BACKGROUND: One in 3 people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1; PWH) are hepatitis B (HBV) core antibody positive (anti-HBc+) and surface antigen negative (HBsAg-) suggesting prior exposure. HBV reactivation can occur in this group if nucleos(t)ide reverse transcriptase inhibitor antiretrovirals (ARV) active against both HIV and HBV are stopped. We describe HBV reactivation in anti-HBc+/HBsAg- PWH following switch from ARV with HBV activity to ARV without HBV activity.
METHODS: We identified an at-risk cohort of 5986 anti-HBc+ participants switched from HBV-active to non-HBV-active ARV

INTRODUCTION: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) reactivation has been reported in B-cell lymphoma patients with resolved hepatitis B (hepatitis B surface antigen [HBsAg]-negative and hepatitis B core antibody [HBcAb]-positive). This study aimed to assess HBV reactivation and hepatitis occurrence in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) patients with resolved hepatitis B receiving rituximab-containing chemotherapy compared with HBsAg-negative/HBcAb-negative patients to identify risk factors for HBV reactivation and hepatitis occurrence and to analyze whether HBV reactivation and hepatitis affect the surv

Paired sera and liver biopsies from 105 patients with chronic hepatitis B virus infection (34 HBeAg positive and 71 anti-HBe positive) were studied to investigate the relation between the degree of histological activity and alanine aminotransferase (ALT), hepatitis B virus DNA (HBV-DNA) or IgM antibody to hepatitis B core antigen (IgM anti-HBc) levels. ALT levels were significantly higher in patients with piecemeal necrosis (155 +/- 124 vs 75 +/- 42, p = 0.0017), but there were no differences in the ALT values of patients with or without intralobular necrosis. ALT values were within normal ran

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) may reactivate when treating chronic hepatitis C (CHC) with direct acting antivirals (DAA). We aim to investigate the risk of HBV reactivation during DAA therapy.
METHODS: Chronic hepatitis C patients receiving pan-oral DAA therapy from December 2013 to August 2016 were evaluated. Fifty-seven patients that had a past HBV infection (negative hepatitis B surface antigen [HBsAg] and positive hepatitis B core antibody) and seven patients that had a current HBV infection (positive HBsAg) were enrolled. Serum HBV and hepatitis C virus (HCV) markers were r

We report the case of a hepatitis B virus chronic carrier in whom features of severe autoimmune hepatitis developed concurrently with the emergence of a hepatitis Be antigen-negative variant. Corticosteroid administration failed to normalize serum transaminase activity and resulted in increased viral multiplication. Adenine arabinoside monophosphate treatment allowed simultaneous inhibition of hepatitis B virus multiplication and remission of autoimmune features. This observation indicates that hepatitis Be antigen-negative variants can induce autoimmune hepatitis and adds support to the hypot

B cells play a key role in humoral immunity and participate in the clearance of hepatitis B virus (HBV) through antibody production, antigen presentation, and immune regulation. Variations in immunological responses to different HBV antigens show antigenic heterogeneity in B cells during HBV infection. In recent years, it has been found that hepatitis B surface antibody-specific B cells are abnormally differentiated, while hepatitis B core antibody-specific B cells are relatively intact in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB). Additionally, defects in the non-antibody-generating functions o

BACKGROUND: Occult hepatitis B infection (OBI) is characterized by negative hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and detectable hepatitis B virus (HBV)-DNA in the liver and/or serum, with or without hepatitis B core antibody (anti-HBc). Anti-HBc is the most sensitive marker of previous HBV. HBV reactivation in patients under immunosuppressive treatment is life-threatening, occurring in both overt and occult HBV especially in hematological malignancies.
AIM OF THE WORK: To evaluate the prevalence and chemotherapy-induced reactivation of OBI among hepatitis B surface antigen negative patients wi

It is unclear whether hepatitis B surface antibody (HBsAb) confers clinical benefits after HBsAg seroclearance, especially in hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) seroreversion and maintenance of HBsAb. We evaluated this in patients (n = 222) with HBsAg loss following treatment with pegylated interferon (PEG-IFN)-based therapy who completed a 48-week follow-up period. Serum hepatitis B virus (HBV) markers and biochemical indicators were evaluated every 3 months. The primary endpoint was HBsAg seroreversion. Factors associated with HBsAg seroreversion were also investigated. HBsAb ≥100 mIU/ml re

