULTS: Neonates who had pretransfusion hematocrits <or=0.28 l/l had lon

Correction of the platelet adhesion defect in delta-storage pool deficiency at elevated hematocrit--possible role of adenosine diphosphate.

Previous studies on patients with storage pool deficiency (SPD) who are specifically deficient in platelet dense granules (delta-SPD) have suggested a role for dense granule substances, in all likelihood adenosine diphosphate (ADP), in mediating thrombus formation on subendothelium at high shear rates. The role of dense granule substances in mediating platelet adhesion appears to be more complicated Previous studies in delta-SPD suggested an adhesion defect that was strongly influenced by the patient's hematocrit (Hct) value. To explore further the possibility that red blood cells (RBCs) may i

Reference Intervals for Hemoglobin and Hematocrit Adjusted for Altitude, Sex, and Age: A Big Data-Based Study in the Colombian Population.

Background: Hemoglobin (Hb) and hematocrit (Hct) reference intervals (RIs) are critical for diagnosing hematological disorders. However, existing reference values often do not account for demographic and environmental variability. Particularly in countries with altitude gradients, such as Colombia, the absence of locally adjusted intervals may lead to the misclassification of anemia and polycythemia. Therefore, this study aims to establish sex-, age-, and altitude-specific reference intervals for Hb and Hct within the Colombian adult population via an indirect, big-data-based methodology. Meth

The Role of Hematocrit Levels in Diagnosing the Severity of Acute Pancreatitis: A Cross-Sectional Study at a Tertiary Care Center in Nepal.

Background and objective Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a frequent cause of hospitalization for gastrointestinal issues, with a significant proportion of cases requiring intensive care. Although various scoring systems are available to predict AP severity, they often involve inconvenience and can be time-consuming and expensive. Hematocrit, a simple, cost-effective, readily available hematological test, has been used to predict AP severity. However, its effectiveness has been inconsistent across different studies. In light of this, we aimed to analyze the role of hematocrit levels in determining A

Association between hematocrit-to-albumin ratio and acute kidney injury in patients with acute pancreatitis: a retrospective cohort study.

Acute pancreatitis (AP) can result in acute kidney injury (AKI), which is linked to poor outcomes. We aimed to assess the relationship between the hematocrit-to-albumin ratio (HAR) and AKI in this population. This retrospective cohort study included consecutive patients diagnosed with AP and admitted to hospital. Data were systematically extracted from electronic medical records, covering baseline demographic and clinical characteristics. Total 1514 AP patients were enrolled, with 17% (257/1514) developing AKI. Multivariable-adjusted regression analysis, curve fitting, threshold effects analys

Difference in hematocrit and plasma albumin levels as an early biomarker of severity and prognosis in patients with severe fever and thrombocytopenia syndrome.

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is a widespread infectious disease with high mortality. Hence, identifying valuable biomarkers for detecting the early changes in SFTS is crucial. In this study, we investigated the relationship between the difference in hematocrit (HCT) and serum albumin (ALB) levels (HCT-ALB) and the prognosis of patients with SFTS virus infection. After excluding the patients who did not meet the SFTS diagnostic criteria, those with SFTS from the First Affiliated Hospital of Wannan Medical College were divided into a fatal and Nonfatal group based on their

Riding out the storm: depleted fat stores and elevated hematocrit in a small bodied endotherm exposed to severe weather.

In the mid-continental grasslands of North America, climate change is increasing the intensity and frequency of extreme weather events. Increasingly severe storms and prolonged periods of elevated temperatures can impose challenges that adversely affect an individual's condition and, ultimately, survival. However, despite mounting evidence that extreme weather events, such as heavy rain storms, can impose short-term physiological challenges, we know little regarding the putative costs of such weather events. To determine the consequences of extreme weather for small endotherms, we tested predi

Anti-IL-6 cytokine treatment has no impact on elevated hematocrit or splenomegaly in a polycythemia vera mouse model.

Somatic mutations in JAK2, MPL and Calreticulin and inflammation play a key role in pathophysiology of chronic myeloproliferative neoplasia (CMN). One of the most prominent cytokines elevated in serum of Polycythemia vera patients is interleukin-6 (IL-6). Currently, it is being discussed whether suppression of inflammation by anti-cytokine approaches as anti-IL-6 treatment may be therapeutically useful in CMN. We here sought to investigate the efficacy of anti-IL-6 treatment on inflammatory cytokines, hematocrit and splenomegaly in CMN like disease. JAK2-V617F knock-in mice (JAK2+/V617F) were

Correlation between sodium, potassium, hemoglobin, hematocrit, and glucose values as measured by a laboratory autoanalyzer and a blood gas analyzer.

INTRODUCTION: Blood gas analyzers can be alternatives to laboratory autoanalyzers for obtaining test results in just a few minutes. We aimed to find out whether the results from blood gas analyzers are reliable when compared to results of core laboratory autoanalyzers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective, single-centered study examined the electronic records of patients admitted to the emergency department of a tertiary care teaching hospital between May 2014 and December 2017. Excluded from the study were patients under 18 years old, those lacking data, those who had any treatment befo

Hematocrit Correction of Whole Blood Phosphatidylethanol Concentrations to Estimate Erythrocyte PEth Concentrations: Sensitivity, Specificity and Influence on Test Utility.

Phosphatidylethanol (PEth) forms in erythrocyte membranes after alcohol consumption, offering a persisting biomarker, that is measurable in whole blood, washed erythrocytes and dried blood spots. For a predominantly erythrocyte-restricted analyte, erythrocyte concentrations seem to have most validity in patients who are anemic through alcoholism or other pathologies, despite preparation increasing assay complexity. Differences in specimen preparation alter PEth concentrations for the same patient, meaning that criteria for interpreting PEth results should relate to specimen type, presenting a

Diffuse Optical Monitoring of Cerebral Hemodynamics and Oxygen Metabolism during and after Cardiopulmonary Bypass: Hematocrit Correction and Neurological Vulnerability.

Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) provides cerebral oxygenation and blood flow (CBF) during neonatal congenital heart surgery, but the impacts of CPB on brain oxygen supply and metabolic demands are generally unknown. To elucidate this physiology, we used diffuse correlation spectroscopy and frequency-domain diffuse optical spectroscopy to continuously measure CBF, oxygen extraction fraction (OEF), and oxygen metabolism (CMRO2) in 27 neonatal swine before, during, and up to 24 h after CPB. Concurrently, we sampled cerebral microdialysis biomarkers of metabolic distress (lactate-pyruvate ratio) and
