Psychological treatment for hoarding problems has historically been associated with poor outcomes. When treated as a subgroup of obsessive-compulsive disorder, individuals with hoarding beliefs were less likely to respond to treatment than individuals exhibiting other obsessive-compulsive beliefs and behaviours. When treated as its own disorder using cognitive behavioural therapy, individuals report approximately 25% improvement in symptoms on average. However, less than a third of people experience clinically meaningful change. Further, changes in functioning and quality of life are not routi

Hoarding disorder (HD) is a new psychiatric diagnosis in Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-Fifth edition and preliminary evidence suggests that cognitive-behavioral treatments are effective in treating this condition. However, it has been demonstrated that individuals with HD generally display poor compliance during treatment, which may lead to poor outcomes. Treatment compliance can be conceptualized as either within-session or between-session compliance, but currently there are no validated measures of within-session or between-session compliance specifically for HD. Animal hoarding is directly associated with impaired human and animal health. In this study, we describe the tragic end of a household fire involving an individual who was hoarding animals. In 2013, the city fire department and the Animal Protection Department of Curitiba were called to respond to a house fire at the residence of an elderly woman with around 70-80 dogs. She had a long-standing diagnosis of animal hoarding behavior and was involved in multiple ongoing judicial processes for animal neglect and cruelty. According to witnesses, the most likely cause of the fire was the lighting of

This study examined the impact of childhood environmental unpredictability on hoarding behavior, focusing on the mediating roles of attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance and the moderating role of environmental cues. Three studies were conducted: Study 1 investigated the effect of childhood environmental unpredictability on hoarding behavior through big data analysis and an experiment; Study 2 tested the mediating effects of attachment anxiety and avoidance, as well as the moderating role of environmental cues, using a two-stage questionnaire; and Study 3 further explored differences in

Food-hoarding birds hide many different food types, and are able to remember which kind of food they have hidden and where it was located. Usually, these different food types, although potentially of different value to the birds, are all palatable and would be consumed when encountered. We report on the responses of coal tits (Periparus ater) to peanut pieces that were made distasteful with quinine. While birds preferred eating normal peanut pieces over quinine-soaked ones, they were still very likely to hoard the distasteful nuts. Birds also did not distinguish between the two nut types when

One of the core features of hoarding is a significant resistance to discarding objects, which is fueled by dysfunctional beliefs and unwarranted negative emotions that hoarders tend to feel when disposing of their possessions. To our knowledge, longitudinal studies investigating the psychological effects that people who hoard experience after separating from their valuable possessions have yet to be conducted. Our study's principal aim was to explore psychological processes that individuals with high hoarding features (n = 53; 49.1%) and individuals with low hoarding features (n = 55; 50.9%) e

Hoarding disorder often results in debilitating functional impairment and may also compromise health-related quality of life (QoL). This study investigated the association between hoarding behavior and QoL relative to six highly impairing medical and psychiatric disorders in a sample of 20,722 participants enrolled in the internet-based Brain Health Registry. Nearly 1 in 8 participants (12.2%) endorsed clinically relevant hoarding symptoms (CHS). In separate multivariable linear regression models, hoarding was more strongly associated with mental QoL than diabetes (Standardizedβ = -0.21, 95% C

Hoarding disorder has significant health consequences, including the devastating threat of eviction. In this pilot study, critical time intervention (CTI), an evidence-based model of case management shown to be effective for vulnerable populations, was adapted for individuals with severe symptoms of hoarding disorder at risk for eviction (CTI-HD). Of the 14 adults who enrolled, 11 participants completed the 9-month intervention. Completers reported a modest decrease in hoarding severity, suggesting that, while helpful, CTI-HD alone is unlikely to eliminate the risk of eviction for individuals

Excessive or maladaptive object attachment is the defining feature of Hoarding Disorder (HD) and the acquisition process within Compulsive Buying-Shopping Disorder (CBSD). In recent years, the relationship of object attachment within HD and CBSD to individual's self-concept has become the focus of direct research. On the basis of this literature, it seems that an underdeveloped, ambivalent, or discrepant self-concept could be a vulnerability for dysfunctional object attachment behavior. Further, the importance of objects in buttressing and extending self-concept, both individually and in relat