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) covalently-closed-circular (ccc)DNA is the key molecule responsible for viral persistence within infected hepatocytes. The evaluation of HBV cccDNA is crucial for the management of patients with chronic HBV infection and for the personalization of treatment. However, the need for liver biopsy is the principal obstacle for the assessment of intrahepatic HBV cccDNA. In the last decade, several studies have investigated the performance of hepatitis B core-related antigen (HBcrAg) as a surrogate of HBV cccDNA amount in the liver. In this meta-analysis, we collected 14 studi

This study investigated the ability of hepatitis B core-related antigen (HBcrAg) to predict hepatitis B virus (HBV) relapse in HBeAg-negative patients after cessation of entecavir therapy. A total of 301 HBeAg-negative patients without cirrhosis who had stopped entecavir therapy for at least 12 months were recruited. All patients fulfilled the stopping criteria proposed by the APASL 2012 guidelines. The five-year cumulative rates of virological relapse, clinical relapse and HBsAg loss were 71.6%, 57.3% and 18.7%, respectively. Serum HBsAg at end of treatment (EOT) was an independent predictor

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) has been classified into eight genotypes and can be further divided into several subgenotypes that have different geographic distributions. Because of increased human migration, the prevalence of rare subgenotypes is increasing in Japanese patients with acute hepatitis B. Lamivudine-resistant strains of HBV have begun to emerge in association with chronic hepatitis B. The aim of this study was to investigate the distribution of HBV subgenotypes and lamivudine-resistant strains in patients in Japan with acute hepatitis B. The risk of hepatitis B among men having sex with men (MSM) is high, with core antibody rates ranging from 5% to 81%. We describe an outreach, hepatitis B vaccination programme aiming to raise awareness of hepatitis B and increase vaccination uptake. The 13-week programme used an ultra rapid vaccination schedule. Follow-up was defined as complete if the client was core antibody positive, had adequate surface antibody levels following prior vaccination or received three vaccine doses. One hundred and fifty clients were screened for hepatitis B and syphilis. Three cases of untreated syphilis (ea

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV), discovered as causative viruses of post-transfusion hepatitis, become persistent infections, leading to chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). For HCV, recent IFN-free direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapies have increased sustained virological response (SVR) rates and reduced adverse events. IFN-based therapies, still the standard of care in Asian countries, are influenced by IL28B genetic variants and the liver fibrosis stage, but the DAA combinations obscure the influence of these factors. These new therapies ca

Approximately 500 million people are chronically infected with the hepatitis B virus (HBV) or hepatitis C virus (HCV) worldwide and are thus at high risk of progressive liver disease, leading to liver fibrosis, cirrhosis and ultimately hepatocellular cancer. Virus-specific CD8+ T-cells play a major role in viral clearance in >90% of adult patients who clear HBV and in approximately 30% of patients who clear HCV in acute infection. However, several mechanisms contribute to the failure of the adaptive CD8+ T-cell response in those patients who progress to chronic infection. These include viral m

Several studies have reported a higher prevalence of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in patients with B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and suggested a pathogenic role for HCV, but studies on hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma are limited. To determine the association between HBV infection and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, we performed a case-control study in Korea, a hepatitis B endemic area. We recruited 222 patients newly diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma at Seoul National University Hospital between January 1997 and December 1998 as cases. Four age- and sex-ma

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Hepatitis B core antigen (HBcAg) and surface antigen (HBsAg) can be detected through immunostaining of liver tissue. This study examined the extent and patterns of HBcAg and HBsAg staining before and after long-term nucleos(t)ide analogue (NA) therapy.
METHODS: Liver biopsies performed before and after 4 years of NA treatment were analyzed from patients with HBeAg-positive and HBeAg-negative chronic hepatitis B participating in 3 treatment trials. Immunostaining for HBcAg and HBsAg was evaluated using semiquantitative scales for both extent and distribution. HBV DNA, HBV RN
