Injury to the external iliac artery during hip arthroplasty for old central dislocation.

Injury to a major vessel is an uncommon but well recognized and serious complication of total hip arthroplasty. An increased risk of such injury has been reported in rheumatoid patients, in revision surgery, and with the injudicious use of particular instruments, especially the sharp Hohmann retractor. The authors report the case of a patient who sustained a laceration to his external iliac artery during the course of a hip arthroplasty for osteoarthritis secondary to old central dislocation. The cause of the injury is discussed and the relevant literature reviewed.

[Peripheral nerve injury due to total replacement of the hip-joint (author's transl)].

Report on peripheral nerve lesions due to total replacement of the hip-joint based on the literature and the authors' own experience. In 15 patients our diagnosis was made on clinical and electromyographic evidence. 16 endoprostheses had been inserted. The femoral nerve was involved on 12 occasions, the sciatic in 5, the glutei in 5, the obturator in 2, the lateral cutaneous femoris in 2 and the posterior cutaneous in 1 instances. One has to count on about 1% of such lesions. This type of paresis has to be distingushed from pseudopareses for which electromyography was proved very effective. Da

Associated factors of nerve injury post-total hip arthroplasty: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Nerve injury is a rare complication following total hip arthroplasty (THA), but its management is highly difficult once it occurs. To reduce its incidence, deeply investigating its associated factors is of key significance. Therefore, the associated factors of nerve injury post-THA were analyzed and summarized in this meta-analysis by study screening and data processing. METHODS: We searched Embase, PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science up to April 28, 2025 for studies on the associated factors of nerve injury post-THA. We performed quality assessment using the Newcastle-Ot

Triple Blow Injury to a Limb: Ipsilateral Hip and Knee Dislocation with Vascular Occlusion.

Ipsilateral hip and knee dislocation (double blow) occurring simultaneously during trauma are rare occurrences that are associated with secondary complications. These are high energy injuries that warrant acute emergency management more so if associated with vascular compromise. We encountered a poly trauma patient having a combined right anterior hip and ipsilateral knee dislocation with vascular occlusion at popliteus level apart from associated segmental radius fracture of the left upper limb. This young patient presented after 22 h being referred form elsewhere making the situation critica

Tenotomy of the Gluteus Maximus in Total Hip Arthroplasty with Prevention of Sciatic Nerve Injury.

The authors report a single case of complex primary hip total arthroplasty in a 34-year-old female patient with a 5.5 cm lower limb dysmetria, in whom a maximum gluteus tenotomy was performed in order to prevent sciatic nerve injury. The surgery was performed under electroneurophysiological monitoring of the fibular and tibial branches of the sciatic nerve, collecting pretenotomy, posttenotomy, and postarthroplasty reduction data. The findings demonstrate that the maximum gluteus tenotomy improved the motor response of the fibular component of the sciatic nerve.

Role of total hip replacement arthroplasty between transplantation and acute kidney injury.

Osteonecrosis of the femoral head is a severely disabling complication of steroid immunosuppression in renal transplant patients. The increased number of patients undergoing transplantation has increased the number of transplant recipients undergoing total hip replacement arthroplasty (THRA). In this study, we retrospectively assessed patients who underwent THRA from May 2004 to February 2014, and evaluated their demographic and clinical characteristics, the results of peri-operative laboratory tests, the amounts of fluids transfused during surgery, and anesthesia time. Our results found that

Hip proprioceptors preferentially modulate reflexes of the leg in human spinal cord injury.

Stretch-sensitive afferent feedback from hip muscles has been shown to trigger long-lasting, multijoint reflex responses in people with chronic spinal cord injury (SCI). These reflexes could have important implications for control of leg movements during functional activities, such as walking. Because the control of leg movement relies on reflex regulation at all joints of the limb, we sought to determine whether stretch of hip muscles modulates reflex activity at the knee and ankle and, conversely, whether knee and ankle stretch afferents affect hip-triggered reflexes. A custom-built servomot

Physiotherapists' Experiences with the Hip Disability and Knee Injury Osteoarthritis Outcome Score Following Total Hip and Knee Arthroplasty: A Qualitative Interview Study.

Background: Clinical guidelines for physiotherapy following total hip and knee arthroplasty (THA/TKA) recommend using Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) like the Hip disability and Knee injury Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (HOOS/KOOS). However, it remains unclear how physiotherapists use these PROMs in daily clinical practice. Objective: To explore primary care physiotherapists' experiences with the HOOS/KOOS in daily clinical practice following THA and TKA. Methods: Thirteen physiotherapists in the Netherlands were recruited via convenience sampling. Data were collected through semi-str

Traumatic hip fracture-dislocation: A middle-term follow up study and a proposal of new classification system of hip joint associated injury.

Traumatic hip fracture dislocation is a rare injury associated with high-energy trauma. Most of these injuries should be surgically treated. Hip dislocation is an orthopaedic emergency and reduction must be performed within 6-8 hours of trauma. We performed a retrospective analysis of 69 patients with "hip joint associated injuries", treated between January 2002 and December 2016. 33 patients were assessed at a mean follow-up of 36.9 months (range 18-132) after surgery. We propose a new classification system in which, different patterns of fracture (head and/or neck and/or acetabular) are desc

Hip joint range of motion reduction in sports-related chronic groin injury diagnosed as pubic bone stress injury.

Traumatic osteitis pubis is a non-specific entity that relates to chronic groin injury and has recently been described as being akin to a pubic bone stress injury. It is uncertain whether or not reduction of hip joint range of motion occurs in traumatic osteitis pubis. The purpose of this study was to establish whether there is a reduction of hip range of motion in athletes who have chronic groin injury diagnosed as pubic bone stress injury. A case-control study was performed whereby 89 Australian Rules footballers underwent, with clinical history unknown, clinical and MRI examination of the g

Traumatic Hip Joint and Thigh Injuries - an Analysis of NHF Reporting Data from 2016-2019 Using the NHF Statistics API.

BACKGROUND: The hip joint is one of the most important joints in the human body. Although its multiaxial movements account for many benefits, they also render the hip one of the most hard-working joints. Injuries to the hip joint and thigh often occur as a result of a fall. According to epidemiologic data, such falls are most frequent in the elderly, particularly in osteoporosis sufferers. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The "Services" component of the Statistics API version 1.0 provided by the National Health Fund (NHF) was used in order to evaluate the number of hospitalizations due to hip joint and