Hoarding disorder (HD) places an important burden on people with HD, on their family members and society. In this paper we evaluate help-seeking in HD at primary mental health, measured in referral rate, together with its individual, environmental and structural correlates. We conducted an aggregate study by combining existing official data with our own survey data at the catchment area level. We found a mean annual referral rate of 1.58 (SD = 1.79) cases of HD in primary mental health facilities per 10,000 of adult population. The referrals rate correlated with socio-demographic characteristi

Humans have developed exceptional capacities for tool use, such that everyday interactions with the physical world largely involve manufactured objects (i.e., artifacts). Although research on apraxia has elucidated the cognitive mechanisms underlying tool use, human-object relations extend beyond their functional use to include socio-emotional dimensions that remain comparatively understudied. This critical review addresses two syndromes traditionally studied in separate fields that, when considered together, provide insights into the nature of human-object relations. Apraxia is marked by impa

BACKGROUND: Preliminary evidence suggests that mental imagery may be an important clinical feature in hoarding. Individuals who hoard use objects as receptacles for memories, and experience more frequent, intrusive and distressing images compared with the general community. However, the specific nature of these associations remains poorly understood.
AIMS: We aimed to investigate whether hoarding traits were related to the ability to voluntarily generate imagery in different sensory modalities, and uniquely with the tendency to experience negative intrusive imagery. We also aimed to understan

BACKGROUND: Hoarding disorder (HD) is increasingly recognized as a distinct, multifactorial condition. Recent findings in neuroimaging, psychopathology, compulsive acquisition, suicidality, stigma, and social context call for a redefinition of HD beyond its traditional association with obsessive-compulsive disorder.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This narrative review synthesizes recent clinical, neurobiological, and sociocultural literature, including latent class analysis and resting-state fMRI studies, exploring cognitive dysfunction, comorbidities, suicidality, stigma, and environmental context.

Hoarding disorder is common and debilitating, especially in older adults, and novel treatment approaches are needed. Many current treatments emphasize skills related to discarding and decision-making about possessions, which can be practiced in the patient's home. However in many cases, in-home visits are unfeasible, or real-life discarding is too difficult. Virtual reality (VR) offers the ability to create a virtual "home" including 3D scans of the patient's actual possessions that can be moved or discarded. VR discarding is an alternative to in-home visits and an approach that provides a ste

Hoarding behaviors are positively associated with medical morbidity, however, current prevalence estimates and types of medical conditions associated with hoarding vary. This analysis aims to quantify the medical morbidity of hoarding disorder (HD). Cross-sectional data were collected online using the Brain Health Registry (BHR). Among 20,745 participants who completed the Hoarding and Clutter and Medical History thematic modules, 1348 had HD (6.5%), 1268 had subclinical HD (6.1%), and 18,829 did not meet hoarding criteria (87.4%). Individuals with HD were more likely to report a lifetime hist

BACKGROUND: Preliminary evidence suggests that hoarding disorder (HD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) may show distinct patterns of brain activation during executive performance, although results have been inconclusive regarding the specific neural correlates of their differential executive dysfunction. In the current study, we aim to evaluate differences in brain activation between patients with HD, OCD and healthy controls (HCs) during response inhibition, response switching and error processing.
METHODS: We assessed 17 patients with HD, 18 patients with OCD and 19 HCs. Executive pr

This paper sought to assess whether cognitive analytic therapy (CAT) was effective with a male patient meeting diagnostic criteria for hoarding disorder (HD) who had been nonresponsive to two previous courses of cognitive behaviour therapy. An adjudicated hermeneutic single-case efficacy design (HSCED) evaluation was undertaken. A rich case record (i.e., a summary document containing the case details, formulations, and detailed qualitative and quantitative outcomes) was created. The rich case record was then debated by affirmative (N = 3) and sceptic (N = 3) research teams. Expert judges (N =

OBJECTIVES: Unmet interpersonal needs may play a role in excessive emotional attachments to objects for people with hoarding disorder (HD). Previous research indicates that social support (but not attachment difficulties) may be specific to HD. The study aimed to evaluate social networks and support in HD relative to clinical controls with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and healthy controls (HC). The secondary aim was to explore the extent of loneliness and thwarted belongingness. Potential mechanisms for deficits in social support were also considered.
DESIGN: A cross-sectional between-
