Splenomegaly was studied at a municipal teaching hospital in an 11-year retrospective review. The 170 patients were classified into six diagnostic groups. The associated clinical and laboratory features were tested for statistical association (X2), to determine predictive values. Hepatic diseases caused 36% of the splenomegaly; hematologic, 35%; infectious diseases (ID), 16%; inflammatory, 5%; primary splenic, 4%; and other, 3%. Parathyroid hormone (PTH) is a uremic toxin with multiple systemic effects including bone disorders (renal osteodystrophy), myopathy, neurologic abnormalities, anemia, pruritus, and cardiomyopathy. Polycythemia vera (PV) in children and adolescents is very rare. Data on clinical and laboratory evaluations as well as on treatment modalities are sparse. Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a congenital hemolytic anemia with various clinical findings. In some cases hematological neoplasias and some solid tumors may accompany this disease but these have rarely been reported. Here we report five cases with SCD and accompanying hematological neoplasias including lymphoblastic lymphoma, multiple myeloma and hairy cell leukemia in four cases with sickle cell trait and one case of Hodgkin' disease in sickle cell anemia. Anaemia is a global disease, affecting over 1 billion people worldwide; 12% of Australian women experience anaemia in pregnancy. Professional bodies/institutions recommend screening for and treating anaemia in pregnancy but there is inconsistency in recommendations for when to screen. A ten-year retrospective analysis was undertaken of 10 518 pregnancies where there was not a specific indication for repeat blood tests. Using a 28-week haemoglobin (Hb) threshold of ≥110 g/L, seven out of ten could safely forego a routine 36-week full blood count. Less than 2.5% would then be anaemic at 36 weeks

Liver involvement is often observed in several hematological disorders, resulting in abnormal liver function tests, abnormalities in liver imaging studies, or clinical symptoms presenting with hepatic manifestations. In hemolytic anemia, jaundice and hepatosplenomegaly are often seen mimicking liver diseases. In hematologic malignancies, malignant cells often infiltrate the liver and may demonstrate abnormal liver function test results accompanied by hepatosplenomegaly or formation of multiple nodules in the liver and/or spleen. These cases may further evolve into fulminant hepatic failure.

The value of biochemical tests in treating patients with uncontrolled seizures is unclear. We present the case of an 8-year-old boy with uncontrolled seizures receiving two antiepileptic drugs. He had been diagnosed with recurrent herpes encephalitis and treated with acyclovir 1 year previously. Laboratory blood analyses, performed because of his uncontrolled seizure episodes, revealed hypocalcemia.
