Hypogammaglobulinemia develops in 3 to 6% of patients with thymoma and this association is commonly referred to as thymoma with immunodeficiency (formerly Good syndrome). Recurrent infections with encapsulated bacteria and opportunistic infections associated with disorders of both humoral and cell mediated immunity frequently occur in this rare primary, adult-onset immunodeficiency. We report a case of thymoma with immunodeficiency complicated by disseminated herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection and review five additional cases of HSV-related infections reported since 1966 in patients presenti

Although exceedingly rare, fulminant hepatic failure in immunocompetent patients can develop with primary or recurrent infection due to herpes simplex virus. The diagnosis is frequently obscured by the absence of mucocutaneous involvement. Elevated transaminases with leucopenia and a relatively low bilirubin level may provide clues to the diagnosis. Here a female patient, 43 years, presented with the complaints of increasing jaundice, anorexia, nausea, vomiting for one week duration. She had hepatomegaly. Investigations revealed markedly raised transaminases and coagulopathy. Herpes simplex vi

METHOD: We reviewed retrospectively the demographic, clinical, biological characteristics and outcomes of 11 patients with HSV meningitis.
RESULTS: Among the 11 patients, six were infected with HIV, four had a documented history of genital herpes, and one recurrent meningitis. In all cases, the onset of symptoms was abrupt, with severe headache and fever. On admission, 9/11 patients had severe meningismus; two patients had HSV anogenital ulcerations. CSF analysis showed in every case a significant increased of leukocytes with a lymphocytic pleocytosis, a mild elevated protein level and a norm

PURPOSE: To report a case of recurrent herpes simplex virus (HSV) epithelial keratitis after intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide injection for the treatment of diabetic macular edema.
METHODS: Case report.
RESULTS: We describe a case of a 59-year-old woman with a history of ocular HSV disease and severe proliferative diabetic retinopathy. She received an intravitreal injection of triamcinolone acetonide for macular edema in the right eye. One week later, she developed foreign body sensation, redness, and photophobia in the same eye. Slit-lamp examination revealed a corneal epithelial dendri

OBJECTIVE: Neonatal herpes simplex virus infections cause significant neonatal mortality and morbidity, but the course and prognosis in preterm infants is not well documented. We performed a retrospective review of herpes simplex virus infections at out institution within the first 30 days after birth in infants who were born at <37 weeks to help better define the symptoms and signs of herpes simplex virus infections in preterm infants and to assist in prognosis.
METHODS: Hospital databases were reviewed to identify culture- or polymerase chain reaction-proven cases of herpes simplex virus-1

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) Type-1 and -2 are common infections that can cause primary and recurrent herpes labialis and genitalis, as well as gingivostomatitis, keratoconjunctivitis, encephalitis, disseminated infections in immunocompromised persons and neonatal infections. Despite several decades of HSV vaccine development, no effective vaccine has been developed until recently. The following review of the genital HSV-2 glycoprotein D (gD2t, t is for truncated) subunit vaccine formulated with a new adjuvant (AS04) containing alum and 3-O deacylated monophosphoryl lipid A (MPL) provides a back

We describe a patient with serologically proven Murray Valley encephalitis (MVE), whose presentation was clinically and radiologically characteristic of Herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE). The reports of MRI abnormalities in MVE, and the closely related Japanese Encephalitis and West Nile virusii are mostly of bilateral thalamic or grey matter involvement. The MRI scan findings in this case instead showed the typical temporal lobe changes of HSE. Our case report highlights that MVE can mimic HSE, both clinically and radiologically. Therefore it is important to collect an accurate and detailed t

As many as 2,500 infants develop neonatal herpes each year, most of whom are born to women with no history or physical findings suggestive of genital herpes. Infection usually takes one of three forms: 1) disease localized to skin, eyes, and mucous membranes, 2) localized central nervous system infection, or 3) disseminated infection. Exposure to the virus occurs during passage through an infected birth canal, but 5% of infants acquire the infection in utero. The mortality rate is 31% for disseminated infection and 6% for localized central nervous system disease; long-term neurologic sequelae

PURPOSE: To report association of herpes simplex virus-type 1 (HSV-1) in four cases of congenital cataract.
DESIGN: Prospective interventional case series.
METHODS: Four infants younger than 12 months, presenting with unilateral or bilateral congenital cataract, were included. The cases were clinically evaluated by the pediatric ophthalmologist. The lens aspirates collected at the time of cataract surgery were processed for HSV-1 culture in rabbit corneal epithelial (SIRC) cell line and for HSV-1 DNA by polymerase chain (PCR). The sera of the children and the mother were tested for HSV-1 imm

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) and varicella-zoster virus (VZV) are both human alpha-herpes viruses. They are capable of establishing latent infections in neural tissues and to reactive from these sites, determining the clinical features of the disease (primary infection versus recurrences). Infections with these viruses are common; an increased number of elderly and immunocompromised individuals will likely lead to an even higher prevalence. HSV infection--in its typical form characterized by grouped vesicles--is frequently inapparent or atypical in both primary and recurrent disease. The clinica

Herpes simplex viruses (HSV) are ubiquitous pathogens which can be transmitted vertically causing significant morbidity and mortality in neonates. Neonatal HSV infection is infrequent with an incidence ranging from 1 in 3,500 to 1 in 20,000, depending on the population. Neonatal HSV infection is much more frequent in infants born to mothers experiencing a primary HSV infection with an incidence approaching 50%, while infants born to mothers experiencing recurrent HSV infection have an incidence of less than 3%. Neonatal infections are clinically categorised according to the extent of the disea

BACKGROUND: Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is rarely the causative agent of endometritis and is usually found in association with pelvic inflammatory disease. Only one case of postpartum HSV endometritis has been reported.
CASES: We describe two cases of herpes simplex postpartum endometritis. Neither patient had genital HSV lesions noted at the time of delivery. The first case developed after a preterm cesarean delivery in an 18-year-old primipara. She had persistent puerperal fever despite broad-spectrum anti-microbial treatment. The second case was a 16-year-old primipara whose vaginal deliver

Viruses are the major infectious agents causing conjunctivitis and keratoconjunctivitis. Two antigenic types, herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2), can be recognized in which numerous genomic variants or genotypes have been described. HSV-1 infection is one of the major causes of blindness. Different strains can induce different types of ocular lesions. Twelve patients with acute herpetic epithelial keratitis were studied by monoclonal antibodies and restriction enzymes, and nine different HSV-1 genomic variants were identified. This study confirms that a variety of HSV-1 str

BACKGROUND: Intrauterine infection with herpes simplex virus (HSV) has been associated with a significant number of neonatal HSV infections. When these infections begin in utero, the associated morbidity is more severe, and treatment regimens may be less effective.
CASE: A 24-year-old nullipara with an abnormal triple screen and multiple ultrasound abnormalities at 19 weeks' gestation underwent amniocentesis and cordocentesis. Laboratory results were consistent with HSV infection. The patient elected to terminate the pregnancy, and on postmortem examination of the fetus, evidence of dissemina

This is a case report of a brief episode of rather typical hypomanic symptoms in the acute phase of presumed herpes simplex encephalitis in a young woman. I infer that the hypomanic episode was triggered from the anterior inferomedial temporal lobe or limbic system, the presumed cerebral substrate of the emotions in general, and review the literature relating to the occurrence of hypomania associated with structural disease of the nervous system.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical and pathologic features of acute herpetic tonsillitis and to compare the histologic findings with those of herpetic lymphadenitis.
DESIGN: We present a case report of a 22-year-old woman with bilateral cervical adenopathy, acute tonsillitis, and suspected peritonsillar abscess.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Histologic examination of the excised tonsils demonstrated discrete necrotic areas that contained cells with intranuclear viral inclusions.
RESULTS: The diagnosis of herpetic tonsillitis was confirmed by demonstrating herpes simplex virus (HSV)-infected cells
